I remember having trouble unpausing Avalon a few times, and having to reload the game, which wasn't so much strange as downright enfuriating. Did anyone else have this problem, or was it just me?
Strangest thing was when I was loading Arkanoid 2 and during loading something happened and the loading screen had some "The beatles" logos all over...
For many years it was a mystery for me until someone here told me that it was a hidden screen. I also had a link of some other secret screens from other games.
I accidently found the level unlock on Halls of the things by trying to pause it (also made it Black and white in the process) a long time before the info appeared in magazines.
Not really a pause-unpause thing, but I was pretty good at randomly finding game glitches. Examples include Zorro, Barbarian, Strike Force Cobra.
Me and my brother were quite pleased with ourselves when we pressed "0" on the vehicle selection screen in Ghostbusters, and were rewarded with a "ghost car" (as we called it) that could hold lots of traps:
I was very pleased to discover the SHIFT (iIrc) cheat in Gauntlet, the cheat which allows you to walk through walls ... but it also completely ruined the game for me and my friends.
Not on the Speccy, but I was once playing Bubble Bobble in the arcade with a friend when it gave us both invincibility. We played for ages, but eventually both got trapped in the scenery at about level 80 or 90 something.

That happened to me and a mate once while playing Area 51. We had to leave the game during the third playthrough as they needed to shut the shopping centre for the evening. Our arms were knackered. :-D
Not quite a pause mode thing either, but very strange....There was a game that came on a covertape (SU Megatape 25!) called Death Zone...and my brother and I discovered that if you half press the reset button on a 128k, it skips to the next level!
You had to be careful though, as it sometimes just reset...
The 128k version of Black Lamp. An hour or so of playing the game and the music gradually started to sloow doowwn annd loooweer innnn pitchhhhh. Brrrrrrrrrrrr.

Until it reset itself.
Ooer!
Oh yeah! I think that was to do with it getting harder as it goes along, so it chucks more stuff on screen, slowing down the framrate and making the Speccy go "Sod this!"....
I think I mentioned this in a thread years ago, but I'm not 100% sure? But back when I was a kid and I hadn't yet got my own copy of Jet Set Willy II, I used to get my best mate to come across the street and load his copy into my Speccy. which mean that sometimes my SPeccy would remain on for days on end
My ma even used to come into my room while I was sleeping or at school to make sure I'd turned it off.
But anyway after after being on solidly for about 36 hours straight I either got up and turned to TV on to resume, or I'd came home from school don't remember which, but something strange had happened. nearly all the stairs teleported you to a different room while you walked onto them, but they didn't if you jumped onto them, also several random blocks of corrupted whatever had appeared in several screens, and they killed you if you touched them, some of them made easy to cross screens impassible. Also there was a little bit of snow on the screen every now and then usually when switching between rooms.
It was actually quite fun, I got to see several rooms I hadn't yet visited, although in a slightly corrupted form, and it was a bit like playing a new JSW game.
Anyway I left my Speccy on loads of times more after it happened but never managed to get it to happen again? My Speccy survived as well! If that had've happened today I'd have been switching it off and blowing icy cold air onto it to cool it down and panicking
The only time I can recall discovering an actual cheat/glitch myself is the Match Day one - where if you score in the 90th minute the clock goes funny and then the game just goes on forever.
Mind you, there were a few odd glitchy moments that could happen in that game IIRC.

I stupidly did that for Jet Set Willy in one particular room as i heard after about 24 hours or so a yacht appears, did it ? Nope ! Just had one hot speccy i could fry an egg off

Thats the computer Sir Alex Ferguson feature kicking in...

I seem to think that was part of an April Fool gag by Your Spectrum / Sinclair? Can't quite remember, but believe that's where the myth originated.

Eh? Were you using some kind of super-dooper fan unit or something? I couldn't leave the Speccy on for more than a couple of hours for fear of it overheating...
