New Wii :-

edited June 2011 in Chit chat
Nintendo have uncovered the new Wii.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-13689609

Looks interesting. I quite like the idea of information only being available to each Gamer, I suppose that will start with Poker and Scrabble type Games, and then develop.

  • Oh good - another gimmicky console.

Perhaps this one won't be filled with dross like carnival games...

From the reports I've been reading, it seems you will only have one of the new touchscreen controllers per console, with other players using Wii Remotes... seems like a missed opportunity, would be great to give each player a view of the action.

But at least they announced backwards compatibility with the Wii.

Depends on how popular it is I suppose. The most successful console always ends up with the largest amount of crapware for it - PS1, PS2, Wii, no different any of them.

Good news is that Nintendo appear to have a lot of the major 3rd party developers on board to cater for the hard-core (hate that term). Batman: Arkham City, Battlefield 3 are amongst a few that have been announced.

As for the controller, it's pretty awesome that you can switch the stream from the TV to the tablet screen.

Guess only time will tell if the controller is stupidly big to use. Reports I've read so far suggest it is very comfortable.

so is this going to be used with the actual Wii, or will they send out a new Wii?

I'm sure I saw a picture earlier on (can't find it now though) that showed the hand controller along with, what looks like, a new console unit. It's shapped like a Wii, but lays flat and has rounded edges. Almost looked like a compact Xbox360 as it had a silver stip on it's front.

How long they've been on board is open to question considering that all the video shown from the 3rd party publishers actually came from the 360/PS3/PC versions of the games. Time will tell whether the 3rd parties will really sign up to the "innovative" possibilities of the controller, though.

Sony, no doubt, will be quick to point out that virtually everything that the Wii U will do can be achieved with the PS3/PSVita combination.

It's a brand spanking new console that's backwards compatible with the Wii. Rumours are it's more powerful than a PS3.

True, but I suppose Nintendo will be even quicker to point out that you don't need to buy two consoles to do the same job :-)

I'm reserving judgement on that until I hear what price they're going to launch it at. Current upper end rumours aren't far off what a PS3 & PSVita combination would cost.

Really? I've heard Vita is going to be around ?230 and let's say PS3 prices are going to maintain at around ?150-200.

There's no way on earth Nintendo are going to release a console anywhere near the ?400 mark (?250 max I reckon) as it would be commercial suicide for a company that intends to get a box under every family telly. Sony found out this with their arrogant pricing of the PS3 when that launched (to be honest both the 360 and PS3 are still ridiculously overpriced considering the age of the tech)

    We'll see soon enough, I suppose :-)

They already have a box under every telly.

I reckon, given the initial 3DS pricing, that the Wii U may just scrape under the ?300 mark.
  • The thing to remember about Nintendo is they have to make a profit on their consoles. Sony and Microsoft usually sell theirs at a loss but Nintendo can't afford to do this. Therefore if their gonna make a super powerful console, it could be quite pricey.

$249 for WiFi version and $299 for the 3G version according to the official release.

Speaking of the Wii U (which bright marketing genius came up with that), maybe it's just in the videos but I do find the plastic used to be quite cheap, especially with the controller. But then nintendo have a year to sort out the entire console so maybe this is just a temporary thing.

I find it hard to believe the Wii U will trade for less than $300 but if it does, I would be happy to be proved wrong!

Irrelevant. If that were the case why did Sony bother after the PS1 and 2, they were under more TV's than any other consoles in history.

I may be wrong here, but I think the Wii is the only console Nintendo have not sold at a loss (or at least a significant one) initially.

Yawn. Beanz slags off a Nintendo console. Big surprise...

I think you're probably correct about the $300 mark, I just hope that doesn't transpose to ?300 like it usually does. Just can't see Nintendo selling to the casual crowd (which they surely want to hit again) at that price point.

why do nintendo have to make a profit on the console?

they get a cut of each game sold like everyone else? this has always been the case for them no?

its not a brand new idea for using a lcd device as a controller as they started it with the cube, but its good that that have made it standard.

if they can get the thing to browse the internet properly that would be pretty sweet.

hopefully they can get some decent 3rd party devolpers on board, all though they could prolly just stick a load of crappy get fit titles on it and it will sell like stink.

i had a great conversation with a woman at work, she was about 40, she was tellling me about her wii, i said i had a 360, and she said 'oh thats more of a console for kids isn't it' i was about to argue with her but i kinda had to agree. they seem to have cornered the market of little kids and older people.

This is a bit of an unknown.

I'd like to have a tablet just lying around so I can pick up email, look up TV listings, etc. on the web without having to turn the telly or console on, but I can't really justify the spend on an android one (the very cheapest 7" ones are affordable, but they're all frame and no screen) - so this is a nice-to-have.

As for whether it will work with games - if you have one each, you can do some clever things by sending secret stuff to the player's screen (like you could with a GBA/Cube setup) but again, by concentrating on one tablet per console you're limiting how much of that you can do. The big question is how to make it useful for one player who isn't regularly interrupted by someone wanting to watch Casualty or Eastenders on the same telly. The other thing it does is further diversify what controls people have (Twin-stick tablet, Wiimote, Motion Plus, Classic Controller v1 or v2, etc) which could make selling software that requires a particular configuration tricky.

The issue with gimmicks is that the inventor probably has all sorts of clever ideas for how to exploit the technology in a game, but if they're not willing to share those ideas with third parties (holding them back for their own titles) then they're not going to see strong third-party releases.

Microsoft and Sony can take a loss on their games division as other parts of their company will be making a profit. If Nintendo makes a loss on every console sold they'd be bankrupt.
That's always been my understanding of it. I could be wrong though. I usually am!

ah i get where your coming from now. im sure they have always made a loss on each indervidual machine and made it back through the games. i think the rumour was that the wii was making a profit though.

i think pokemon kept the wolf from nintendos door many times. :p

Don't think this is the case, in fact I think Nintendo practically invented the loss on the console sale. I'm pretty sure the Wii is the only console (Nintendo, MS, Sony & Sega included) that has been profitable from day one.

In the old cartridge days Nintendo had all developers/publishers over a barrel as ONLY Nintendo could manufacture the carts for NES/SNES & N64 (I know Codemasters eventually got around this) and therefore charged stupid amounts of money. It certainly didn't matter back then if they lost a few yen on each console sale. Of course, the decision to ignore CD's eventually bit them on the arse big time.

Rumour has it the Gamecube was actually the first Nintendo console not to rely on being a loss leader, mainly because losses on the N64 had been high and Nintendo couldn't really afford to go down that route again.

Then again, Microsoft have claimed in the past that the XBOX 360 was selling above cost from day one, though I don't know how true that is. I suspect it would've been a razor thin profit if anything.
