Who was making/porting Mr Do!

edited April 2011 in Games
Last year some time, in the Development or New Games Ideas forums, someone said that they were working on converting the ancient but still brilliant arcade game Mr Do! to the Spectrum, and I think they even posted up some Spectrum sprites, and I was wondering what became of this, but I can't find the thread (both 'Mr' and 'Do!' are too short for the search engine to handle ).

Does anyone remember the thread, and if you were the person doing the coding, then how is it going? Has there been any progress?

Wasn't it in limbo because there were problems with the screen sizing, or something like that?

No, you're right, the screen size was a problem that was mentioned, but I'm 99% sure he said he'd (theoretically) solved that problem, and would be getting around to working on the Spectrum port of Mr Do! in a month or so (from his posting date), as he was busy with another project first.

I'll have another look through the forums when I get a spare few minutes (it's hectic today ).

Well, if he coded as unrelentlessly as he writes posts, he could knock up a Knight Lore style game every 3 days. :-P

That's the one, thanks. I've pm'd ajmoss to ask him if he's made any progress on the game so far.

Yes, but how boring would a game be if it was written by me?

To win the game, you'd probably have to stay awake for three whole minutes. It's be harder than playing Cobra and Army Moves at the same time, whilst wearing boxing gloves and a blindfold, after having drunk tens pints of lager and whisky chasers. :p

Precisely, there's a long list of people who'll gladly do that for you (and do it better)...
I wanna tell you a story 'bout a woman I know...

even the c64 / atari version had that issue.. because of the re-sizing.. it made the game easier than the arcade..

I have gold digger by errm blabby which is 1x1 char game, which is ok.

I wonder if it would be possible to reduce the sprites.. so they are not standard "8" block pixels wide/tall.. e.g. do an odd number , maybe 12 or 14? that way you would get a bit more screen area? I mean masking is done in other games.. could it be possible to do a fill for the other 6 pixels that were missing?

I'm sure one of the more technically minded people will chip in about it and say it can't be done or would make add a lot of screen / raster time.

I've heard it's amazing. I've also heard that The Sentinel is superb on the BBC (better than the Spectrum version, some people say, so it must be fantastic), and also Revs and some arcade adventure who's name I can't recall (I think it begins with an E (not Evolution, or Equinox, but something like that), and you're using a jetpac and exploring a spaceship). I've always meant to spend some time with a BBC emulator, but never really got around to it.

Yes, I'm sure that's the one. I did hear that it also appeared on the Atari ST, but in my ST days I never saw the game sadly, though I didn't hear of the game at all until long after I'd consigned my ST to the wardrobe.

That's a great game (I bought it from you not too long after it was released) but it's only similar to Mr Do! (and definitely the best Mr Do! type game for the Spectrum, currently), not exactly like the old arcade game. I'm hoping for an exact port of Mr Do!, as it's my favourite arcade game, and it's not right that the Spectrum had such great arcade ports as Moon Cresta, Tapper, Spy Hunter, Green Beret, etc, but not Mr Do!

By the way, AJMoss still hasn't responded to my pm. According to his profile he's not posted since Februrary. Does anyone know why he's away from WOS?

I have to concede that the C64 version is excellent, as is Mr. EE! on the BBC.

I can feel the heat on the back of my neck while those smug trainspotting BBC owners, and bike-seat sniffing C64 owners are mocking 'Magic Meanies'.
