    Thats a shame.

I doubt there's huge amounts of money to be made by Elite here, and I'd assume that Smith would have made a few quid when he signed over the copyright.

You will be pleasantly surprised to find that Jester Interactive don't hold the rights and that Matthew Smith will be getting his share. :D

Elite even has a nice hand-written letter from him expressing his interest in the application and offering to help with any promotion.

I keep getting an error everytime - you are not a test user , please select a sandbox enviroment ?

James, I see that Gremlin titles have been added. Do you know if any Ocean/Imagine titles will be included in future releases?

    Is the emulation colour-cycle accurate?

Searching online, either the in-app purchase is not live (we think it is), you are using a developer's test account or have been doing a little bit of jailbreaking.

    Do any of these apply?

    Hi,

In regards to future titles all I can say is that commercial agreements have been reached for over 200 games. Some of which people will be more than happy with ;)

In response to the failed in app purchase i'm not quite sure why you're getting that error unless your device is jailbroken or you are a developer who's forgot to log out of an existing test user account for IAP's? You're the first person to comment on this currently, it maybe feasible that a connection error could have also led to you getting that message back?

In any case from myself Steve and JMK we would like to thank you for all the support shown for the app so far and we also like to add that feedback is important to us and we do endeavour to take it on board.

Hi Matt. Thanks for a wonderful app - I tried to promote it here when you had the HD version on sale for 59p, but no-one seemed to notice!

I can't wait to see what other titles you have lined up... :)

I moved that thread to Announcements now, as Chit Chat doesn't seem the appropriate place for Spectrum related announcements. ;-)

Oh, and welcome to WoS, Matt!

Interesting... have you managed to do an in-app purchase with anything else?

Just checked my apps , no , none of my other apps have in-app purchases , just the elite spectrum app.

I think the only app i have that would use this feature is the elite spec , i have downloaded Vol.2 but that didn't incur a charge.

    What a damn shame !

    Thanks for the welcome :)

In response to the IAP issue i'd definitely put it down to the jailbroken device I think.

I'm not that hot on JB devices but i'm guessing you could download the official firmware for the device perhaps and then put it back onto it, but don't quote me on that.

One up for the publishers I think ;)

Not really as i can't buy it - so the publisher loses the money , its only jailbroken so i can use my orange sim , no other reason , i pay and download all my apps via the app store , the other games in vol 1 and 2 work fine , ill just use them.

Agreed - the best Emulator on the App store in my opinion. I had my iPhone 4 jailbroken to run the iXSpectrum emulator, but the Elite Spectrum app does such a good job, what with the superb iDaptive control system, each game modified to make it easy to navigate game menus, and a steady flow of decent game packs at attractive prices, I've now un-jailbroken my phone (it can be un-jailbroken by updating the iPhone/iPod touch software), purchased all the game packs and am thoroughly enjoying playing them.

I know this may sound weird, but the problem I have found with emulators is that because I can run hundreds or thouands of games, I am too spoiled for choice and end up not playing one particular game for very long at all. The Elite Spectrum app narrows this game selection down (36 games at the time of writing) and while there are fewer games available than running unlicensed games on another emulator ... it actually means I pay more attention the games that are available.

It's also nice to be able to obtain legitimate copies of ZX Spectrum games again - something that has pretty much only been possible by purchasing the original game cassettes via eBay/car boot sale, etc until now.

I'm really looking forward to volumes 7 to 10, but I wonder if I could make a request about Manic Miner - can we have an extra key added which toggles the music on and off (keys H to ENTER do this on a real ZX Spectrum).

Yep good point, thats one thing about emulation, you tend to go through so many games quickly, if you loaded them up you would play on them longer.

Enjoying the Speccy series, only had a quick go. Can you choose a joystick instead ? Say for Chuckie Egg, all those keys makes it a bit tricky, if there was a joystick on screen it would be much easier.
  • edited January 2011
Virtual keys or virtual joystick, you're going to have the same basic problem. The iPhone's only really good for games based around the gesture and tilt controls and everything else is going to be a compromise.
  • edited January 2011
I must admit i thought i would hate virtual joysticks, getting to grips with them now and having a lot of fun on some of the platform games (And Ghost n Goblins). Think the virtual joystick works really well

Need to play my Speccy one more (Cant at the mo - super gadget is broken:cry: and see if i can do anything else apart from all those keys (the diagonal ones etc). Just seem much more trickier than a virtual joystick
  • edited January 2011
Personally, I've been using 4 direction keys for platformers like Chuckie Egg (dragged the diagonal keys off the screen to delete them) with up/down positioned on one side of the screen and left/right on the other side, sort of mimiking a QAOP setup on a real spectrum, with a giant jump button at the bottom middle. For a closer speccy feeling, I've played with the phone on a table with different fingers assigned to a key like I would with a real speccy (shame I can't rest them on the touch-screen like I would rest them on the keys).

I see that volumes 7 to 10 have been submitted to the app store with a price of ?1.19 per pack. While it's double the price of previous packs, we are still only talking 20p a game which I think is still a very good price and if it improves the chances of getting a steady release of really good games, there'll be no complaints from me (Commodore64 app publishers take note - you need to release more games and release them cheaper than 59p per game).

Thanks for all the kind words about the app.

It's been a lot of effort with the next update and once it comes out you'll know why!

Some of the new content was a real bitch for me and James to get in. Again a big thanks to James on the app as he really is a great coder with a huge passion for ZX and retro gear.

Sorry to say we've had to rethink the pricing slightly but it should help us to keep making the app even better secure better games and also work on some other top secret projects. We would have initially launched the app at a slightly higher price although for certain circumstances we wanted to stick to 59p.

In regards to controls YES we have a virtual stick included although as with any iphone game it's always going to be difficult to play whilst touching a flat piece of glass. This is why I created the idaptive control system as it was kind of our way of saying to people, hey here you go just make the best controls to suit you. Of course some games will natrually work a lot better namely the turn based games (ahem) or other slow based puzzle type games.

However, for those lucky enough to have an ipad the app plays like a dream on it and is very easy to control on any game too.

Speaking of which I must get bck to finishing off all the gfx and frontend for it now so that the next update for it can go out close after the iphone update.

Keep looking out for it soon!

    Matt

I'll be buying every single one for sure. The price increase is nothing, i mean i look back to the 80's and games for ?1.99, now look all these years later, can get these classics for the iphone at a low low price.

Would love to see Bounder on one of the compilation packs (unless i've missed it), think it would work very well with the keys/joystick etc.

Anyway cant wait to see the other packs

I've now bought all the Speccy apps, really enjoying it and looking forward to seeing whats in apps 7-10.

Would love to see Bounder in the Apps, think it would work very well on the iphone.

Can you tell us whats in the next game packs ? Or how soon they're released once Apple goes through it ?

Once an app is sub'd to apple it can take anywhere up to 3-5 days for it to go into review and then anywhere up to 1-2 weeks for them to either pass it or reject it.

We will put the app live as soon as the approve it.

In regards to games we do like to keep you all in anticipation unfortunately but all I can say is that you won't be disappointed.

Updating the app is not so much a tricky process as it is time consuming due to the games needing to be hacked in some cases and also digging out the help texts and other UI goodness.

Overall we have a significant amount of games to choose from now with some real gems.

Have you tried the ipad version too?
  • edited January 2011
I totally understand, i look forward to being surprised when i see the next few game packs !

Havent got an ipad so cant try that but really enjoying them on the ipod. Surely Bomb Jack (As elite did the conversion) is on one of the upcoming ones ? Now that would make me veryyyy happy !

3d Deathchase is another which could work very well
