Just watched Dark Star again

edited March 2011 in Chit chat
I recently purchased a copy of the film Dark Star for ten euros and watched it again over the weekend.
This was John Carpenter's first film, made on a budget of $60,000.

Just as laugh out loud funny as it was the first time I saw it 20+ years ago...

The special effects have stood up well I think to the ravages of time as well.
(Well, maybe not Bill Froog's 8 track powered personal video diary. ;) )

Interestingly, you can watch the whole film via streaming media from the link referenced at the bottom of the page hyperlinked above.

It could be said that Dark Star lay the foundation for films/series such as Alien and Red Dwarf.

Anyone else remember this movie?

Well, Dan O'Bannon did write Alien ;)

Never seen this though. I'm a bit of a John Carpenter fan, but I've never seen this in the shops or on telly so I've never remembered to look for it online.
Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.

    It's an utter classic!

And it not only could be said that it laid the foundation for Alien - it did. Straight from the mouth of Dan O'Bannon Alien was conceived as (originally) a horror version of Dark Star - where DS had a comedy alien, Alien had the bloody evil one.

Alien did (in it's original draft) also draw from many other B movie horrors.

Hehe...the alien is slightly less scary in Dark Star than in Alien isn't it!?!

I watched it last year and found it to be quite good! :)

I think I've seen Dark Star before? But I'm not sure it would've been absolutely years ago, but it sounds really familiar?

With John Carpenter films, the usual rule of thumb is that the bigger the budget is the worse the results are.

I wouldn't quite say it's his best, but it's certainly up there; it's also very out there as well.

one of my FAV sci fi movies ever!!!!

remember taping it off bbc2 in the ninties, and not having enough tape ..... therefore it cutoff when pinback was chasing balloon alien into the elevator shaft!!!

i watched it plenty of times right upto the tape stopped!

i've also saw it on the bigscreen, with a double feature with DUNE!!! (at the glasgow film theatre)

now i have the anniversary edition on dvd ..... and i LOVE the theme song too!!!
