whats that about :)

I'm off tomorrow (rare for me) , got a cold :( , so not so good

and get a call asking me to come in , because a co-worker spoke to someone else about getting the day off (when they were supposed to be covering my shift.. they got a day off in exchange already) . I'd go in , but well the cold has knocked me out pretty much.

I've left 2 companies in the past that have rung me for support *after* I had left! On both occasions I gave the support for 2 or 3 calls, then offered to support them at high contract rates. Weird - neither of them rang again lol

Say "I'm happy to come in, but I have a stinking cold so may not be on top form. And I'd want double time for the inconvenience." (assuming you are salaried). As someone who spent several years as a "doormat" employee, followed by a couple of decades as an employer when I'd had enough of that crap, I guarantee your boss will respect you more for it, even he suggests otherwise at the time.

Don't just go in on your previously-agreed day off because your boss asked you nicely to. That is lame. :)

We were on holiday with my brother's family in the Lake District five years ago. We were actually on a boat in the middle of Lake Windermere when his phone rang and he had to take a support call for work.

    Being self-employed/freelance I don't get that hassle.

I always go in if I'm asked to cover a shift, because I'm normally schedulaed a full week anyway, if I work an extra day there's 8 hours overtime at time and a half anything over that 8 hours is double time.

Of course without the perks I'd probably just hang the phone up, I've actually done it to one boss in the past.
    Every night is curry night!

Well you would surely see it was a work number so you simply dont answer it, people seem to look at their phone and say 'oh no its xxxx calling...' and then answer it ! Simply dont and say you left it at home or something.

If i'm on holiday the mobiles turned off most of the time, dont care if its work related or not. Sometimes i wish i was back in the 80's when there were no mobile phones at all and you could sit on a beach without hearing any ringtones at all !

Don't do the classic mistake of giving your boss your personal mobile number. If work want to contact you, then they can give you a mobile - which you can switch off whilst on hols, unless that is they want to pay you for being on call at higher rates when you're off.

I only give out my house phone, which is never plugged in due to the cack random calls that you get on the damn things...in fact I wouldn't have a landline at all if I didn't need it for broadband.
