edited July 2011 in Announcements
Hi everyone,

Just to make you aware of the following event, hosted by the Centre for Computing History:

http://www.computinghistory.org.uk/pages/14439/Hackers-Delight

If anyone would like to come up with or take part in any projects or activities for the weekend, please PM me on here. Alternatively, e-mail Jason via the website mentioning World of Spectrum.

Hope to see some of you there!

Simon.

No offence but why would anyone sign up for this? Assuming you're not staying at the hotel coughing up the minimum ?40 entry fee to spend an entire weekend working on fixing the museum's machines, doing their projects for local schools etc - it just doesn't seem like value for money. Personally it would cost ?190 (wifey and me room + fuel costs) and I can't see it being much cheaper for other people.
Perhaps I'm too old fashioned and of course I'm not speaking on behalf of the altruistic introverted masochistic types who may get a kick out of paying for this kind of event...

To quote the website, the price includes:

    Bed and continental breakfast
    2 full days of tech
    Unlimited tea and coffee
Buffet lunch on Saturday and Sunday
Fish and chip supper on Saturday evening
    Surprise goody bag!

That's just what is guaranteed on the weekend - there is more in store.

The price is better value for money for those staying over, as this includes the hotel accommodation. A barcamp/demoscene weekend costs roughly the same price, doesn't include half as much, and isn't always for a charity either. Note the word "charity"... the museum gets no government funding and needs to raise awareness - this is a fun way of doing it.

All things considered, there's a lot there for the money. so I think you've been a bit harsh... I'm not sure where your ?190 figure comes from....

As for "altruistic introverted masochistic types", I suppose I must be one of those as I organised the UK's biggest computer festival at Bletchley Park last year... as a volunteer.

Ah CHARITY - I missed that... apologies for my misunderstanding. I have a jaded view of companies sometimes taking advantage of people, e.g. companies posing as charities to collect clothes. The ?190 was based on ?75pp +?40 fuel costs from Bolton.

That looks like a really fun event!!!... Its things like this that really really make me wish that I had some electronics skills or something to offer... (And its a pity that Im so far away really, else Id be kinda tempted anyway)...

The scaled up Asteroids game with a laser light thingy sounds like a blast!!!...

I hope the event goes well without a hitch!..

    :)

No worries. :) Most of the costs are down to the hotel, so we've tried to do our best on price. What we are doing is trying to include as much as possible to make it worthwhile.

Thanks. :) I'll be travelling from the northwest to help run the event as well!

Because it's fun, perhaps? To meet like minded hackers?

    To quote the website:

"Double room is ?190 for two people [ BOOK ONLINE NOW ]"

I know that's for two people both attending the event, but I suspect it won't be much less for one person attending + someone else wanting to stay for Fri/Sat night.
