I was really into this whole hifi scene in the early 90s. Had a fair collection of what-hi-fi and similiar mags. Eventually got together a very modest little separates system - with Mission 760 ,some 49 strand cable and speaker stands. Was great, though had to sell it off some years ago.

I have 2 pairs still . I use 1 set for music making (comparing on hifi ).. a friend thought they were designed for music making .. but the sound is good out of them, obv. not the low end bass.

Yes Mission 760s are a great entry level speaker. My set up was in my bedroom which was'nt very big so really was not going to notice the benefit if buying anything more costly.

Speaking of HiFis I've been looking for one of these now at a reasonable price on ebay for about 3yrs....I was watching this one but forgot about it!!!! less that $13..when they usually go for 150+ GRRRRRRRRRRRRR

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/SHARP-VZ3000-VZ-3000-DUAL-TURNTABLE-BOOMBOX-SYSTEM-/330609168287?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4cf9d78f9f

Saw one at a boot sale a early this year, but with no stylus. I almost brought it so I could ebay it. Howevever, I was not sure how I would pack it and send it.

I also saw something really unusual, a JVC Karaoke machine with 8 track cassete tape player built in. I never knew that both technologies existed at the same time. It must have been at the tail end of 8 tracks and the early adoption of Karaoke in main stream electronics.

Yup you can't beat the wax crackle on those old wartime records, or were they still made of porclain then? :p

Nope, they were made from shellac, a very brittle version of vinyl (was also very heavy).

In the very early days they actually were wax cylinders (well some type of wax).

$150 to destroy your vinyl collection??? (If you still have any) You can do that for free surely?

But seriously those vertical turntables were notorious for skipping

Well I had one for years in the 80s and it was the best sound/performance of any turntable I've owned...and no skipping.

That's why I'd like to get my hands on another.

(Oh and yes I have/still collect vinyl....currently have 4 other turntables too)

Fog I've never seen that to my knowledge, had he mentioned that they were kinda fragile - all sympathy to the guy. I'd have near been in tears if i'd done it.

"Is it, is it, are you done with that then?"

ZX1 asked "Is he related to Mark Curry from Blue Peter by any chance?"

Seems to have come through the philip schofield school of kids tv presenting.

Amazing. Just epic with the drums going. But just a little bit spooky at times (at least to me). Which reminds me of Arthur C Clarke's third law, any significant increase in science or technology is indistinguishable from magic
