Enabling joystick movement in Elite

I'm using Spectaculator + an Xbox 360 wired pad + the Spectrum 128 version of Elite. The buttons work, and I can assign any key to a button, but the actual movements (Dive, Climb etc.) don't work. I've tried freezing the game and pressing K, as per the instructions. I've tried all the different types of joystick from the Options menu in Spectaculator. I use the 360 pad with many other emulated Speccy games, and it's fine.

Probably something dead obvious I'm missing here. ANy idea how to get it to work? Cheers.

    Select kempston joystick in your emulator and then on screen with rotating ship and "Press space commander" move kempston joystick to left. Maybe it works with Sinclair stick too, i dont remeber, it was eons ago and i always played with kempston. Enjoy...

    Elite 128k has some neat stuff in as traders sometime go out of stations and Viper police actualy fly off Coriolis of you atrack it.
