Fray Bentos

edited March 2011 in Chit chat
No not the pies. The FlikR account. I stumbled on this little Gem purely by accident, its full of loads of retro pictures about 20 century Britain. Buildings, houses, buses and trains.

Its a great archive and I just thought it might be of interest to some of you folks. He really has an eye for whats interesting to me about the 20th century aesthetic.

I'm assuming it's a lager in the photo, but it also looks strangely like a milkshake!

    yep pink lager

no it's crusha.. although a lot of my photos feature the odd bit of booze.. no wine yet.. although that might soon change :)

whats on the right of the milkshake? and don't say a plate :p

lol, I thought it looked a bit pink, but thought it was a trick of the light. Plus milkshake with a pie? Weird!

As for the rest of it, it looks like good old pie and bread, unless you've hidden a Twix under the pie or something... ;)

Did you know that Fray Bentos is also a town in Uruguay.

Also, if you rearrange the letters in Fray Bentos, you get: Ban Toe Frys

Which I support 100%. I like mine made of potato.

Unsurprisingly, that's where they got the name from. There's an old meat processing factory that's now a museum; apparently they get a lot of tourists from Europe heading there.

There's also the ancient joke that when a football team gets relegated they'll sell their star play to Juventus and the rest of the team to Frey Bentos.

Yep, it's our favourite. Here's a list of the ones they currently do:

(actually it's not 100% correct - they have a Just Chicken too)

Will definitely look out for those, though it'll be the summer before I'm next back in old Blighty. Currently I'm down to my last 'Steak and Ale' .

Can you believe the the Dutch don't *do* pies, in fact they don't even have a word for them. Barbarians!

No bacon never really did it for me, but a boiled bacon joint, nice spicy sausage, or scotch (mutton) piss and then you might have my interest.

Discovered two more when I went into Poundland this morning (oh yes, I only shop at the finest places), that aren't listed on their website:

    Minced Beef & Veg
    Steak & Onion

So the whole range that I'm aware of is:

    Steak and Kidney Pie
    Steak and Mushroom Pie
    Steak and Ale Pie
    Steak and 3 Veg Pie
    Chicken and Mushroom Pie
    Chicken Curry Pie
    Minced Beef and Onion Pie
    Just Steak
    Just Chicken
    Minced Beef & Veg
    Steak & Onion

I'm also aware that I have too much time on my hands and/or an unhealthy obsession with Fray Bentos pies.

hehe , no mate.. it's called not filling up your arteries with even more crap ;) . I bet you grill most stuff yourself.. assuming you cook that is .. if you fry so much, you have fried bread ? if not then your a lightweight (vile stuff whoever invented that)

mousey , no your not obsessed "you like what you like" .. I wondered what the 3 veg was to be honest..

murc.. vesta curries aren't in the same league c'mon.. (says he who never tried one) .. they are propa 70's food

they did a round up of steak / kindey pies in a tabloid about 6 months / year ago and it came out top or near the top. it's not as unhealthy as people assume because it's in a tin. It's something I'll cook maybe 1 or 2 times a month :)

I did make a bentos steak / kidney for an ex and her flatmate, both had never had one. They were surprised it was out of a tin I think

I bought a Mc Vities Jamaican ginger cake last month. that reminds me of the 80's as much as the frey bentos does :)

I used to go past United Biscuits ( Mc Vities / kp) as a kid to collect my mum from work (in Heinz) and you'd always smell biscuits

(and when I went past the trafford centre when I was seeing someone up north.. she found it funny I was surprised thats where kellogs was)

My wife's American parents were here a couple of years ago, and we cooked them a dinner of Fray Bentos pie (I think it was the Steak & Ale) and vegetables.

They both enjoyed it, but her Dad was raving on about how great they were and that he was going to see if they could get them in America! And these are people that eat well - they aren't fast food junkies.

I was shocked how much he liked it.

is that a fight club for cheese ? :)

when I went Canada I was also shocked how much things were , well cheesey..

prolly coz them hersey bars sucked (hence why kraft bought cadbury)

I introduced her to frey bentos.. and got to know about glutinous rice (desert) in return :D

I find food is like music in a sense, there is a fair bit of snobbery about it.
