Ok... so I'm not totally against the idea of a live action version... but....
Keanu as Kaneda? Seriously?

I first heard about this last year. I'm never going to watch it.

No matter what, it's going to be utter pish. Doesn't matter who's in it.
Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.

Oh I don't know... if someone like Kinji Fukasaku had a go at it, it would be worth a look... But he's dead so that ain't gonna happen... but a USA version? Where will it be set? Neo-LA?

    Gonna have nightmares over this...

The only good thing about that is Stephen Norrington writing it. He did the fantastic Death Machine. Although that might just be fantastic because of Brad Dourif. I only liked the original film with Brandon Lee, the next 2 sucked major balls. And the lesss said about the tv series the better.

I still want to see what Rob Zombie would have done with it. That might have turned out ok.

Sure, a Japanese version might not be that bad, but turning any anime into a live action film is a bad idea. Of course, the US version will be totally Americanised - dumbed down and completely different story. The Japanese version would stay more true to the manga/anime but it'll be nothing like the original.

Speaking of this, is it a remake of the anime or is it a new US film based on the manga?

    WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!
Forget that Keanu is being tipped for the role of kaneda, a live action version will not only suffer from modern re-make syndrome, but also from the fact that live action remakes and American remakes of Japanese films suck!
    Rant over

This has wrong written all over it.......at least The Crow remake has the writer of the comic on board again...

    ...but Keanu....as Kaneda?????

One thing I should've mentioned earlier, I can't even watch the dubbed version of Akira. Japanese or nothing. I mean, wtf is with the pronouncing of Kaneda. The Japs do it like CanEDa, the US is CanAYda. Just doesn't sound right at all.

I doubt he's got anything to do with the film other than a "based on" type of credit. Although if he does write it then it'd possibly be quite good.

Let me clean the vomit off my monitor, and take off my pants since I've just sh*t myself on purpose

How can you have a live action Akira? How can you have a live action Akira with Keanu as Kaneda. Did Hollywood not learn it's lesson from casting him as Klaatu?

    What a bunch of morons!!!!

It'll be a big pile of septic rotten dog spunk!!!!!111111eleventyone!!!!!111!!!!!!!!

It wouldn't surprise me if an American remake of Battle Royale was biend worked on. WHY CAN'T THEY LEAVE SUCH THINGS ALONE???

You know it's already half done, probably got Megan Fox, Shia Lebeouf, and Jackie Chan in it.

I hope that NEVER gets Hollywood-ised! I love Battle Royale. It just wouldn't work. What is it with Hollywood taking all these Japanese films and remaking them, things like the Ring etc. I wonder of they'd ever remake 'Audition' or 'Visitor Q'?

The answer to both questions is: 'no'
Why do you ask? Is there some dodgy reason for this?

It's what the naration on the start of Visitor Q says, it's one of the only bits of the film that really stuck in my head. It says it just before the first time Visitor Q actually belts the dad with a brick.

I also remember the mother filling the kitchen floor with breast milk and her son rolling around in it, and the dad shagging a dead woman who poo's on him while he's doing it.....very bizarre film indeed

Isn't Keanu Reeves 50 by now? how on earth can he do the charecter of a teen?(or at least a young adult) first he's going for a new bill & Ted, now a teen charecter... is he having a late midlife crisis? WOAW

as for the Crow, it just seems stupid the first one was cool but was a product of the 90's with all that gothic pre-grunge/grunge vibe in to it... something that by now is long gone...
you'll probably turn it in to a Emu film or something like that... and Bradley Cooper is just a polished version of Shia Lebeuf: Hollywood tries to convince you they are star material, but you just cant see the charisma coming out of them...

i liked transformers, it was actioned filled and funny in places, perfect mix.

still i guess keanu shouldn't play akira, he's pretty old, they need some young blood in there. i mean the guy is supposed to be in a teenage bike gang, so maybe some one edgy like leonardo dicaprio. lots of other roles too like his bird could be katy perry?
and maybe danny devito for the mayor?

im just throwing ideas around here, im sure hollywood will make something good.

Think you've answered your own question. They remake them because they're not American, they have people speaking in a foreign language (therefore no commercial appeal) and I think The Simpsons had their finger on the button here Hollywood doesn't like subtitled films because 'people want to watch a movie... not read!'

Transformers was good, although I do dislike Shia LaBeouf! Haven't seen the 2nd one, but I've heard it's a great big pile of poop....

Yeah the second one wasn't as good as the first one, i wouldn't say it was pile of poop though.

Looking forward to Crow and Akira, but I imagine they won't be much cop. Howevers, I wasn't that keen on the first Crow movie, but I liked the sequel and the previous remake.

Transformers was daft. Too much like the cartoon and not enough like the comic or toys.

The talk of mutant super robo death children from the Eurovision and currently listening to threads made me think of the little kids from Akira, whilst failng miserably to find a short clip of Takashi screaming and taking out all the building's in the vacinity of him (with his mind) I accidentally stumbled upon this clip.

    I think it's about 95% accurate too :D
