It's not ramblings mate, I agree with you 110%! This is pretty much how I felt about GOW3, total letdown compared to the first 2 games.

Played Halo Reach much of yesterday and today. Managed to complete all four daily challenges yesterday and today so I'm doing well for this week's weekly.

Surprisingly, even though I suck at Elite Slayer I managed to get 20 kills in one of those matches on Boardwalk. The next nearest on my team only had about 12! Did I mention that I'm usually ****e at Elite Slayer? I think that's the most kills I've had in a team slayer match

Bought 4 games today, unfortunately I can only play 2 of them as the other 2 ain't 360 compatible. Bugger. Anyways, they were:

Borderlands - looks great, only played up until you get your secondary weapon. I chose the sniper. It was either him or the guy with the shotgun.

Halo - yes, I've never played the original (or the second) so this should be a good laugh.

Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath - Been after this for years (aswell as Munch's Oddyssee), unfortunately the 360 doesn't like it :(

ToeJam & Earl III - been after this for a while aswell. Okay the second one was crap, but I still want to see what this is like. Again the 360 won't play it.

Thankfully I can borrow an original Xbox on thursday :D

Borderlands cost ?12, the other 3 were ?4.99 each or 3 for a tenner. I thought I'd have to pay at least a tenner for TJ&E3 and Oddworld:SW because they're fairly rare titles. Gamestation just don't know what they're doing ever since Game bought them out a few years ago :D
Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.

I've just been playing Super Don Quix-Ote on the laser disc emulator.
Just googled that and saw a vid on the 'tube. Is that a Don Bluth game? Or is it just someone copying his animation style? It looks very similar to Dragon's Lair.

Yeah, it's pretty much the same. This is by Universal though and is different because it shows you what to press, but IMO you need better reflexes as you don't get as long to make the move . Sadly, after all this time looking for it, then getting it to work Ifind it's abit wonky! It plays fine for a while, but will eventually just play itself. Death scenes included!

A real shame as I've been bying to play this since I was a kid. My old local ice- rink had a machine and to this day, it's still the only one I've seen.

Yeah, it makes me even more sad seeing the enormous amount of effort which must have went into the production, unlike most people who don't care that's something I can recognize. There are many things which are so great, but these issues bring it down. It's silly considering they could have been changed so easily, at virtually no cost, if someone in charge would have thought of that early enough. OK, so you are bound by the stormy sky, so it must be grey naturally, but that's not an excuse to go for all grey. You can make the hell fiery red, you can make the caves of crystal, emerald or sapphire, to get bright white, green or blue environment (not to mention it would look way more awesome than the plain stock rock with specular bumped to insane levels - 'grease' as we call it), you replace rocks with the sandstone to get yellow instead, you make Gaia more wooden to get more brown and green, you make the chain from gold to get shiny yellow, judges made from gold or bronze, throwing in some more massive precious stones to get even more colors... There are so many better possibilities and it costs nothing... The same goes for the other things I mentioned, they were all just design decisions which should have been avoided. Pity, indeed.

Those multiple times you have to fly up or down the chain are also about as much fun as having your testicles set on fire.

Once is enough but 3 or 4 times, that to seemed like it was added to make the game last a little longer by throwing in something so touch and go you have to die about 75 times just to learn where every single obsticle is, and even then it's not easy. Levels like this aren't fun in any game, something that breaks up the regular action should at least be enjoyable. They got that idea right with say for instance the Pegasus flying level, or Icarus fight scene from GOW II.

Also I still tell one of my friends at work that across all 3 games Aries is the hardest boss, personally I find zeus a pushover in 2 and 3, wheras Aries takes some real effort to beat, and the fight is not prolonged by cheap tricks (but it can still take about 20 minutes to beat him in his second form).

Oh and I'll also agree that GOW II was pretty much the peak, all downhill from there I'm afraid, I mean don't get me wrong GOW III wasn't total trouser fudge, it just wasn't anywhere near as good as GOW II. The whole time I was playing it I was thinking to myself it looks nice, but it could have been done on the PS2, it really could have. Typical case of ooh a new machine so let's make the 3rd in a series for it even though the older machine can more than cope with it. The extras when you finish the game are somewhat lacking this time around as well, and the few that are available seem lazy and uninspired, hardly worth the effort of trying to get them all. Even the extras you get on the PSP prequels are better than the pitiful and depressing crud the third game half-willingly shoves across the table at you.

All of the above is sad really

Those multiple times you have to fly up or down the chain...

Hmm, haven't had much trouble with that - seems like dodging with the right stick makes it easy to avoid most things, kind of the rolling works with lava balls in Hades in GOW1. I suspect it makes you invulnerable for a short while.

But I know what you mean. I was cursing too when I flew to Hades for the last time, and I hit some obstacle. Your can't control your character for a while, which in turn means you immediately hit another obstacle, and another... Pretty bad design, evil feedback like this should be avoided at all cost...

Hmm, Ares is OK once you know the strategy for the second form. Go close to him, and hold L1 to block. Wait for as long as he slashes you, and once he goes to his "roaring" animation, start tapping [] to start the sequence of light attacks (make sure you let the L1 go before that, so you don't go into the spinning attack by accident). You'll lend few hits and then it *always* triggers the pushing minigame (I don't remember now if he can start blocking, if he does, just stop, block too and wait for him to start again). The minigame is the key to beating him, you do it few times and he is all yours. Of course, if he does any of the other attacks, just try to avoid them with rolling as usual. Now I don't know if his army of hades can be avoided, so chances are you'll loose anyway, but other than that this works pretty well.

But I agree it is still way better than Zeus in GOW3. This strategy is not so blatantly obvious and even when using it it's still an action-reaction thing which requires some skill. Fortunately you get the health bars, so you know what your chances are. Whereas in GOW3 you get no bar, and you can get him just by repeating L1+O all time long. In all of the phases! Man, the pwning strategy is supposed to change with each phase, to make it fun to find it out, don't they know that?

Been playing TLatD all morning so far, and so far I've done bugger all really. I'm now just doing all the activities with Clay, Terry, and Jim to get them out of the way so I don't have to do them later on. The only story missions I have open are Elizabeta, and Stubb's phone missions (which are ridiculously hard so far, cannot get that Infernus back where it belongs in time, I've scrutinized the map like crazy and I've only found one shortcut that works for me on the way there, and one on the way back? What's really pissing me off is I run out of time just round the corner every time ).

I see the stories intertwining nicely now.
    Spoiler:

The races are hard, I get in front then one mistake and everyone flies past you, but at least they're more fun than the main game. Only thing that gets me is the races in the main game were way too long, hence the fact in the end I never bothered with them. Wheras I think the bike races in TLotD are too short.

No idea. I haven't checked the multiplayer of it yet I've only started the single player.

I'm only up to level 5 (I think) so far and I had a few problems with the 9-Toes fight, but after I respawned I managed to kill one of his pets and I think the other must have fallen down the chasm because I couldn't see it at all. The game itself does look good, but the way the AI runs at you shooting is a bit naff. Although it does remind me of watching a mate play Fallout: New Vegas so maybe it's just me that doesn't like that style.

Haven't played it much today because I was determined to do the Halo Reach challenges. Took me most of the afternoon to do all 4 of them, but that's them done and I'm halfway to getting the weekly :D

Maybe soon I'll be able to buy the Gungnir helmet.

yeah i really liked the way they did all that.

yeah the heroin is like the diamonds so pops up now and again, so when you have a mission about heroin its the same heroin throughout the game, i guess its not as easy to spot as the diamonds though.

Well I imagine they'll pop up sooner or later? After all there's the mission with that Isaac geezer in the main game that Johnny popped up in as well? I imagine I can't be too far from the end now though so I'm going to try and do all the races, and kill the seagulls before I progress. I think I've done everything else now, I've done all the gang wars, stupid buddy activities, and played the all the mini games as well I think....well everything except bowling maybe?

Oh and I managed to do that stubbs mission, hardly had any time left, and I nearly shat my strides when it said "Park the car in the direction you found it in". I was like "AAAAAGH!!!! NO!!!!!! I'm gonna fail again!!! :o". But then it told me to leg it before the deputy mayor returned. My pants did not turn brown today :D I also managed to do the first race, I had to swallow my pride though and swap my Hexer for an NRG 900, the guys I didn't belt in the head with the bat were left behind in a cloud of my dust heh heh :D

Been playing Resident Evil 5 online again lately. Last night this Japanese guy and I got a 149 combo on Mercenaries Reunion, leading to a 500,000+ point bonus. By far the highest score I've ever got on that, by about 300K.

Have you seen Mercenaries on the 3DS? It looks quite good for a hand held game:

It does look good indeed. I remember near when they first announced it one of the "features" on the list was the ability to move and shoot at the same time. That will be interesting.

Glad to see they've got RE4 stuff in there aswell. Shame I'll probably never get the chance to play it :(

Weird just yesterday after watching the vid Daz posted up I was thinking to myself that instead of remaking 2 or 3 they should make a game that lumps the events of both games together somehow, since they both happened at the same time as each other. Dunno how they'd do it though every characters story would need to be totally different from each other.

Of course I have no idea from that vid if this is even anything like what I was thinking?

It's apparently a 3rd person shooter where you take the part of one of the U.S.S. (Umbrella's soldiers) as you try to clean up the mess of Resident Evil 2...more details here..

i'll prolly get that, resi 4 with achievments is all good.

not sure about operation racoon, it just looks like a straight shooter, i hope that isn't the way the franchise is going.

4 and 5 almost took it in that direction though.

Hopefully Operation Racoon City is just a spinoff, and given the subject matter I imagine it will be, cos' just like you I hope this isn't the direction the series will take. I remember the patter a while back about them re-inventing the genre, but I hope a straightforward bullet fest isn't going to be what they do as this is barely what you'd call a re-invention as much as a cop out.

If that's the case what next a resi FPS? The day that happens is the day when I drive to L.A. and suicide bomb Capcom USA HQ

Been playing Halo Reach again today and because one of the challenges is complete 15 multiplayer games I keep getting stuck with arseholes not playing properly. I gave up after 10 games and went onto Borderlands.

I've just got to New Haven before stopping. I've had a few problems on the way (Bone was the first, the mines were the second, Sledge(?) was the third and the vehicle fights are the last so far) but I'm still enjoying it.

I'm trying to get through the main story before I get Dynasty Warriors 7. After that it'll be Portal 2! Thankfully Duke has been pushed back again and then there's nothing until Arkham City in october and RE:Operation Raccoon City sometime around then aswell.

Going to be a good year for games :D

Noticed you were playing that earlier. That's a brilliant game. It's my replacement for the Soul Reaver games on this gen. It can be a bit picky with the buttons sometimes (one hidden thing where you've to fall, fly then grapple all in one was a pain) but it's one game I hardly ever had problems with bugs/quality control type things.

Shame Hennig left and went on to do Uncharted as PS3 only. I'd like to play that just for the story. But I ain't buying a PS3 just for that
