I haven't yet met anyone who actively dislikes Black Books. Anyone care to expand my horizons by saying they thought it was crud?

    EDIT: What a dull 500th post ;)

i honestly want to like black books, but i just don't like it. :-(

Curb Your Enthusiasm? Arrested Development? I don't find them predictable at all.

Quite agree. I'm wondering if Dr Beep has seen any American comedies post 1995 ;-) The 80/90's stuff like Married With Children, Alf, Different Strokes etc, was VERY predictable. Those two you mention and those I did most certainly are not.

    From 1994 to 2004.
    And not funny!

Luckily others like it, I just don't. Any other american comedy i picked up while zapping, exactly the same.... not funny!

English comedies however , mostly briljant!

I 100% agree with you about Friends, at the time and even now I've never understood the love for it. Thinking about it, I'm not particularly enamoured to any yank comedy that has canned laughter/live studio audience.

As long as they're not made by ITV - there was a general consensus a few years ago that ITV had never made a decent comedy other than Rising Damp. Anyone know if that still stands?

    no Fast Show lovers here?
  • edited April 2011
Was never keen on the Fast Show

Now the Office (UK) i loved and it was great in a way they finished it after only two seasons (and one Xmas special) as it could have faded away. Saying that the american one has gone from strength to strength

When it was out i thought most people liked the Office as it was so brand new back then and funny, but now its 'cool' to moan about Gervais for some reason so there'll be some haters sadly

I think Gervais' performance in The Office is peerless, it really is one of the greatest comedy performances of all time. Extras was decent but nothing special. Since he's gone to Hollywood every time I've seen him interviewed he's come across as a big-headed twat. I thought his attitude at the Emmy's was reprehensible and he was lucky that someone didn't knock him out. It's as if he's deliberately turning himself into Alan Partridge.

The first series of Extras i found dull but the second one (Where hes outside the studio more) was very funny.

Dont blame Gervais for being cocky, think it makes a nice change from the usual lines you get from other stars.

Thought he was brilliant at the Emmys, most of the jokes he told he did say to the celeb before hand what it was (well thats what i read). I never watch the Emmys but with him as presenter it was superb, not surprised they had asked him to come back as ratings seemed to be higher with him as the presenter. Wayyyyy better than the usual crappy mainstream presenters.

    that's my fave one! :)

Nope sorry, it was awful. Fot a start they made Baldrick sensible, and it wasn't even funny. I remember watching it and it was a crushing disappoitment. The best ones was series 2-4 (especially 4).

    Episodes was funny in parts.

Chance in a Million was good.

Just Good Friends has some of the best one liners ever.

I only rate series 2 of Blackadder. Series 3 & 4 were too formulaic for my liking.

I don't like 'Friends' either, those stupid people making stupid jokes in a sofa all time (a sofa in a cafe???)...

    Friends is bad.
    also
I don't like any American sit-com that ends with a "moral tale". It's so sad.

And what about 'The Benny Hill Show?' :p

Must admit i thought Friends was really good. Didnt jump onto the bandwagon but a few mates did, gave it a go and i didnt want to like it but it was very clever with a ton of very good jokes.

As for 'those stupid people making stupid jokes in a sofa all time (a sofa in a cafe???)... ' - dont give up your dayjob and become a tv series reviewer !

Theres a bit more to the show than that

I like The Young Ones,Faulty Towers,Blackadder,The Two Ronnies and Monty Pythons Flying Circus although its a little odd and dry at times.
Despite loving The Simpsons i do mostly prefer british comedy and quite like a lot of Jimmy Perry and David Croft`s work like it aint half hot mum,you rang me lord, are you being serverd?,Allo-Allo,Dads Army, etc

PS. The only person less funnier than Ricky Gervais is Victoria Wood..(shudder!),i don`t do people that laugh at their own jokes.

What was the name of that early-to-mid 80s show with the neighbours where one family was poor(ish) and the ones next door were better off, they also had a kid with large glasses who was always visiting the poorer family (iIrc).

Anyway ... that was a funny show.

(Come to think of it maybe it was very late 70s and start of 80s)

Not keen on most stand-up comedians then? :p

I think Billy Connolly is the worst culprit for laughing at his own jokes. Sometimes he's laughing at himself for so long you wonder whether he's gonna remember to tell the rest of the joke or not.

You honestly dont laugh one bit when you watch any episodes of the Office?

I'm not normally bothered how they act in 'real life', i'm sure Gervais is bigheaded but i always think fair play to him for getting where he is. I'm just not a fan of Billy Connolly because of the infamous Ken Bigley joke, yeah comedians tell a lot of sick jokes but when the guy was still alive and held hostage i thought that joke was poor and because of that i wont watch any of Billy Connolys stuff. (Again its a tricky one, not saying jokes are 'okay' a week after someones died etc)
