The bloke who writes all the Llamasoft games, Jeff Minter, famously doesn't like Manic Miner, as he wrote a (stupid) article ripping it apart. Personally I'd say that MM is far better than anything JM ever wrote, though admittedly I've not played many of his games. All of the ones I have played though*, have been simplistic games with none of the thought (or genius) of Manic Miner.
Then again, he doesn't post in these forums, so he doesn't really count.
* I've played three that I know of, all on the Atari ST. One was a rip off of Robotron, can't remember what it was called, but there was a 512K and a 1MB version with more sound samples, one was a side scroller game with a camel, and one was a sort of grid based shooter. The only one I liked was the Robotron rip off, but come on, how hard is it to write a rip off of a simple arcade game? All three of them were very simplistic games. I'm not saying they were badly programmed (I don't know if they were or not, and I don't remember any bugs), but MM contained much more throughtful game design if you ask me.

The third one! By Atari! The four player one! And as I said it can be either the home computer version or the arcade version.
I don't like any of them. :D (only kidding - The Atari Gauntlet was an all-time favourite for me). Again it was better in two-player mode. Also liked "The Deeper Dungeons" too.

I don't mind Gauntlet. Not a fave really by any means, but I do definately like it. What about Chase HQ? Or Robocop?
Chase H.Q. I like, and I also really like Robocop, no matter that it's soo easy that I can do it while asleep, but there's at least one person here who will say they hate it! :p

Fair enough!
But no-one has said they don't like Gauntlet yet! :D
Things on my mind, I'm hardly at my best.
Yes, I did like that. Even though it was easier to beat on level seven (the hardest) than on level three.
I didn't even know there were any of his games on the Spectrum. The game you mention is here:
http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseekid.cgi?id=0003140
and this search shows all of his stuff (either by him or for him)

There's a game listed there called Grid Runner, which sounds like the one I meant on the ST.
Which one?

:D
The other two you mentioned sound like Llamatron and Attack of the Mutant Camels.
Although not exactly an original concept, Llamatron 1MB was really fun in two-player mode. :)
You pedantic sod! :D

I prefer Underwurlde.
Yes, ok, but you like Starquake, right?
Come on, peeps... we can do this!
I love both of those games.
I'm still waiting on someone to say they don't like/hate Gauntlet! :D
Poop ;)
+1 for Starquake though.
You're kidding??? Really?
And Starquake was knocked out just moments ago too, so we are quite literally back to square one!
It was proverbial spanner time! Guantlet's alright :)
You utter bast!
Gauntlet's back on the table peeps!
But apart from that you loved it right? :)
Its ****e!
Boring?? You must be doing it wrong...

How about trying for a racing game, Sega Rally maybe?
