It's definitely Stonkers

edited October 2004 in Games
Being around here for a couple of months, I have noticed that Imagine's old Stonkers is getting a rough beating here, at least indirectly!

I think Stonkers was great! True honest to God I did! It was the first ever game I played that wasn't really action-oriented (although you had to check that each unit was in attack advantage all the time), it had a huge scrolling map with a bridge and all, and it let you have to check supplies continuously (the best was to fill up supplies just before heading off to face the enemy). And most of all: the atmosphere! I thought the slowness and the decaying game style captured the notion of WAR in a really grippling way!

And NO! I am not kidding! I actually thought this when I was a kiddie, playing Stonkers.

Though I had a look at it recently on Spectaculator. And boy, it's one hell of a poor game indeed. But still!

I love Stonkers too, as it is the only military strategy game on the Spectrum I ever got into, mainly due to it's simplicity. It is like a pre-historic Advance Wars but could do with a few more maps as once you have figured out how to win, you will never lose again.

I'm kinda curious - why was Stonkers chosen as the obligatory game of the 'Name the Game' threads?

    It's all Robert@fm's fault. :)

I suggest we choose a different game to take the piss out of. Let's have a vote on it.

    Here are the possible choices.

    1. Election (possibly the worst game I've ever played. It's so boring).
    2. Advanced Lawnmower Simulator (although this one is a classic for a reason LOL!!!).
    3. Knight Lore (we have to include a good game).

    I vote for Election.

    Necros.

Talking about strategy games: Confrontation. Now that was a game that thrilled me. I didn't understand zilch of it - were you supposed to play with a mate? - but it didn't really matter. I loaded it up several times, moving around those tanks and jeeps and stuff and planes and whatelse, just for the fun of it.

Played Laser Squad today! Although I played HUGE amounts of Chaos and Rebelstar Raiders 2, I actually didn't play Laser Squad back then. It's a great game but boy is it difficult.

    Hmmmmm....

    I propose:

    "It's definately not Chaos."

aha, and then there was light... I thought you`d all gone stark raving mad... ... bonkers that is...

Just as a aside, I`ve never player Laser Squad, Choas or the other famous one and am DAMN proud... ok, ashamed if truth be known, but they looked too time intesive :)

I believe we already have a thread for you heathens to proclaim you denial of Chaos in.

aha, you see, there`s the difference, despite being an over poster, I deliberately and respectfully kept outa that one... as I sadly don`t know the joys of these games :)

I am interested however, even remember on FRED disk mag for years they had a top 10 of groups playing Chaos, least I think it was chaos, bus I was in hospital for a few years and had no one to play it with :)

Perhaps it`d be a good game, if ever we get networked emulators, seems to be very well thought of...

Stonkers is an OK game, but on my real Speccy it crashed all the time mid-game. I was beginning to suspect at one point that it was impossible to complete because of this! It wasn't until I got to play it on an emulator that I managed to win a game.

    This is the reason:

Simple as that. Voting for a new game to use really won't work, since the "Stonkers" reference is to far ingrained in peoples minds now.

I knew I seen that before, but I couldn't remember where. The one that intrigues me is why is issue 18 of Crash thought to be rare ?
Is it because of the 'bondage' cover ?

You reading too much into it. The whole thing started something like this:

Poster1: Does anyone have a copy of Crash issue 18?
    Poster2: What's so special about Issue 18?
    Poster3: Mmmmmm Issue 18.
Poster4: THERE IS NO ISSUE 18.
    etc...

Just one of those moments of css surreality.

As for Stonkers, it's just inherently less funny with most other titles. Stonkers just "sounds right"

    Here's one...

Is it Super Mario Fruit Machine?

Shouldnt those games have VOILENT ratings???

Hardly. It's a strategy sim. Unless you find some proof that some evil tyrant made a bid for world domination based on playing Stonkers as a child, then I don't think there's any need to worry.

    George Bush?

Are you saying that the whole iraq business was due to George Bush playing stonkers?

    sounds about right..

Well, I don't know about Bush and Stonkers, but I DO know he's slightly bonkers. :D
