I could have knocked up that screen in 15 minutes, videoed it and got my son to put it on his Youtube page.

I love it how you can do all the hard stuff, and then ask your kid to do the most simple task! :D

Contra became Probotector on the Nintendo

The Japanese and US releases on the NES were still called Contra, as far as I know... they're only called Probotector in Europe. That's how I seem to remember it anyway, I could be completely wrong...

Finisher what are you hoping to gain from all this?

Lemon64 provides entries for both Contra and Gryzor and besides from the loading screen (Contra's looks better), both look identical.

that contra's screen is probably a hacked copy, reason why.. the way the screen is composed and a scan / digitized (hence the 4 colours).. compare it to the US and UK c64 version of Yie Ar Kung Fu. Ocean would have just changed the text and NTSC fixed it (like they did with other titles including yie ar)

I do know that a US version of the C64 Gryzor, called Contra exists, but whether a disk/tape image exists online is questionable.

As for the cultpower magazine, it reads a little more than that. This is where somebody translated that thing for me a few years ago.
Here is a short translation with all the facts.

    At first (Basics):
    - Gryzor was pretty great on the CPC, thanks to the great controls, graphics and gameplay
    - its now out for MS-DOS and C64
    - then they explain the story and the gameplay
    - you cannot play the C64 Version with just a joystick, as you have to push space to jump
    - you need a CGA Graphics Adaptor for the PC Version
    - you can play the PC Version with an analog joystick or the keyboard
    - it's easier to play with a joystick than with the keyboard
    - you cannot use the digital joystick-port which you can find at Schneider-PCs
    - tempo and speed is good with an 8 Mhz PC like the Schneider PC 1512
    - if you play it on an AT the speed is very great
    - it's even faster than on the C64

in the Box (the personal stuff):
    - Heinrich says: On a Schneider it "gryzors" best
    - Both ports cannot keep up to the CPC Version
    - The C64 Version is too hard, the controls suck
    - The MS-DOS Version is technically good (though CGA Graphics are not)
    - but it still cannot keep up with the CPC
    - you should only play it with an analog joystick..
    - .. as the keyboard controls are a pain
    - you can recommend it, but only because there are hardly any good PC Action Games.

First Box: C64 Version Rating, Graphics, Sound and their general "Power-Rating"
    Second Box: PC-Version Rating.

Also, Scottie uk, I'm not in this to "gain" anything. This is the off-topic section, and I was hoping to get others' interest (without harm, of course, which didn't go too well), in the same way that I was pretty excited to have come across this release.

Well.. don't let the natural skepticism put you off there finisher... If you have the goods, then you know you'll be the one left smiling in the end.. Personally, I don't see why the discovery of such a thing should be considered so implausible... Sounds like it was common enough practice (renaming games) in the day... Perhaps the best approach is for everyone to simply reserve judgement and be patient enough to allow you to come up with the goods... We look forward to seeing the download link.. :)

    Thank you, kgmcneil :)

The last time I've been to this forums, it was a few months ago. I've been here since 2007 and it was so much different beforehand... I just hope it isn't for the worse ;)

Martijn is slightly bemused why this would be considered a problem?

ZnorXman did not want to besmirch WoS's good name in allowing a link to a potentially illegal/denienced game, and wanted Martijn to make the call whether this link ought to be allowed or not.

The Widewebs is international waters-err-territory-err-cyberspace where everyone is a monarch who is grammatically allowed to refer to themselves in the third-person.

ZnorXman considers himself to be Monarch of the Left Cushion (but he chooses to traverse across the Middle Cushion to leave his farts in the Right Cushion)

Just quickly reading through this topic and I don't get it - what's the big deal about discovering an old DOS version of a medicore arcade game?
  • edited May 2011
It's the fact that a previously unknown version of a game has been found..

personally, I would say it's official , cruddy CGA (4 colours) unless there is an option for ega. I had an 8088 pc , with 20MB hard drive.. so remember the amazing cga games ;) ( I only bought it as cobol at my college was crud and working on a pc was far quicker)

banana ported it for ocean, IRC they did other games like errm arkanoid rings a bell for some reason. Or maybe it was robocop.. I do recall that coming out as CGA and 5.25 disk also

c64 version is better IMHO.. not played it thru as the keyboard options for movement are bad

That's subjective. It's a matter of taste. You find this game mediocre, I find it awesome.

So what is the difference? Just the title screen?

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion mate.. For every Gryzor lover, there is a Saber Wolf hater..

I'm kinda with Refrenz on this one, not on the quality of the game (I neither like nor dislike it), but not really understanding all the fuss over a game - for a non-speccy system.

You are an incredibly rude person with your posts. You should really stop and think about what you wanna say before typing it all down.
