Games with a puzzle/adventure aspect are good, so Boulder Dash-style/inspired games. Also the Dizzy games...

Boy, do I have a game for you!

    Terramex

It's got everything! Choice of characters (so the game plays a bit differently with each char), Dracula, different solutions, (not too hard) obstacles to avoid, a doddering professor, snakes, and so much more. Overall, it's a very good little adventure to play through. Stay away from the map and online solutions though, as it's a lot more satisfying to figure it out on your own.

Neat game indeed, but far from being "undiscovered", I'd say

    Agreed.

It might be "undiscovered" by mark_k though, so I'm just helping him find ALL the BEST game[strike]s[/strike]

    Paras by Lothlorien.

IIRC, Johnny reb was done by Lothlorien as well. Another strategy war game based (would you believe) in the American Civil war period.

Had me hooked when I was a young 'un!

Kane - shoot birds, ride a horse, shoot cowboys, ride a horse again

I had this before I had my Spectrum on my C16. Great game. On the C16 version you go from shooting birds to the shoot-out scene, with out the horse riding which on the Spectrum version is a big of a bind if I'm honest. At least you can practice all stages.

Agreed though, good Spectrum version. Never played the C64 release.

If there are any Rogue-like RPGs for the Spectrum I'd probably like that too. (Apart from Master of Magic, I don't know of any others.)

You mentioned The Valley in the first post, I used to quite like this game, didn't play it when it came out but 'discovered' it a few years later. It's a bit slow but I found it quite enjoyable. I was tempted to name it in the "crap games that you enjoy" thread but I think quite a few people liked it.. :-P

Not exactly an undiscovered gem, but I reckon Out of the Shadows is by far and away the best of the speccy rogue variants. I was impressed by Master of Magic though - bought it without knowing too much about it (as it was cheap!) and was pleasantly surprised. Found it quite easy though.

Not sure if this is undiscovered but 'Rogue Trooper' is quite an enjoyable 3D game, with nice graphics. Its also very easy to complete.

Yes, it's a non-standard 3D which might make purists raise their eyebrows, but I liked it a lot back in the old days. It also introduced me to the comic book character since no comic series from 2000 AD was published in Italy until the half of the '90s or so (first one being Slaine if I remember correctly).

Pity it was so easy to complete!

Reckon Turbo the Tortoise is an undiscovered gem. Came out quite late when many people had moved onto the Amiga. Its a great platform game and with great graphics (by one of our very own wossers)

what is a c16? - I take it you still had to do the final horse section i.e. beating the train ? I quite like the horse sections tbh

great game, remember loads of hype at the time for it though, in YS etc...don't think it went under the radar in speccy terms. also as a game it is borderline identical to Yogi's Great Escape, which everyone slated!

thanks. happy to say I've never heard of these.

I'd better stop waffling and suggest another game

    how about Star Paws

I only recently read that this game is what matthew smith's follow up to JSW was supposed to be, except programmed by someone else. It's definitely original. used to play it all the time and be able to get far in it but trying it now it seems difficult. worth a few goes, if only to understand what it's like to be a spacesuit wearing cat who has to rugby tackle escaped chickens

Sorry, I didn't see you'd asked me this. You obviously now know. The C16 in my opinion had better quality games than the C64. the graphics were very solid looking, and included the ability to change the hue of each of the colours in palette (excluding black or white, can't remember which), given 121 different colour options. Pretty impressive for a machine of this age.

And as for Kane, I've no idea if you had to do the horse riding level in the final section. I never got that far.

Yes you had to, although it was by far the most difficult section of the whole game.

The drawback was the lack of hardware sprites. At least, it supported character-based modes, which is a plus.

In case you don't know, KiCHY (from "Adventures in Time" fame) ported our game Uwol to the C-16 and the results are pretty good :-) http://plus4world.powweb.com/software/Uwol

Lately I casually found this collect-em-up platform game, Montana Jones II:

The beginning is pretty easy but the game becomes progressively more difficult. Simple but neat, old school gaming at its best.
