At the time of playing it, A Link to the Past, was my favourite game ever. I can still remember the first time I went into the other world; and the times when you could look down on a distant landscape from miles above. Just amazing for back then.
Years later I got Ocarina of Time on N64 and I just never got into it at all. The fact that the much-lauded day-night cycle meant that night turned into day (and vice-versa) in about half an hour, just made the whole thing feel silly.
I've always liked OOT. I never completed any of the others. I got close to completing Majors Mask but couldn't get the last 4 or 5 mask's needed to beat the end guy and I got fed up with having to beat all the bosses again at the end of Wind Waker (I think that's a design cop out). Acctually, I completed Twilight Princess on the Wii, but I found that game to be a little "light weight" compared to OOT. I still enjoyed it, but the just seemed to be something missing?
I feel the need to give a special shout out to Minish Cap on the GBA. That was a great little game and I greatly enjoyed that one. Again, I never completed it, mainly because I put it down for a while, then forgot where I was and what I needed to do etc (a common thing with me). It's well worth tracking down and playing ;-)
I really liked Link to the Past but there was a lot of going back and forth and at one place I got stuck so badly that I had no idea what I had to do or where to go and gave up at that point. Something to do with sands or something... can't remember.
A similar thing happened to me with Ocarina of Time. Great game with a beautifully realized world. But having got stuck in the Forest Temple, multiple times, I simply lost patience and gave up.
Had a fantastic time with Twilight Princess but I'm yet to finish it. Great game but am not sure if it's as deep as OoT.
The thing with all of them is you get used to the hints and things nudging you in the right direction, and the game walling off the parts of the game that are beyond your abilities at the time.
But then you occasionally come across something ambiguous. Some barrier that the game has hinted that you should be able to get around (when really it's trying to point you somewhere else); or tells you to talk to a character who doesn't help you one bit (when it really meant someone else); or you have to collect something that looks unreachable, when it really meant some other object. Then it all falls apart and becomes maddeningly frustrating. And if you do go to look at a guide, you end up reading a ton of spoilers for things you've missed.
It's like when you're making a LEGO set and can't find the next piece. You have to tell yourself it's there and keep looking.
I've only played a few of the Zelda games (OOT, MM,(both on the N64) and one on the GBA, and Fartwaker on the Cube, oh and the first one on the Wii) and ALL of them re-used the storyline and even level ideas. The Cube one was a bit different because of the open sea but if I remember (in)correctly then the overall story was basically the same.
Hmm, all these four are pretty good. But IMHO OOT is the best of these. Don't remember anything annoying about it, whereas all the others suffered from little something, at least if you went for 100% completion... (WW: all the sea chest picking, MM: some heart pieces were way too hard, TP: a bit too slow start).
All a poll like this does is let the poll's creator know how young their readership is. Is the winner a recent entry in the Zelda canon? Start writing in lolspk. A poll like this is meaningless without asking the respondant's age at the same time.
Anyway, I'd plump for GNNNNEYYAAAHH CAN'T DECIDE BETWEEN OoT AND WINDWAKER.
I have Majora's Mask, but I can't for the life of me figure out what to do. I am stuck in the first village, and then the time runs out, and anything I have accomplished I have to do again. Which bored me after a few attempts, and I haven't played it since.

Spoiler:
Leave the village and find 3 kids in one of the corners of the map. Talk to them and join their group. Things will open up after that (I think anyway as I've not played it in years). Anyting you learn is "saved in your memory" so that when time re-sets, you don't need to go throguh some things again and you'll remember passwords etc. You can also "re-set" areas to their post boss state by putting "their remains" on a post in the entrance to a dungeon so that you don't need to complete those every time either

Are ANY of the Zelda games NOT a re-hash?
Um... The first one.
Hah! That's quite logical, given the surveyed facts. :D
Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask.
So if nothing else, it's a certain victory for the N64!
BTW, MM is eleven years old now. Eleven years old! Time really does fly...

Like we all didn't know that was written in stone from the start anyway
