Desert Island Spec-Games

edited November 2004 in Games
Okay, something like this has I'm sure been done before, but what the hell. It's quiet round here.

Chose five games to take on your desert island with you. This might sounds like another "what's your favourite five games?" thread, but think more carefully than that.

Why chose five games you know you love? How about chosing one or two that everyone tells you are great, but you've never been able to complete or even get into fully.

My choices would be:

Manic Miner
3D Death Chase
Target Renegade
Back to Skool
Elite

The last two on my list are both games I have never been able to get into, yet I'm pretty sure they have the staying power you'd need on a desert island! btw, no smart-alec comments about power/electricity/etc. ona desert island!

Anyone else care to offer their own personal lists?

Hmmm this is a good question. I suppose games that have some kind of "career mode" would be quite handy. Also games that are rock hard and would take ages to complete.
    My choices would be ...
    1) Striker
    2) Back to School
    3) Great Escape
    4) Chuckie Egg 2
    5) Some kind of Olympics game, to see if I can improve on my best times/score.

An interesting slant on a question, so here goes.

1.Firelord..I'm sure this is great, everyone seems to think it's great, could not get into it.

2.Wizball..Kids at school raved about this, I bought it played it twice..never since.

3.Firefly..bought it played it for three days, never again, don't know why, it is great.

4.Purple Saturn day..Bought this from a market stall along with Driller, only one was played at length.

5.Mercenary..I loved this and yet did not get very far with it, I should definitely finish it one day.

Reminds me of my Fanzine. I even had Jon Ritman naming 5 games he would take along to a deserted island. Of course I stole the name and idea from Your Sinclair :)

Also our very own Martijn was a victim in one of the mags.

I'll have to think for some time to give you all my five choices. Its so hard :)

I knew I'd also stolen it from somewhere Frankie! But I wasn't sure where!

I know, it isn't an easy thing to decide on by any means. And I dare say that if I chose five games again tomorrow, they'll be entirely different to the ones I picked tonight :)

    A very good question.

I'm sure everyones played games that they thought they would enjoy but couldn't get into. As long as on this desert island there was backup!!!

    1. Elite.
    2. The Sentinel.
    3. Amaurote
    4. Ant Attack
    5. Bubble Bobble

3, 4, 5 I enjoyed but could never get to the end of. 1 and 2 I hated but good, god they were impressive.

Definitely Cookie, Manic miner and (1983 version) Scrabble.

Lords of Midnight would provide a learning experience. Much as I admired it, I never really got into it much. Same with Elite.

I'd take games such as chess, and scrabble etc

I see I didn't put nearly enough thought into this one as I should have!

I'd definately stick with my choices of:
3D Deathchase (good quick blast of a game)
    and
    Elite and Back to School.

But what to replace my opening choices with....? :)

Scrabble is a bloody good choice! That is one game that you can really play the computer against and get a good challenge out of it.

Oh bloody hell. I was wracking my brain trying to remember that game (LOM) and plumped for Bubble Bobble instead!!!

    1. Elite - cos Im just learning to play

    2. Kickstart II - cos haven`t played for years and could make own levels so it`d last

    3. Renegade (just for FUN)

    4. Great Escape (cos I have to)

5- Chaos - cos I never played it and you guys say it`s mint... I reckon it`d last a bit, and I can use it for swapsees if I ever bump into wanna you`s :)

Chaos - The best game ever, nuff said.

Snowball - I would have the time to visit every room in the game (and make the bigest map ever for a spectrum game :) ).

Pogo - My fav arcade game, never get bored of this one.

Chess - Any version though they are all too easy on the spectrum ;)

    Crusoe - Natch.

Interesting twist on the traditional "Fav games". Well here is my five "Desert Island" games. These are the games I've heard good things about but never got around to spending enough time on them to decide for myself. :)

    1) Dun Darach
    2) Lords of Midnight
    3) Knightlore (yeah, yeah - I haven't played it ok?)
    4) Any of the level 9 adventures. I've played some, but never deeply enough.
    5) Wanted: Monty Mole/Technician Ted. Two platformers I really have to get into. I'll probably toss a coin and pick one when the time comes. :)
  • edited November 2004
    Arjun, you've never played Knightlore?
  • edited November 2004
    Here goes then:

    1) Scrabble - good enough against the computer to pretend they are actually my family, so I can still celebrate all those family gatherings I shall be unable to attend.

    2) Viking Raiders - Just for fun. And lots of other really wild things.

    3) Chaos - handy if you meet any natives and fancy a multiplayer game. Or maybe you could get a rescue party addicted to it. If not, you are stuck with the single player version. But there are far worse to be stuck with.

4)Leaderboard Tournament - There are unlikley to be any municipal golf courses on a desert island. Not that I play golf, but I might get the urge with that all that time on my hands.

and finally 5) Elite. Cause it goes on for ever and ever. And then once you get past the lenslock, the real game is massive too. What a bargain.

    good topic Matt,

I disagree about Scrabble though... the temptation to cheat would be too strong.

    My top 5 'not sure' games would be;

    1) Laser Squad - I love Rebelstar 1/2 but never really got into this. I'm sure it's great though.

    2) Lords of Chaos - as above I guess. I loved Chaos but never got into this.

    3) Elite - I discovered this about 4 years ago and sort of enjoyed it, I can see why people love it.

    4) Football Manager - or whatever footie manager game was best on the speccy. That'd kill the hours.

    5) The Bards Tale - or a decent RPG, another timekiller.

    Knight Lore
    Doomdark's Revenge
    Dun Darach
    Elite
    Alien 8

    Ranarama
Batman (in a desert island I think I could finish it.)
    FlyingShark
    Elite
and yeah, BackToSkool, I never knew what to do in this game but Im sure is cool.

    1) Doomdarks revenge (i prefer Lords of midnight but doomdarks is harder to complete)

    2) Striker - i think ive played this at some stage every week since i 1st played it.

    3) Footballer of the year - i got it xmas 86 , loved it , still love it and still beat my goals tally some years.

    4) Lunar Jetman - hard as nails , would love to spend time to become an "expert"

    5) Grand National

Well one of the game which absolutely captures my fantasy but I never got to really play it is Carrier Command.
I know it was a huge hit and the Spectrum version is just as good as the 16 bit ones(plus you can use the mouse!!), but I never learned how to play it. I downloaded the instruction but it's a long file...
I guess on a desert island I would have enough time to learn how to play it and I am sure I ' ll enjoy it.
Same as above for Elite, but I would like to take the 128K version with me.
The Sentinel is another good candidate, but I played it a lot and I got as far as world 5465 and I don't know if it would take me very long to finish.
There was also that game that you have to build your droid and get it to complete some tasks, but I forgot the name.Never learned how to play it, but I would take it along with me.
And of course some big adventure game like the Guild of Thieves. I love the concept of adventure game but I never really had the chance to play one trough, unless it was written in Italian and very short.I guess to play one in English requires to know certan kind of words and lots of uncommon expressions.
Learning that would keep me busy on a deser Island...

Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Elite, Sentinel, Doomdarks Revenge and possibly JSW :)

    (In no particular order)

I'd have FGTH to have the C64 tunes playing tho! :)
    No one important.

    Treasure Island Dizzy
    Three Weeks in Paradise
Spy Vs Spy 2: Coconut Capers
    Beach Head
    Auf Wiedersehn Monty

All in all plenty to distract me if I get bored of tropical beaches and all that sunshine.
  • edited November 2004
If I could have just five games I'd like to take...
    Back to Skool
    Spellbound Dizzy
    Castle Master
    Rainbow Islands
The Amazing Adventures of Robin Hood

I never finished Spellbound Dizzy. I always used to get a bit bored. Maybe now I've got to go and live on an island I'll stick with it. I think I'd cry every day for the ones I had to leave behind though.

Amazing how the same ones keep coming up.

    Mine

    1) Elite ( lifetime replay value )
    2) Sentinel ( sooooo many levels )
    3) Laser Squad ( different game evey time you play )
    4) Carrier Command ( game I never really played either )
    5) Football Manager ( just keep on playing )

  • edited November 2004
I could take all the Dizzy games and leave them there, if anyone likes?
    No one important.
  • edited November 2004
For a five minute fix, Gunfright
For a long haul, Head over Heels
    For a challenge, Laser Squad
For something different (ie a game I never really got into, but would love to persevere with), Knight Tyme (or one of the Magic Knight series)

and finally, for an ego boost, Back to Skool (the only one of these five I managed to complete without a poke/cheat. It's nice to 'win' every now and again!)
  • edited November 2004
Doomdark's Revenge, definitely. I love Lords of Midnight but haven't yet put so much time into the sequel,a lthough it seems impressive.

Elite's another I never really got round to playing.

I doubt I'd ever get bored of Klax, especialyl as the only way I can get past level 20-odd is by using the warp on level 11.

Bombjack and Deathchase would complete the set - nice and simple to play but I enver tire of them

    Great thread by the way.
