edited August 2011 in Sinclair Miscellaneous

..you know, your tattoo artist might not like you very much if you expect him to do all those intricate circuit details and stuff... Just to be really cruel, you could do away with a photo and maybe give him a blueprint schematic instead, then he'll really hate you for it!!!!!

actually he's well up for that kind of stuff, what he hates doing is bland stuff and tribal tattoo's

It would be over a few sittings and not an entire pcb, the idea is the flesh is ripped to show a speccy on the inside either around a zilog z80 (not another make) or the ula not sure as yet

And what does your wife think of this exactly?

wow clivey was building a cyborg based on the z80...

ah well it can fight terminator as that used 6502 :)

You could always do the Spectranet, it's beautiful. You can either do schematics or the PCB layout, all you need is to download gEDA and you can make it as big as you like :-)

(Alternatively, I have several Speccy PCBs out of their cases, I can take a photo this evening if you like).

What's next, a tatoo of a Sinclair Joystick?

What issue board are you going to do?

Good point - Will you go for the spider or the dead cockroach?

I've had a look through the 7 or 8 boards I have and would you believe none of them have a Zilog-branded Z80? I'll scan a few in later and put them online if you want to have a look through them to see if any take your fancy.

I've just shown Mrs Cheese this pic and asked if she likes the tatto. She said "I'm concerned that if I say yes you might come back with one, so I will say no" hehehe ;)

dunno which revision to choose tbh but l'm temped to do the spectranet on my arm, the speccy pcb will hopefully be for my back showing through a torn flesh effect

any pictures would be appeciated, going to take some snaps myself asap as i'll be starting it next tuesday to get it finished for replay in november

the sinclair logo is about 10 months old now

I made a start and scanned a few boards, if you like the look of any of them I'm sure I can do some some higher resolution pics:

I have about 4 others to do and will open up the cases tomorrow but I hope this helps!

    nice I'm liking the shots

just cracked one open and it's a 4s revision (it's a dead pcb) beautiful board with a zilog z80 on it, but I am wondering about the dead cockroach

    hmm decision, decisions

mind you would help if I had a decent camera to get a detailed close up

You'd be surprised at some of the pictures a dodgy camera with even a basic macro can turn out with the right setup. If you want any closeups of my boards what I'll be doing is fixing the camera overhead, getting plenty of natural light on it and using the timer to take the shot. That last one has turned out to be quite important in the past because no matter how well you have the camera fixed there always seems to be a bit of jitter from pressing the button. If you use the delay timer it gives you a chance to let go and let everything settle down before the sensor is exposed. Great for night-time shots too where the exposure time is longer. I should have more pics up in the morning.

I added a few more pictures to the web album and a test of a high-detail version. It's actually 5 shots stitched together so there are a few seams but nothing too major. Is that sort of thing any good to you?

These pics are really great!! Thanks for your time, especially as you had to remove the heat sink on them!

Glad you like them. I found a couple more Speccies so I'll have to scan those boards in too.

I figured it made sense to remove the heatsinks to show off the whole PCB. As it happens I had ordered a batch of Recom 78B5s from Radionics so they were coming off anyway. The next step is to look into replacing the speakers with ones from mobile phones to get some extra volume (assuming the fidelity is good enough).

You could also take 2x pictures of each. One showing the original hardware including heatsink and then your other pictures showing the whole PCB. Then you have ones with & without modifications for "posperity purposes".

Ala the mobile speakers, size is also important, but basically they're built much the same way. I used to be a mobile phone technician and have replaced millions of speakers in various phones, usually they have a habit of collecting iron/metal particles and these stick&puncture the membrane. The principles are the same in the speakers whether it be Nokia or Sony Ericsson e.t.c.
Perhaps you could try to find a closed encapsulated speaker/beeper, as the spectrum (48K I presume?) has only a certain frequency response and these encapsulated ones will boost the volume and still retain the frequencies.
If you just replace with another speaker of more or less the same, I don't think you'll get increased fidelity, but please let us know, this could become quite a great mod! :)

yup certainly is, I going to go for the 4s board mainly due to the colour of the pcb I like the vibrant green colour

Thanks for the shots, they're quality in fact I've pinched them all!!

I'm thinking about it more because the original speaker is rated at 20mW and you see them available now delivering at least 10 times that.

I've had a look at a few and as you have, noticed the issues about the frequency response and resonant frequency. I'm in two minds as to whether I actually want to preserve this feature, especially as I don't know what those specifications are for the original speaker. I have a couple of beeper-style ones in mind and also one which is supposed to be a "high-quality" speaker for use in laptops. Over the next few weeks I'll obtain these and try them out and report the results back.

I want to have something that performs well for beeping and sound effects but that also works for multi-channel music as well.

Sorry for the delay in replying. Do you want the issue 4s board blown up or are you happy with the resolution I have it at now? I could do a pan and stitch like I did with the test if there's any particular area of the board of interest to you (you'd have to photoshop in a genuine Z80 though because I still haven't managed to find one amongst all the boards I have). I would also take off the flying lead from the reset points on the PCB (and tidy up the EAR socket which seems have been damaged with a replacment patched in at some stage).

One thing I did mean to ask, with that sort of detail going on the tattoo, will it not smear over time as colour tattoos seem wont to do or is that down to the quality of the inks and workmanship?
