I live less than two miles from where it all happened. The police helicopter was up pretty much all night.
The London based media seem to be slow to pick up on this, but believe me this was a MAJOR incident!
My Make-a-Chip collection is safe however, so please don't worry about me :)

just seen it on the sky news channel.

    some facts that stuck out

    8 police injured
160 police in full riot gear sent to arrest 4 people
    300 people gathered to protest
    8 arrests

seems a bit strange tbh, that many police for that few people, and that small amount of arrests for so many protestors that WAS a riot situation.

apparently the police moved in to arrest because they had information the neighboring tesco store was going to be petrol bombed (anybody know why it would be targetted?)

apparently in the end it WAS set a light lol, so the police action was a success YAAAY!!

Managed to miss it all, was having a few beers in Bristol last night but was in the centre. Saw the choppers though.

There's been some street protests against building the new tesco down there over the last year or so, it's in a an area with a lot of local shops around there and some people in the community weren't happy about it.

Anyway, the Tesco got built in the end.

I've seen a house raid round there before, they were dragging someone out in handcuffs but don't know what it was about.

next you'll be using us as an alibi ;)

why they bother? I mean they weren't paying rent..the land owner wanted them out ,tesco is renting the land probably.. so they should be attacking the owner.. what if an Oxfam opened there.. would they attack that ? ffs

most of them have hair like a birds nest, so flick a match at em. not like they want to pay anything back to society.

still makes a change for em coming to London on a jolly.

half of the "protesters" only were there for 2 reasons.. a good punch up OR to loot / rob.

the whole local shop thing, well people should buy in said shops and support them if they want to keep them.

seems to be happening more and more tho?
do you think people are slowly waking up and getting fed up of being shafted day in and day out by politicians, bankers and big business?

how many of them protesting never worked but quite happily get free rent / dole ? if they are doing that.. it's kinda hypocritical and pot calling the kettle black.

Not detracting from those who are protesting for the actual cause, but rent-a-mob like to join in for any reason just for a punch up. So the thing was against the squatters getting evicted ? against tesco ? against the police ? .. if it was against the first 2, why trash a police car.. (guess whose pocket that comes out of )

all that happens is tax is wasted clearing up what they have trashed.. so in fact they are causing MORE cuts.

it was about tesco destroying the community............police cars are always a target when a protest turns into a riot situation, they become your enemy not your friend

and not about a few crusties who got evicted by the land owner? (who tesco probably lease off)

to put it in context.. I live in 2 places.. in London and outside.

outside of London , the nearest shops are hhm 15 minute walk where a massive tesco is 3 minutes walk away. the local shops are impossible to find things other than the essentials.

inside of London.. crud shops.. too many chicken takeways / estate agent / hairdressers / pound shops / off licence. there is a few corner shops that charge double what tesco or the iceland do, because they can't compete 5 minutes walk away. I went to buy a reem of printer paper the other week as I ran out.. local shops ?3.99... tesco ?2.50...

shops sell what folk want or don't... and out of london I really noticed that.

i think what the protest about in bristol is that local area has loads of local shops, and a tesco would undecut them all and slowly but surely kill them all off. i can see where theyre coming from as theres places like that in sheff where i lived (local asian shop, veggie shops, butchers, bakers, post office, sandwich shops etc etc)
also i think even tho they had a LOT of opposition the supermarket and council stuck together and passed it anyway sodding the community int he process which i think is the worst bit

supermarkets and there little schemes are pretty bad.

isn't it asda who buy up huge plots of land, keep them undeveloped just so the other stores can't build on them.

    Don't shop there then

I think half the small business owners who complain about all TESCO's evil tactics and big corporate muscle are just jealous that they didn't think of them, or invest their profits into expansion.
