Idea for site - High Score Challenge
Hi all
An idea for the site..
CPC Zone (cpczone.emuunlim.com) has run a sucessful High Score Challenge for the past 12 weeks..
The organiser choose the first game and the subscribers of teh board on it would play the game, get a high score, get a picture of the screenshot using the Printscreen button or related feature in the emulator, post it online and at the end of two weeks, the winner would be announced and the winner would choose the next game.
So, if there are more Speccy players on th enet than CPC users, why not do something simular for this site. If the powers that be like the idea, they could setup a section on the forum for it and I can sort out rules and that and set the ball rolling..
What does everyone else think?
PS: Someone did try to cheat by doctoring his screenshot on one game, but was caught out.

It was just an idea.. my apologies for wasting peoples time
The thing that I could imagine irritates some people about Speccy tour is that you're stuck with abiding by special rules, using 'official' snapshots and faffing about with RZX using only certain emulators.
Maybe some people just want a laid back quick blast without all the rules and regs of Speccy Tour?
Do these boards support piccys and would people want to see piccys on the boards? I s'pose if it's sectioned off then it's a case of don't go there unless you wanna see.
I'm not saying it's for me as I don't get much time to play games much anyway but I could see the appeal where others are concerned.
Can you tell me how many people cheated but weren't caught?
The author of one of the games noticed a shot from one person had been altered..
Come on grass them up ! Its a sad day when people have to resort to cheating on a Spectrum games competition, very poor
cpc4eva or, as he's known on the WOS forums, biolaboy.
It was a CPC games competition rather than a Speccy one. It got spotted instantly as blatant cheating (without all that RZX security business) and he ended up looking rather silly.
I'd be up for a Speccy tournament along the same lines, it's certainly less hassle than the Speccy Tour and has the big advantage that if the game sucks (or you suck at the game!) you only need wait a couple of weeks for a new challenge.
Then that explains why he was asking me (and probably others) via PM to find cheats for CPC games.
Lol! Yes indeed. :)

My highscore for Space Harrier was over 6.1 million points and my score for IK+ is 270,000 and both achieved without cheating..
You have named me as being a cheater in the cpc high score challenge and you know that is not true and you must state this to the persons who have been reading this thread.
You failed to inform the users in here the purpose of why I posted a cheated high score in the challenge.
a funny thing about the truth most people only hear one side of it.
as Arjun once posted......
Remember this old Confucious saying:
"When the wise man points at the moon, the idiot looks at the finger."
Before an apology can be granted, you'd need to provide proof. A URL to the thread in question and the reasons behind it would be good.
Your previous behaviour on this board indicates that you're less than honest - let's see you provide the proof which exhonerates your cheatingbastness.
D.
If it hadn't been for AndyC naming you, your name would have been left out of this.
Although I did not name you as a cheat, if it offended you, I deeply apologize for my mis-phrased comments leading to your naming. I did not name anyone but you should also demand apologies from AndyC for actually naming you and Woody and Arjun for making snide comments.
I move for the WOS mods to erase this thread at once..
Well so that we dont hear just 'one side' of it explain your case then.
Why did you post a cheated high score and why were you apparently at the same time asking others for cheats ?
Come on tell all !
And Zeropolis, "I move for the WOS mods to erase this thread at once..". Come on calm down ! Everyones getting so uptight about this its so over the top
If Biolaboy didnt cheat then fair enough, however it seems he was asking someone for a particular cheat, hes said he did cheat but that was for another reason (looking forward to knowing what that is) so whats the problem?
Hes not going to sue you or anything ! All talk about 'erasing this thread at once' is totally OTT

After reading that thread he was cheating and was caught.
I love the way after he was caught he was trying to make out he did it on purpose to find 'loopholes' etc in the competition ! Remind me if i get caught for shoplifting that i can say 'i was only seeing if I would be caught, it was an experiement'. Oh please.
No one will take his other high scores he got (Space Harrier) seriously after that.
And Biolaboy seriously expected an apology from Zeropolis ??? (Cant believe he did though)
It was a challenge Biolaboy not a 'lets see if you can cheat'. You can cheat in many games, once someone does the trust is gone and theres just no point doing high score challenges.
Poor effort cheating in some games competition. How sad is that
I also read your stupid thread on that site Biolaboy about Amstrad vs Spectrum. Many of the Amstrad posters there were sensible and said 'each to their own' or 'for many of us its the machine we had when we were young we liked best whatever'.
Seeing zeropolis79 bottling it as soon as Biolaboy came back to this thread was amusing though

Well, as you can all no doubt see, it was a brave and selfless experiment on biolaboy's part. A cunning and thoroughly well-researched attempt to BUST the REAL CHEATS who plague the high score thread. Honest.
@Zeropolis - frankly you should be ashamed of yourself, as should anyone who doubted our esteemed friend. I'd certainly trust any score he submitted in a Speccy high score thread.
Oh. I'm sorry, I seem to have gone completely mad. :D
So, why did you do it? To prove that it was possible? I don't think that was news to anyone.
No no i know what i'll do. I'll cheat at a game and then pretend I got the highest score. If they do catch me i'll just say it was just a test thats all and i wasnt cheating at all.
Jesus some people have the saddest lives in the world. I cant wait to get stopped by the police for speeding. When they stop me i'll simply say "Well done officer, i was just seeing if you were doing your job and if i would get caught or not. Well done, now let me go on my way please"
Wot? Me? Snide? :D
Frankly, I don't see any reason why you should be apologising. There was nothing in your post that implicated biolaboy. And cheating is cheating (a rose by any other name...) - you certainly aren't the one to be apologising!

Oh yes, Arjun and myself just can't help ourselves when it comes to making snide comments. It's like an obsession on the WoS forums.
But not so far in this thread :p
 Excellently put!
As this was a relatively small game and used the common methods to control the lives it was the perfect game to teach somebody the basics of hacking.
I ended up with a large tutorial teaching him step by step how to achieve this. By the end he was sending me some of his own pokes for the game so progress was being made and he was putting a considerable amount of effort into understanding the workings of the game bouncing plenty of questions off me en route.
I could post the tutorial I whacked up here but at 100 lines I would be just wasting space.
He *knew* the location where the lives were stored.
He *knew* how to manipulate the number.
He *knew* therefore how to end the game *even* when cheating.
He could have posted a screenshot showing ony 1 life easily but DIDN'T.
He could have posted a screenshot of the end screen showing only his high score but DIDN'T.
I didn't read the thread before now but knowing what I know... yes, there is no doubt he was cheating, but there is also no doubt IMO that he was cheating for his reasons stated with no malice intended. I don't necessarily agree with doing that or see the need to do it but that's the choice he made.
After just a few days I could see he was starting to fathom how things were working. If you look earlier in the thread you can see how he was experimenting with what he was learning... making the ships change colours... I didn't show him any of that... these were the sorts of things he was sending me!
If you look at the screenshot too...
Said tongue in cheek me thinks?
I'd definitely agree up to there.
And I might even possibly agree with that.
However, that I can't agree with at all. If you want to play silly buggers like he was, you agree it with the organisers before doing it. Doing anything else is (at best) highly irresponsible, and probably much worse than that.
I still don't see what point he was trying to prove. Personally, it looks to me like he was on an ego trip.
Firstly most of the games in the highscore challenge have pokes already built into them - but you didnt know that.
Like i said in an earlier post uve only heard one side of the story.....

Have a look at this link. You will see that from the very first suggestions of the high score challenge I was pointing out that it was far too easy to post cheated scores and no one would know and I also pointed out flaws in the high score challenge eg: Gryzor. You'll see my post regarding this flaw on page 3 of the link.
Fact: Yes I did post a score with cheats on Space Invaders. I admitted it and I did it for the right purpose not for evil as you guys think.
As Mr Bad beard mentioned Yes i was being toungue in cheek by saying I was in the "twighlight zone". If you look at the previous high score by executioner he said he was in the zone and he jumped from 19000 to 35000 in the space of a morning and if anyone has played the game youll find it hard to believe. Its one hell of a hard game.

Ive been a fan of the high score challenge but sceptical of how it would be possible to be 100% transparent.
The whole thing is based on Trust and honour - yet how would moderators and members know if someone posted a cheat high score????? just how would they know ???
it is far tooo easy to cheat and there are far tooo many ways to cheat.
Furthermore The high score challenge inital rules didnt mention anything about the use of snapshots and in the Target Renegade challenge I highlighted the use of snapshots that it was a form of cheating and as a result the rules were changed.
Isnt it strange that the person who wrote Space Invaders also got the high score and had a massive jump from previous score ???? Like i said im very sceptical and I asked mr bad beard for pokes to Space Invaders to highlight how would anyone know if someone had cheated ???? I deliberately posted a screen shot of the game still being played and not of the high score table itself.
Quote"If I ended the game and had the score in the highscore table like the rest of the posts would u all have felt the same way ??? hmmmmm i wonder ???"
http://cpczone.emuunlim.com/boards/index.php?showtopic=649&st=30
if you look at page 3 of the above link the section where I posted the cheat screen shot ull see that again a rule change was suggested and that i seconded it but stated "but thats not going to stop any1 from cheating .... you can still cheat and get your score in the high score table...."
and now executioner is working on a feature for his cpc emulator which is similar to wat you speccy guys have at recording games and being able to replay it.
Have a think of this - I had the pokes for Space Invaders, so I KNEW 5F1E (1st player lives) and 5F1F (2nd player lives) were the locations where lives were stored. If I was DELIBERATELY cheating then I could have EASILY poked a '2' into 5F1E so that when you next got killed only 1 life would show. That would show you were down to your last life and really struggling! But I DIDNT do this as I was SHOWING them how cheats could mess up the challenge. ie. I was waiting for them to CATCH me...
I could also have poked a '1' into 5F1E so that the next time I got killed it would be 'Game Over'. Then my high score would be on the menu screen and nobody would have known a thing......
As for other matters...
Fact: Yes i did ask many people such as woody et al to help me find pokes and teach me and i also did that on cpc zone but only Mr bad beard offered.
Why?: Initally it was pokes for Footballer of the year and Football Manager 2. I played these games at length in my youth and there have never been any pokes for them. Frankly I am jealous of your guys tipshop - its just fantastic but nothing like it exists on cpc. So i have asked mr bad beard to find pokes and then i post them at cpc zone and give full credit to him. There are so many cpc games without pokes and it seems like every speccy game has a cheat or poke. Now thanks to Mr bad beard the cpc users have the pokes they need to complete the games they love but werent able to before.
I havnt asked for pokes to games in the high score challenge - except for Space Invaders to get the point across that there are many loopholes in the high score challenge and its far tooo easy to cheat.
So there you go theres my side - ive been pointing out the loopholes and flaws in the rules of the challenge throughout....
so Zeropolis care to explain to all of us how you got a million more points than ERV's high score on space harrier when you only posted one score yet all the other members who submitted showed their constant progress and played the game for days and days to get it and you already claimed yourself as the winner with four days to run in the challenge (yes just ask MaskedMan there were 4 days left) and selected the next game ???
Do you honestly believe that people weren't aware of that? Given that it's incredibly obvious to everyone around here, that leads to two possible conclusions:
1) it's also incredibly obvious to CPC owners.
2) CPC owners are much more stupid than Speccy owners :)
Which one do you think it is?
