Tonsillitis...

edited January 2011 in Chit chat
...I've got it. never had it before. Very painful swallowing.

Has anyone else had it? What I was wondering is whether its a valid illness to be off work with (I called in sick today so I could see the doc), or whether I should stop being a wuss and go back in tomorrow.

I had it a couple of years ago. Quite nasty.
Mine was certainly bad enough to warrant time off of work.
  • It's a valid excuse to eat obscene amounts of ice cream!
  • edited January 2011
Don't think I've got any ice cream..

Basically the doc said best not to take drugs, just garlic capsules and gargle with salt water a few times a day.. I think the bloke who was in with him was seriously ill so my problem probably seemed a bit trivial. Having said that I've gone into work with colds & things, but this feels far worse.

Will probably see how I feel tomorrow, if it gets any worse I won't go in. If it gets better I might.

I quite liked that banana stuff, it was the Orange coloured anti-biotic stuff that was really foul looked appetizing, even smelled quite nice, but the taste of it ergh! It was so bitter and chemical I can't even think of anything to compare it with :D

Aggree - used to be on a running prescription until i was 21 cos I had it so often.

Then i got glandular fever and was laid low for over 6 weeks - after that my GP insisted I have em out or he wouldn't prescribe for it any more.

Most painfull experience of my life :( and i never got ice cream - just dry toast.

I was off work for a week with it a few years ago (only time I've ever had it). Mind it was only about a month after I'd had a serious throat operation so it was a bit of a double-dose so to speak! I felt really ill, couldn't eat anything and even drinking was painful.

So yup, I think you're fully justified in having a few days off!

I've had problems with them since my teens. They usually flare up at least once a year. They are always large even if I am feeling okay. Since moving to the states they started doing something new every now and then and that is I will get painful shooting pains down my neck. I went in to see the doc about a month ago and he said I should get them out. Trouble is this being the wonderful US of A they want $6000 to do it with $1000 up front. So that's not going to happen then...

The thing is I have been paying the hospital $100 a month for the past 3 years without fail to pay off another medical bill I had. You would think they could just add this to my balance. The health care over here is so screwed up. They go about how high quality the care is here but that doesn't help if you can't afford health insurance. I know a lot of people just ignore health issues. At least in Blighty you will get most things done (eventually) without a huge bill.

I am waiting until I get my tax return will get in done then though.

I stupidly made pizza and chips for dinner. Somehow managed to eat it over the course of about an hour, but most of the time I looked a bit like this:

Luckily nobody was around to see it..

I think a lesson learned here, you live in the UK, they dont help you in any way (whatever the doctors tell you, it just makes their job easier to identify other illnesses you may have (my wifes a senior staff nurse and she knows what shes on about)), get an appointment to have em pulled mate, honestly, its the best thing you can do, never happen again, and that in itself is worth the op!

Removing the tonsils is still a surgical operation.

I had mine removed years ago, and if I had the chance to undo I'd do it immediately. The operation went pretty well, but the wound was very painful.

Every now and then I still have this burning sensation near the cut, so my advice is: please, please, think twice before removing.

I used to have them quite often, It would make me really sick, with high fever, etc... (I usually had them every turn of season) it was something for me to spend 2 to 3 days in bed...

havent had them for 3 or 4 years now

As some people said above, I got my tonsils removed when I was 3 or 4 years old. At that time (in the middle 70s) it was very commom children got their tonsils removed. Doctors claimed tonsils were a focus of infection.

However, nowadays doctors think the opposite, tonsils are good to protect from infection... sort of. They must make up their mind!

One of my earliest memories is entering in the operating room and hours after the operation, trying to speak and couldn't do it... scary...

there was that interview about a year ago. its was with a bloke that had his tonsils removed, they mucked it up and did somethin to his voice box and he ended up with a high pitch voice like a girl.

the interviewer couldn't keep a straight face as he described how is life was a living hell.

it'll be on youtube but cant search for it as im at work.

The 'funniest' ones are where someone has some weird illness where they then talk with a french accent for example.

Had someone on the news the other day, she was from the north but i think was ill in hospital, she then got this condition where she talks with an accent, sounded odd.

'Conditions' like that (and tourettes) you surely are allowed to talk about and laugh at arent you ?

Edit - Found the news item...

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/gloucestershire/hi/people_and_places/newsid_8996000/8996954.stm

Think she sounds far better with the french accent! To be fair you would be gutted if you had this but had a 'Borat' type accent. People would purposely ask you 'is that food nice ?' just for you to say 'yes its niceeeeeeeeee'

Why bother going into work at all if you are feeling ill? What's wrong with this country??!? You spread your germs AND, snd this is the main one, why be a martyr? You won't get anything out of it at the end of the day!

It's people like you that make me sick! ha

Well, I woke up today, it's still extremely painful to swallow, but my throat is now horribly swollen, can still breathe but it's much more difficult. On top of that it feels like someone is choking my windpipe so when I speak I sound a bit like a munchkin... :-(

Just got back from Asda with some Ibuprofen, Paracetamol and Berocca. Hopefully they'll help easy some of the discomfort. I've e-mailed work and told them that I'm not gonna be in either today or tomorrow.

Seriously good point though. Some people just wont stay at home forever, they think 'i've never had a day off sick in 45 years...' is impressive.

You get someone coming in with a cold, then eventually a few people in the office will catch it and it'll just get worse and worse.

Simply have a day off if you feel like crap. You might feel 'okay' in the warmth of your bed with the heating on but the second youre in work, stuff to do, phones ringing, stress, you'll start really feeling like crap.

If you had 3 weeks off because of a slight sore throat then feel guillty, but its far far better to stay at home and get better than spread it.

Yeah seen that before, it's kinda funny, but it makes you feel like you really shouldn't be laughing at it. I don't know weither to feel sorry for the guests or the host? Basically cos' everybody has been in a situation where you know laughing is the worst thing you could ever do but just can't help yourself :D

    So here it is....

Haha, cheers..! I actually sound a bit more like Alan Partridge when his fan 'the mentalist' has him in a headlock (if you know the episode) but I've been trying to avoid speaking to anyone all day anyway..

That clip is a classic, didn't realise it was real & that everyone lost their jobs after it..?! There are similar clips of newsreaders 'losing it' after hearing something funny but they normally manage to regain their composure after a bit.. You think he's just about got it together and then you hear the guy in the audience..

Well after all that it all went a bit t*ts up, I got loads worse by Friday, side of my face was in agony. Went to see my GP again on Friday morning, was sent straight to hospital, have been on drips, drugs & everything for the last few days and have just now made it back home...! :-o

Am on antibiotics but feel a bit better now; the doc has signed me off work for a week, so I've now got an exact answer to my own thread question! Luckily I've just started playing Fallout: New Vegas so shouldn't be too bored..
