Working spectrum toaster or +3 wanted

edited April 2011 in Wanted
Just getting back into speccies after 22 years(!) and the +2 I bought isn't cutting it!

Doesn't necessarily need to be boxed, just nice working order with power supply/tv lead please. Will consider extras like joystick etc.

Happy to either pay cash or swap for my immaculate reconditioned Nintendo DS with brand new case/buttons, flash cart and 8 gig micro sd card which is running the excellent zxds emulator with an obscene number of spectrum games installed and ready to go.

I'm based in bristol.

thanks for looking...

Bought an untested +2a on a whim from ebay (8.50 plus shipping with loads of games) 3 weeks ago and not only found it came with classics like spy hunter and emlyn hughes international soccer but also worked fine after a clean and head adjustment. does crash occasionally which is annoying.

Thats an amstrad speccy compatibility issue with some games isn't it?.

I'm another that doesn't like the +2. I had a 48k rubber key Speccy and then moved on to the lovely 128k "toast rack", which remains my favourite model.

When Amstrad bought Sinclair and released the +2, I felt a bit betrayed (silly really), as it just looked like the CPC 464.

Also good time to get an +3,i seen alot of "broken" ones appearing on ebay, many which have a small drive problem.

It's a late model black 2+b (when they shifted production to Taiwan) and now I've thoroughly cleaned and adjusted tape heads it works really well and I've enjoyed using it.

The acquisition of a zip stick joystick also helped.

BUT... it's just not the model I used as a kid (standard 128+), so doesn't have maximum retro value for me.

Alternatively +3 would be good as I always fancied one and like the idea of booting up some old 3" discs.

Had planned on just putting it in the loft (because I haven't got enough stuff I don't use up there) but would also swap/part ex the 2+b.

Not sure - it happened twice. Once was mid-game in Mega Bucks in 48k mode (I'm sure someone will give me stick over that but I loved it back in the day) and once in Emlyn Hughes (although I did move the +2 which might have impacted it).

I don't dislike it - have had a blast playing it the last couple of weeks. It's just not original one I had as a kid so not the same. I know it's probably a bit weird as to all intents and purposes a 128+ and +2 would do exactly the same thing.

My mate had the 48k with rubber keys and 'beeper'. Many happy hours were spent on it.

Perhaps "dislike" is too harsh a word for me, but I much prefer the 48k/+/128k. I had a +2 a few years ago and it just didn't feel "right"!

It's funny you should mention the zipstick in your previous post - mine turned up in the post today, so I'm looking forward to some proper gaming with that (assuming it works!).

I know exactly what you mean. That's why I was looking for one now the bug seems to have bitten me.

I bought a 'broken' zip stick on ebay last week for ?1.20 plus postage knowing how easy they are to fix. Opened it up and someone has spilt fizzy drink on the buttons and they just needed removing and cleaning. About a minute and a cotton bud later and it's like I'm playing Manic Miner with a brand new joystick.

(although strictly speaking zip sticks were for me always something more associated with Amigas than Speccys).

Wow, that's a great bargain. I paid ?12.99 delivered for "ex-shop stock". I just hope it works but, as you say, they are repairable if not.

Agreed. That's why I was pretty sure it would be fine. How can something comprising

    - 6 really robust microswitches
    - wiring that can be easily re-soldered if detached
    - a near-bulletproof plastic case.

    be 'broken' beyond repair??

I prefered the zipstick to the comp pro ALL the way..

and if the zipstik was around earlier many of us wouldn't have trashed quikshot 2's on decathlon.. hehe

I'm pleased to report that the Zipstick works, and feels as responsive and robust as ever.

I played some cracking games of Bomb Jack last night on my 37" LCD, which my wife thought was highly amusing (in a "I can't believe my husband is such a geek" way).

My lady gives me a fair bit of stick too. yours is better trained than mine though if she allowed a 37' lcd into the house...

I'm another one that likes the same machine I used to have.

Firstly I bought a rubber key 48K about 4 years ago, much fun was had until it broke. I then got a Spectrum + from Macc, which also broke (my fault, not his!), I had those 2 repaired and was happy again for about a year. In the end I decided to get a +3, as that is what I had in the Spectrum days. I deliberately bought a broken one, as I was pretty sure it was just the disc drive belt, and it was. Now it is my main machine of choice that I use. In the event that a game won't load I fire up Macc's old Spectrum + (which is really reliable).

When I decided to get a VIC 20, I made great effort to make sure that it was the same version that I had as a boy, ie the Cost Reduced version, with the newer type of datasette unit. My retro computing is now well catered for, all I need now is some time. I have decided not to bother with an Amiga.

As for other halves thinking it's funny, my wife is pretty long suffering about it, thinks it's funny, and was amazed when I bought Retro Gamer 87 that there are enough people into it for a glossy magazine! She had a go on jumping jack once, and couldn't get my speccy back! She mostly sticks to her card making though.

My wife thinks im nuts! In my office/workshop (converted garage), when im in "repair mode" and if the kids get in she's there to hurriedly shoo them back into the house, well away from the sparks, smoke, chaos and swearing!

I envy you your converted garage. I've recently been shoved out of our lean to (now a utility room), into the shed at the bottom of the garden. It is better though, as I had to share the lean to, whereas the shed is all mine. I usually use the old computers in the comfort of the lounge though. Th eshed is more for repairs, making airfix kits, woodwork, metalwork etc.

Everyone should have a man cave! Be it an old garage, garden shed or a hole in the ground, just somewhere where we can get on with what interests us for an hour or two, makes me a happier person and with that, people around me. God only knows what I would be like if i was just moping round the house all night with nothing to do, not much into telly so I'd probably end up doing DIY or something equally as dreadful!

To the topic, +3 here, pricey, not mine and because it comes on, works and he has disks, he DOESNT know if the drive works or not!

Reminds me of having to send my own drive off for repair, done the belt change and clean up,replaced a pin that was missing, but alas it still doesn't boot any games.

I got a +3 for free, well not really.. but near as..

other side of London and I took the train and also visited someone not so far away who I used to buy tapes from.

the buyer in that case was pick up only.. so took it back .. drive is knackered.. he refunds me the ?6 final price for it for it.. even though I didn't hint at it as he saw I was someone who valued the machines. still not fixed it

and well the sound mess up with the +3 is the big down side for me.

I think that was only equalled by getting a speccy+ & pentagram and some other games for ?5 locally , the games alone excluding pentagram were worth ?10.
