Good mobile phone tariffs (in England?)

edited May 2011 in Chit chat
Right, I detest mobile phones, but I won't bore you with that. Anyway, I've got to start carrying one with me, so I've dusted off the old Viewty and now I'm looking for a cheap tarrif, but I don't know anything about the thing. What I want is probably pay as you go, and hopefully with free texts. I'm mostly not bothered too much about actual phone calls, and don't care about things like free ring-tones, sending pictures from the phone's camera, browsing the 'net etc, I just need to be able to send and receive texts and the occasional phone call, for a reasonable price.

Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks for any answers.

You asked for PayG, but your probably going to save money going on a ?10 pm tarrif:-

That also includes 30 mins of talktime a month, not that you would need it since you said you just stated you want unlimited txt.

You could even get a new handset at that price, which in my view is a bargain... much better value than going payg...Only thing you'll need is a good credit history...

If you already have an unlocked phone then I strongly recommend giffgaff.

    http://giffgaff.com/

It runs on the O2 network (so you may want to check coverage where you are). Basically the tariffs are quite competitive, you can manage your top ups online using a card.

tariffs are here (and for PAYG they are pretty good):

You can then buy different 'goody bags' every month if you need them. They cover things like unlimited texts, minutes and unlimited internet.

(The ?5 one will give you those unlimited texts you want.)

I've never needed a goody bag myself yet (So far spent less than ?9 on phone tariffs since I got the phone in February including mobile internet use!) - but I think when I go away for a few weeks over the summer I will get a ?10 goodybag which gives me unlimited internet, unlimited texts and 250 minutes (Not that I'll talk that much!)

I'd never get a contract - can't guarantee I'll have the money so this suits me fine!

I'm on Orange "Dolphin" and if I top up by ?10 a month, I get 300 texts and 100meg to browse with (handy for Facebook and WoS on the go). I find the tenner spreads out well over the month and I'm normally ready to top up again at about the time that the deadline to get those extras comes around anyway. Plus, I find the texts and meg allowance is more than enough for my useage.

my wife does something or other a bit like that with Orange on pay as you go, gets lots of text and talk time or some such

I have a pay as you go Tesco

    I just won't have a contract mobile.

(however - there may well come a time in the near future, where I ditch the landline, in which case a contracted phone wouldn't be out of the question at all)
