I was always frightened of Tommy whe I was a kid  I suppose it was that Fez and his laugh that did it. I don't know why, but everytime he came on TV, I'd start to cry and leave the room. I think he's seriously funny now though :-)

"Tommy Cooper: Always Leave Them Laughing" is a great and sad book about him.

I remember just walking in to my local pub at the time. Bought a pint and the telly was on.Tommy Cooper. I think it was a Sunday night. He was talking away as he usually was, then all of a sudden he fell backwards. A few people in the crowd laughed then he was dragged under the stage curtains. Few seconds later there was a commercial. The people stood at the bar said it was a bit strange what had happened and when the commercial had finished they said he had been sent to hospital. Later on the news said he had been rushed to hospital during a live performance. Always remember that night somehow.

I remember that night, IIRC Jimmy Tarbuck was hosting. He fell backwards and you just saw two huge feet and heard really deep heavy breathing.

    Very eerie and sad.
I wanna tell you a story 'bout a woman I know...

whats funny is he reminds me of a mate who is a bit tight with money..

he used to pay exact fare in a cab, put a teabag in the top pocket of a cabbies pocket as a tip and pat it and say "have a drink on me"

I did have a look at the clip, he just well , goes down like someone let the air out of him ? Although at least he went out where he did.

I'd never seen that I though, they put the curtain up when that was on tv / there was a delay ?!?! (some tv used to be filmed 1-2+ hour ahead.. as I used to go to some)

He was known for making tricks go wrong which made the audience/backstage people to think it was part of the act, apparently the stage had to be cornered off for the second part of show as the medics had to arrive, along with the popularity of the vhs recorder, alot of people inadvertently recorded his last moments.

Tommy Cooper was a brilliant comedian. Even amongst the best he stood out - I'd say he was possible the funniest man on TV ever.

I mean, to me, the true test of a comedian is how well they do with bad material. Even someone as talentless as Graham Norton or Lenny Henry can get a laugh by using good material, but only someone with real talent can use bad or predictable material and still make you laugh. And Tommy Cooper's jokes were the sort of thing you grew out of in primary school, and yet he made those same jokes seem somehow hilarious.

Whatever his failings as a human being might have been, he was a true giant of comedy. And thankfully we still have his TV appearances to make us laugh.
