Ashens reviews Renegade 3

edited January 2011 in Games
Just found this while wasting time on Youtube.

I remember when i first found this site and started downloading all my childhood memories, I was surprised to see Renegade 3 listed. Did they make a Renegade 3? I didn't realise they made a Renegade 3. I downloaded it and loaded it up strait away. The second the game started, I realised I did know that it existed and I had infact brought it many years ago. It's a game so bad, that I'd wiped it from my memory

..as the review stated at the end,... let us never utter its name again...

...Its a wonder that the users didn't band together and storm the software magazine offices after reviews as misleading as that!...

...a crushing disappointment, magnified tenfold by the quality of its predecessors...

Bit harsh, I actually didn't think Renegade 3 was too bad.. Not worthy of a Crash Smash and not as good as Target; Renegade but I'm sure there were a lot worse full price games around at the time.

Is it really that bad? I've never played it but i did like Renegade and Target Renegade.

Yes, it really is that bad. And incredibly repetitive - if you watch any playthrough videos of the game (as you should not actually waste your time playing it yourself) you will notice how the way the enemies behave is the same in each stage, so while the background/enemy graphics for each stage are different, they all play the same: you walk about a bit trying to avoid fighting enemies wherever you can until you arrive at a temporary dead end where you are surrounded by 6 enemies - this happens a few times in each stage if my memory serves correctly. Awful.

Plus while the graphics are fairly detailed, there is no colour. The first two games were so much better. I wouldn't say this is the worst Speccy game ever as people always say, since there are plenty of even shittier games, but it certainly tarnishes the reputation of the franchise and just is no fun to play at all. The loading screen probably was the best thing about the game.

Nah the music on the 128k machines was the best thing about it. Having recently played the C64 version Target: Renegade, it seems as if they copied the way that played rather than continue with the gameplay of the Spectrum prequels.

For example, it was a one player game just like the C64 version of TR.

The enemies don't actually fall & lay on the floor when you hit them, they just slide back a bit, again just like the C64 version of TR.

It's a real shame that Mike Lamb didn't code the 3rd game.

Ooh, that's me. The one who looks like he's escaped from Guantanamo Bay.

Indeed, Stuart and I bonded over our mutual hatred of Renegade 3 and mutual love of Megabucks.

Maybe I can make up for Renegade 3 in some way...
