I know I've had a milk stout before and it was pretty good, but it all comes down to what brand it is, since not all similar sounding beers are alike (con't remember which one had).
However, this one - Young's Double Chocolate Stout is one of my facourite beers.
...it's very good. Sweet, but good...and very smooth. :)
Yeah you can get that Youngs stuff in quite a few pubs nowadays, quite nice but I couldn't see myself doing a session on it - little too sweet after a while
It's inspired me to crack open my first can of Dark for the evening.
Not as nice as Brains Dark, which I became a massive fan of when I lived in Wales, and of course from the can it couldn't compare anyway. But still a nice drop for the price.
Sorry, steering the subject away from milk stout though!
I've spent the last 30 years collecting bottles of beer from everywhere i've been, one to drink and one to keep. That means I have around 500 different beers with a lot of them being limited editions for special occasions.
As a country overall no doubt the best beer comes from Belgium, if you ever get the chance try one of the muti course (usually at least 12 courses) banquets where you get a different beer to suit each course. Fantastic evening and not that expensive if you go out of town.
The single best beers I have drunk is hard to tell but.....
Budweiser Budvar - straight from the open keg - don't think this is the export stuff, its not, its a stunning beer which only has a shelve life of a couple of days. AFAIK you can only get this in the Czech republic - its for internal use only :)
Marstons Pedigree - Straight from the wood - I used to drink this in a Pub next to the railway station in Derby when I worked there. You got a glass when you walked in and then bought the beer by the pitcher, filled straight from the cask on the bar.
Broughton Greenmantle - I don't think this is around any more, I haven't seen it for ages. A really tasty, pale, bitter which has the hint of being a bit like a wheat beer. Only about 3.7% but a really good session beer.
The Dutch Bok beers are well worth a try if you like your black lagers. The annual bok beer festival in Amsterdam Zoo is well worth a visit. Bit of an acquired taste though.
Worst beer - Guinness in the Guinness brewery in Dublin. Disgusting. I don't mind the odd drop of stout but this was awful.
I brew all my own now so I can get what I want without having to drink from cans or the watered down gnats piss that most of the "imported" beers are. A prime example would be wifebeater - A great drink in the low country's but a shadow when you get a 24 pack from Tesco.
Edit - To answer the question, Milk Stout tastes a bit like watered down Murphy's or Guinness - The barley isn't roasted as much so its not as full bodied. I tend to cook with it more than I drink it, its really good for Steak and Ale pie.

Brains Dark is indeed a great pint. However, it has now been topped by Brains Black which I have heard Guinness tried to buy off of Brains so they could shelve it.

that must be well past its sell by date as the brewery is now Wells Young's!!

I just checked the latest can this morning, and it says "Wells Young" in small letters on the side. It was brewed in April this year and has a sell by date sometime in 2012.
They've probably just kept the look of the can so people don't get all confused...
-after all...anyone who takes a closer look at the can has been drinking. :p

There's only one way to find out...
Yeah, but I'm stuck down south and all our off licences stock now is polish beer. nothing else.
I think I'm going to have to start doing booze runs to the north!
This might be a good place to start - specialise in Belgium stuff but there might be weird n wonderfull stuff on there too

tescos sell it .. or did.. small black tins, in packs of 4.
(I got that off the wiki page for it)

it's a bit like the Guinness brewed under license in Nigeria. it tastes different due to a different type of sugar being used.
wouldn't know about it.. as I don't drink stout.

Words can't describe how that looks, so I'll try using a picture:
Mackeys is too sweet, and it's piss weak as well, proper old farts drink.

Hell no, I'm getting me a good shopping list from this :D
It does pack a punch that's for sure - but hot damn it tastes goooooood
one to savour in a nice pub or at a house party/BBQ type affair
...and your bulb end
Aye! If you want to fall face first into the grill, and sear a sausage onto your forehead
pish - this hairy lump knows his limits.....and it's at least 3 of those bottles
