Loading from Tape Player

edited March 2011 in Hardware
Ok

I have a rubber key 48k. I can load games from the output of my pc just fine.

I got a sony shoebox tape player off Macc and it just won't load.

it 'hears' some of what the tape is playing, but its like its not loud enough or something.

any ideas?

Have a look for "tone" controls as well as volume? I guess you can also try a different tape lead and importantly make sure the ear connector is pushed all the way in. I have an old Reader's Digest Spacetone tape deck who ear socket is a bit funny and requires a bit of force to ensure the connector is fully in.

This player has no tone control.

    tried a different lead

    still no joy.

It should be loud enough, have you tried turning it down a bit? full volume does not work usually with all tapes. Try adjusting the volume up and down. Is it saying tape error when its finished playing?

i'll try playing with the volume, i get tape loading with a couple of games, others just hang on the red/blue border.

definately a problem with the tape player; just tried a different machine (borrowed and no the most suitable long term)

loads fine with a different tape player.

Sounds like it wants an azimuth reline and a good clean.

Theres a screw that adjusts the tape head in line with the tape. This link is a bit long winded but you should get what hes doing.

There might be a small hole on top of the case near the area where the magnetic head is. Get a small Philips screw driver (back in the old days, any serious Spectrum user kept one of these nearby). While listening to the loading noise, slowly adjust the azimuth screw until the sound is as clear as possible. That should do the trick. If there is no hole for azimuth adjusting, get another tape player. :-D

Here in the U.S. I bought a brand new tape player from Radio Shack and it has everything I need. But my old Sony walkman does the same job without any adjustments.

    edit: Meh, too slow. :-P

Load up a tape and run it. As the tape starts to load adjust the screw looking at the loading lines, thats how I adjust it anyway. Once youv done that thats it. There still might be the odd tape that doesnt load of cors but most will. Then go back to adjusting the volume.

Some tape decks doesn't have the hole at the top so you have to open the deck ( as if your inserting a tape) and press play so you can get at the screw.
