I never used usenet and didn't find out about it until it became available through Google Groups. Yes, I understand that's not the right way to do it, but it's good enough for me. I once tried to get used to a newsreader and got confused with all the threading, having to download messages, lots of posts quoting other posts, etc.
I remember when Nick tried to approach C.S.S. and start a conversation about its decreasing popularity. The reception was a bunch of cannons shooting in his direction. I see that some people stop by every few years (!) to post something on C.S.S. But for the most part it looks like there are a few people over there saying things that don't make any sense (to me).
I understand why some people criticize forums, but I enjoy them. Correction: I dislike some forums out there (format, colour, interface, etc.) but I love this one.
edit: It seems some people here (like me) only visit C.S.S. and other groups via Google Groups. You should know that's one of the reasons you see the spam messages. Most people with news readers never get to see spam.
I recall it had a coat of llama-wax (DYSWIDT?). Also for extra kicks - was the most disturbing thing you've ever read "Chris Boardman giving John Prescott a Backie"? I think you'll find it is.
And then you could perhaps tell me how X128 and EmuZWin somehow manage to do the impossible?
Which bit of "trivial or impossible" do you not understand?
Go on.
I don't need to. You've just once again demonstrated that you don't listen to what people are saying to you.
So your defence is that you lacked the manners to respond to other people, so I shouldn't be offended that you treated me the same?
Nobody else has been "offended" enough by it to feel the need to repost their suggestions in the thread, and then bring it up in an entirely unrelated thread.
You asked for suggestions, then ignored them, or just gave rude, self satisfied answers, which is neither fair nor civil.
2) Who else remembers Cyborg? PK and him are of the same mould IMO. Clever but not given to suffer fools kindly!
Oh well, I remember him. When I joined the forums about 2005 he was still here but slowly going to leave.
A great technical expert but a rather unpleasant guy if you ask me. I was a newbie then and remeber that a presence of people like him made me hesitate to say anything technical or even ask a question as they could make me feel like a complete fool with their answers.
He was a true cyborg - his answers were short "Yes", "No" or "You have no idea what you're talking about" (I wonder why he didn't respond with "Invalid input" or something like that :) ).
I recall it had a coat of llama-wax (DYSWIDT?). Also for extra kicks - was the most disturbing thing you've ever read "Chris Boardman giving John Prescott a Backie"? I think you'll find it is.
Another thing why I don't feel the spirit of this newsgroup. When I read without any introduction things like this, I can't make any single sense of it, it sounds to me like talking of people being on drugs :)
True. To bring the thread back on topic, then, can I ask if it's possible to download all of a newsgroup
Well, up to the limit of what the server retains yes that's easy. Just tell the newsreader to download all the old messages and to always download new messages to disk.
What exactly you have to do in your newsreader to achieve this obviously will involve reading the manual.
If you want to download all the messages ever posted in the group ever then you have to find someone else with an archive who will give you a copy. ("someone" in this case could be google if you don't mind crawling through the messages and a great deal of unfiltered spam with one of the most hideous broken web based interface ever devised...)
Which bit of "trivial or impossible" do you not understand?
What I don't understand is your implication now that these features are trivial (surely a REWIND function is not trivial) and by extension not worth adding (I think all three features are well worth having).
Nobody else has been "offended" enough by it to feel the need to repost their suggestions in the thread, and then bring it up in an entirely unrelated thread.
I was making a valid point, using this situation as a supporting argument.
Why are you the only person who has got uppity about not getting a response to your ideas?
I'd hardly call it uppity - one post mentioning it, to make a valid point (that emulation authors can sometimes be less than welcoming to suggestions).
Anyway, let's leave it here. We both have better things to do than to argue the toss, I think.

Right, looks like I'll have to see how far back google archive the newsgroups. I used to be with BT, and they carried newsgroups, but for years now I've been with Talktalk, and I don't know if they have the newsgroups, I'll have to check.

At least if it is google then the process should be well documented (I hope...). I wish I'd known about this years ago though, as I'd have block downloaded posts (if I could) to keep permanently. Nowadays, with always-on broadband it's not so much of a plus, but in the pre-broadband days, being able to have a whole archive would have been great.

Unlikely, most ISPs have retired their news servers as the number of people using them doesn't justify the cost of running one.

RZX Recording | Rollback. Adding a hotkey to do that would, yes, be trivial.
In what way were my suggestions not sensible?
The hi-score one has already been thoroughly dissected in the original thread. I note you haven't replied to the valid criticisms of it made there - can I ask why not?
The speed-up idea was complete bobbins. There's no way you can speed up the logic of the vast majority of Spectrum games while keeping the frame rate the same (there are a few exceptions like the Freescape games, but that's a fortuitous quirk of the way they were written).
The game front-end idea is just not something that should be implemented in an emulator. It should be a separate program.
I'd hardly call it uppity - one post mentioning it, to make a valid point (that emulation authors can sometimes be less than welcoming to suggestions).
No, the uppity-ness was:
Getting grumpy about me not replying to your post in the original thread.
Getting grumpier when I didn't like your ridiculous formatting (I don't care whether you think it helps or not - it doesn't help me).
Getting even grumpier when I had more important things to do than deal with your ridiculous ideas.
Sitting there sulking about it all for two months.
Hijacking a completely unrelated thread to moan about it some more
Continuing to be grumpy about it in this thread
I mean, seriously, how much effort have you put into moaning about this now? Think of all the useful things you could have been doing.
1) I haven't seen Karingal around for some time now. Hope he isn't taking his moderator duties lightly! ;):P
It is with great regret that I have to inform you that Karingal has gone to a place where there's no wifi, no internet, no 3G. A peaceful, happy place. Some of us in #spin knew it was coming of course, but that doesn't make it any easier to accept :(

Spain, I think it was.
why did i immediatly think of socks and sandals. :p
It is with great regret that I have to inform you that Karingal has gone to [...] Spain, I think it was.
What?!?!?! Why would he want to go there ... I mean, I hear it rains a lot over there, and apparently it stays mainly on the soggy plains. Wouldn't it just have been easier, and equally as satisfying for him to pitch a tent in his back yard  Doesn't he know there is a global recession going on?!?! Or maybe his pension is such, that he does not have to worry at all :-o

Well... I have a problem with this. Without wishing to be pedantic [0], the rain in Spain mainly seems to fall on the Basque country, which is notable for its mountains and distinct lack of plain.

[0] actually, wishing to be very pedantic
Why, I never!!! Do you have a PhD-ery of any sorts??? I'm fairly sure that the gentleman I loosely quoted, Henry Higgins, PhD, can be trusted! I mean, he is a professor of fonolology after all! ( Ah, the gall of that man, Winston! )
Who turned this topic into a conversation about Karingal? :D
Mr. karey did it himself, albeit indirectly, when he posted that video-update of his from the "good time" he's having in Spain. The link is a page back.

Not only in the Basque country, but also in all north. But here in the south (at least in M?laga), I don't remember when was the last time it rained, maybe may or june. According to forecasts, it supposed to rain today, but now it's sunny...
... and here there are some tourists with socks and sandals, maybe one of them is Mr. Karey!

Crikey it's getting like IRC in here now!
(which is of course another part of the story!)

What makes you thing the sensible suggestions have been ignored?
Because I'd rather do than talk.

Speaking of grumpies...

well yes... mainly because as Nick's graph shows no-one ever posts anything to read any more!
If you'd got on c.s.s ten years ago you could probably have single handedly made up for the subsequent shortfall in post volume :p
;) ;) ;)

If phonology is spelt wrongly on the certificate in his office he almost certainly bought it mail order from wang-dong university :)
Wang Dong huh...
wrong on about 3 levels. :p
More than that!
That's well and truly ruined my day now! :o
