Long filenames.

Does anyone know how to get long filenames to be displayed in DOS? Or more specificly long filenames to be displayed in Taper? It's a right pain trying to workout some filenames with just a few letters go go on!
Thank you :)

Forget it. It's not possible. DOS is an ancient dinosaur, only capable of showing 8.3 filenames. Windows 95 introduced long filenames with Joliet.

There are a few utilities that manually implement long filename support.

Taper isn't one of them though and is unlikely to ever be.

Yes but that's not DOS. It looks like DOS, it even smells a bit like DOS, but it isn't DOS.

Is that also the case when you boot in DOS?

Why can CDs using Joliet only have 64 characters and W95 has about 255?

I thought Joilet has 132 and Romero has 255 chars ?

Well please enlighten us Phil. I was meant to mention "Phil will fill us in" :)

I know it's something in that range...

    STFW.

It's 128 bytes (*much* more likely than 132!), encoded in UCS-2 and therefore 64 characters, exactly as Fraser said...

Hmm, well Roxio Easy Coaster Creator tells me I can use 128 characters long...

I made up the 132, but I knew it was something in that reigon.

Sure it is. Try installing MS-DOS 7.1. That supports long file names.

That's what I run on my old 233MHz computer which I use for old games.

    From http://newdos.yginfo.net/msdos71/#msfv:

MS-DOS 7.10 is the best and the most up-to-date version of MS-DOS in the world, and it's also the most powerful, useful and high-performance DOS today (besides GNU GPLed FreeDOS). Thanks Microsoft!

    Yuk..!

It supports long filenames, which is what was asked and what some people said DOS couldn't possibly do.

Does it? I'm willing to bet a whole 75p and a packet of rolos that only the command shell supports LFN. Third party applications like Taper will still only use 8.3 and the original message was how to get LFN support in those, which you can't without re-writing them.
