Ultra-OT: MSX emulators

My knowledge of the MSX is zero. However, having been alerted to a home-brew Rick Dangerous for the MSX, I need to track one down - if only to have a stab at this version so I can report on it for Rick Dangerous Resurrected.

Any recommendations, for those of you well versed in the ways of MSX?

The chap in this thread, wishes to move from MSX emulators, to the real thing. Perhaps he could provide you with some information on MSX emulators.

    WELL WELL WELL...
I happen to be a big MSX fan,
because my second most beloved computer was my MSX 2+ Sony F1-XDJ ( incredible computer if you consider taht came out in '88 )

There are several emulators for MSX, included one wich is actually the official japanes emulator and it's not even free.

But the best one(and free) you can get is called BlueMsx, available at

    http://www.bluemsx.com/

It's just the best you can get and it does have a Spectaculator feel to it, because it has a nice GUI and plus you can customize in a very easy way any kind of system configuration, since this particular platform was produced in many flavors by dozens of manufacturs.
Anyway on the site you can get a few links to learn more about MSX and find games and compare other emulators, but don't wast your time, I have been trough each one of them and I finally removed ALL of them from my system and left only BlueMsx, which is something that I usually don't do ( even for the spectrum I use at least two emulators regularly for different purposes ).

So good luck, enjoy your new emulator and if you have more question feel free to ask me anytime !

Totally agree with you about the MSX, i never knew anything about this machine until i tried an MSX emulator on my Pocket PC.

Some of the games are very very good specially the large range of Nemesis type games. Great emulator for it on the GP32 as well.

And those were mostly MSX games and some of them MSX2, with much more improved graphics, then came the MSX2+ with a better soundchip built in and even more colors *games made for this model are few but gorgous )and then the Turbo R model, which saw mostly serious applications....
But the best games where on the Mega Cartridge (often from Konami ) for the MSX2!!

BlueMSX it is then, by the looks of things. I still have to get hold of the RD file from somewhere... it's not an official version, so it's rather hard to track down. Plus I also need to find out which one of the MSX machines it's designed for, but it was made in 1992 so if that's a clue to anyone... is it likely to be the MSX2?

    RD,
being an european game from the 90s, is very likely to run on an MSX2.
Most of the games from Japan happyly run on an MSX2 hardware(60hz though, which you can emulate on BlueMsx simply by switching to a japanese or brasilian MSX2 model) with some extra features for advanced model like MSX2+ or external sound boxes( again perfectly emulated within BluerMsx).
Some later games and application were written for the Turbo R model(only in Japan though), which is basically an MSX2+ with double clock speed.
You should just start your emulation on an MSX2 model setting and everything should be fine, and in case your game was ment for MSX will run exactly the same on an MSX2 hardware but with more brilliant colors !
Can't help you with the file you are looking for, but I know where to find a remake in hi color for MSX2 of Abadia del Crimen.......
Ever played Livingston I presume for MSX2 ?
    Best conversion ever.....

The MSX was a nice machine, a little too late in Europe perhaps. I can remember the Konami games on cartridge for it were very good.

Q_armando, after reading this thread, I've decided to give the MSX (well, in emulated form, at least) a whirl; tell me, where can I download good MSX games, and the conversions you mention of Abadia del Crimen and Livingston I presume?

    Thanks.

I have downloaded BlueMSX many times.
Every time I select the executable I get the error message box:

Archive corrupted, please try to download this file again.

I have tried downloading on a different PC and get the same error.
