Gilligans Gold

I used to be really good at Gilligans Gold

but found it quite hard when playing it again to review! Still enjoyed it though - with a few minor improvements it could have been a real classic.

Solid enough fun game that is really sort of 'retro' - more than a lot of other Speccy games anyway.

So - does anyone else like this game?

I got it on a second-hand copy of Soft Aid, but never really got the hang of it. I think the character sprites were a bit blobby, but I loved the use of colour in it - one of the more interesting uses of PAPER attributes.

Yeah, I got it with Soft Aid too. It wasn't the best game on the compilation by a long chalk, but it was good enough fun. I thought the difficulty level was a bit on the nightmare side of things to start with, but it did reward some practice.

One of the things that most impressed me about it was the continuous tune that plays throughout; that was a bit of a step forward from the likes of Jet Set Willy at the time. The graphics were a bit blocky, but in an obvious attempt to reduce the colour clash which mostly worked quite well.

I got it on Soft Aid too, first time I had seen it actually :)

I was never very good at it at all, a couple of pick ups and that was about it.

The rzx and even the demo make it look easy.

I do think there was potential to make 'more' in this game though, like more screens or a larger map, it kind of has an 'unfinished' feel to it, to me at least.
  • I think I got it on a Crash covertape. I tried to play it recently but I was useless at it.

Not a bad game, but I'd rather load Bagman up on MAME tbh.

I also got it on Soft Aid - and it turned out to be one of my favourites on that compilation.

I did get pretty handy at it anyway. Completed Sorcery too

Gilligan's is pretty good once you get the hang of it.

Love it. I also discovered it for the first time on Soft-Aid. Great music too. Tough, but it plays like a proppa arcade game.

I got it on the soft aid tape, too!! There's a pattern emerging here!! Is there anyone who actually bought this game at all? ;)

I brought my SoftAid tape new at the time :) , does that count ? , or did you mean actually brought the original release ?

Soft Aid here also.. Didn't they record "Do They Know It's Christmas?" at the beginning of both sides of the tape? Should have whacked it on the end.. Pain in the arse having to fast-forward through it to get to the first game - and to do it again on side two was just cruel!

What was on that compilation again? Without using infoseek (yet) - Gilligan's Gold, Cauldron, Kokatoni Wilf and some Q-Berty thing, amongst others..

Edit - Spellbound was the Q-Bert clone. Some OK ones on there. Jack and the frigging beanstalk! I only ever got off the first screen once (kept falling while trying to climb up) and then I think I got killed on the second or 3rd screen and it sent me back to the first!

Starbike was meh, Kokotoni Wilf was excellent, The Pyramid was OK, Horace Goes Skiing is Horace - nuff said, Gilligan's Gold (momentary thread re-railment!) was pretty good, Ant Attack has always been great, 3D Tank Duel was OK if you like Battlezone (I kind-of do) and Sorcery was pretty good as I remember it.

Cauldron wasn't on there after all.. Oh well.. I think it was on Now Games 2 or something.

The graphics could have been better, but it's a funny game, decent conversion.

I love all these early 80's arcade games, by the way.

We played it in the Speccy Tour 2004, and it's the only game so far, I was capable of winning. Maybe because it is so bloody hard. Yes, I honestly mean that. It's much faster than the arcade it seems, or am I wrong?

If you like to show us your skills, please beat my score at HARP Spectrum Zone:

If you like to give it a go, I'll let you know what to do, to play according to the rules, so that your submitted score doesn't get DQ'ed. We can't have that :)

I played it first on Softaid too,its a little bit wobbly with collision detection and all that but i liked it,i agree with loading Bagman up on MAME to play the original inspiration for it but to be honest Gilligans is a pretty good effort.
Ps it was far better than Sorcery anyways lol

I bought and played the original!

Only joking, I played it on the Softaid comp too!

yep - sorcery was no great shakes.
flick screen game with about 20 screens as far as I can remember.

Maybe I'll play that one next:p

Sorcery was a decent idea, but let down a bit by the coding; about what you'd expect for a teenager working in compiled BASIC. If you find the version on Soft Aid a little bit underwhelming, I'd suggest taking a look at the improved version released on Now Games 3. Even better is the disk version for the Amstrad CPC, released as Sorcery Plus, which also expands on the gameplay ideas.

Top game this, I loved the barmy way the player walked and the colours.

I tried playing it in Spin recently and was more hopeless with it than ever, the keys were bad enough on the spectrum but translated to pc keyboard are a nightmare!

    Softaid too!

Used to love that game, though I do seem to recall the keys not being terribly well chosen too. And yes, I had it on SoftAid too.

I'm planning on having a go at a remake of Gilligan's (probably in .net) if anyone would be interested.

I'd use a good key layout too!

    Would anyone fancy it?

For the GP2X it'd make my day.

Well it would just be a stand alone executable to run on your PC.

    No emulators required.

I got this free with an issue of Crash...have since got the original in a bundle with loads of other old games though!

I quite like it, but I'm totally rubbish at it....still play it for nostalgia reasons sometimes nonetheless....:)
