reinstalling an athlon xp heatsink

ok, I've got an old cpu that needs it's heatsink sorting.. it's an old athlon XP , but the stuff on the heatsink needs replacing.. as the bit where the chip was resting has worn thru

so I got some thermal grease + pads

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280642889228

the pad looks like sticky tape, is that right? whereas the old compound on the cpu itself is different.

obv. I need to clean the chip / heatink , but I am just worried that pad is the wrong thing.

and if so, whats the compound to use on the heatsink, it's a square. (not the thermal grease)

thanks.

this confuses me more.. as it says not to use both.. but the tape looks like I got off the ebay think, looks like well it;d melt

I would simply clean both the CPU and heatsink of any previous compound/pads and then use silver thermal compound. Just a little on the cpu, spread thinly and evenly over it, and place the heatsink on top. Job done.

Maplin sell silver thermal compound fairly reasonably (about ?9 IIRC).

Throw the pads away, use some IP to clean the old paste off and fire her up

EDIT: after putting a little past on the processor of cors.

I dont think chemists sell it any more now though. I have a big bottle of the stuff to clean electrical connections also the heads on my tape recorders.

Lemon juice works well to clean old paste off.

You need about 1 drop of the silver paste and spread it (very) thinly on the chip. Don't be tempted to put loads on, it doesn't work as well. Only put the silver on the chip or the cooler, not on both. The chip is easier as you know where the full contact area is.

If you really want to do the job properly then you should lap the chip and cooler but its not worth doing that for a low end setup, it is, however, very relaxing in a strange way.
