Hutch the Rabbit

edited May 2011 in Announcements
I'm currently working on the graphics for a game that will hopefully be available for the iPhone/iPad or something. Still in it's very early stages, here is the main character, Hutch the Rabbit, and a test animation. As, I said, it's being done in a retro style with a limited colour palette.....but I created the character and animated him in SevenUp. I actually really like the animation 'tools' available in it and the easy way you can flick between frames just like if I was doing each frame on paper. Really, I would love to have a Spectrum version of the game.

Isometric style? I do not have iPhone and not want to own one (happy with my Ericsson Xperia), but it looks very good. Would like to see a Spectrum version of it.

walking animation is very smooth and character looks good. But I wonder, movement (or shape) of the ear could be improved? Generallly, rabbits have pointy ears.

I was just thinking the same. Nice animation, but more than a rabbit, the character rather looks like a spermatozoon with a face and a small body to me ;)

Hey, thanks for all your comments. The game itself is still in it's early stages but progressing well. I'm going to colour the walking sprite then it's on to the jumping animations followed by climbing animations and tweens for walking/jumping/climbing. Then I'll see whether any more is needed.

Ah, now the ears  I've already had this..."discussion"...in another Pixel art forum. Their edits turned my character into a standard westernised bland rabbit!...after some of them had to be told what it actually was! And anyone else mentions stuff that aren't, like, anatomically correct and stuff for a cartoon character is getting a punch in the chuff :p

The thing is, it's been commented on by a couple of the ex-Ocean graphics people, and they knew what it was and loved it (yaaaay!) and the real litmus test came yesterday when I showed the character design and animation to my 4 and a half year old son. "Oh, I like that!", then immediately walked out the room. "WHAT DO YOU THINK IT IS??!?", I shouted to him. "A RABBIT!", was his reply. Job done, design nailed down

Hey, and anyway, lop-eared rabbits have rounded floppy ears and with a little bit of artistic licence.....

Anyway, I'll post up more artwork/animation when they are done.

I'm fine with the ears. If a rabbit walks like a human, and has a head as big as the other parts of his body, why not round ears too?

I did think the comment about the ears was a bit pointless, and even prepared a facetious reply about requiring a 'hopping' gait rather than the casual ambulation depicted.

But it looks like a cuddly toy version of a rabbit, which is no bad thing. Personally I want a pet rabbit with stars for ears like the ones in Mario Galaxy.
