Cambridge (Baron Of Beef) meetup - dates? -> October 22nd.

edited November 2011 in Announcements
Update: The date has been settled... October 22nd. See you there!

---

Right, we need to do this, because you just know that if we don't, the pub's going to close down sooner or later and we'll spend the rest of our lives regretting it. So...

Let's have a meetup at the Baron Of Beef in Cambridge, famed venue of the rumoured fist fight between Clive Sinclair and Chris Curry. Usual routine: convene around 2pm for chatter about Spectrum games, ogling curious bits of hardware, and any other matters of interest. Including beer.

I'm thinking mid-late November, as that's not too close to either Replay Expo or Christmas, but please add your preferences here so that we can settle on a date: http://whichweekend.com/cambridgespeccymeetup

My preference would be "when the weather's nice" so I can make a motorcycle trip of it, but other than that so long as it doesn't clash with Retroma??a either (which is in the first half of November, I'll be away till at least the 14th)

No, I didn't know about this. Could you please be more specific?

Nothing specific - just the general way of the world.

Strange - I didn't know that pubs were closing all around the world these days!
Anyway, would someone tell me with the full story with the BOB please?

pubs are expensive compared to home drinking + smoking ban = people didn't want to go

there was a fight in BOB.. it was shown in micromen, with the newspaper.

rumour has it that Curry beat his hi-score at manic miner and he wasn't happy *

    * this is made up :)

Not that story, Fog. I read it on my hometown's local newspaper at the time it happened. (I also translated Matt Westcott's subtitles for Micro Men to Italian a while ago.)

I mean, is the BOB going to close forever? change management? be renamed? be demolished? be bought by suspiciously rich Russian gas moguls and turned into a vodka parlor? I am pretty curious about that, you see

Just to be clear: I have no reason to believe that the Baron Of Beef is going to close down. I was just making the point that if, hypothetically, it was to close down at any point in the future, and we hadn't got round to having a meet there, we'd all be kicking ourselves.

And cheers for the link, Fog... I do believe that's the first time I've seen the fight confirmed as anything more than tabloid gossip. (Well, technically it *is* still tabloid gossip, but now it's tabloid gossip that's backed up by first-hand interview quotes...)

someone posted that link the other day,in another thread. so I can't take any credit for it..I forget who.

Alessandro,, pubs are suffering because of lack of trade + brewery rents etc. lots are closing down.

I went to the pub on a date in the summer, in notting hill.. 1 beer bottle was ?2.50 or ?3.50 forget.. when it's less than ?1 in a supermarket... the woman I was with got pimms which was hhm ?5-6 or something.. a BOTTLE of that was ?13 at the time (maybe to make 5-6 of them)

I'll proffer a tentative "I'm in" to this, but I won't add myself to the whichweekend thingy as I'm not sure what days I can or can't do at the mo.

You're quite right; it would be really annoying if the pub either closes down or even changes it's name or something (it'll probably become a Harvester, or a Wetherspoons or something equally awful one day...) before we've had the chance of a Speccy meet there.

Right, it looks like we have one day emerging as the clear favourite, so I hereby declare that the Baron Of Beef Rolled-up-newspaper-fight Memorial CSS Meetup will happen on October 22nd.

(Any chance a mod could update the thread title, please?)

Ooh, an event near me. That makes a change.

I may see you there. Will try and get Jason of http://www.computinghistory.org.uk/ to come too.

OK - what are the options for staying overnight.

I don't mind sharing a room with someone to make it less expensive.
  • edited October 2011
You won't find anything cheap in the centre of town (this is Cambridge!), but finding a cheap hotel or B&B slightly out of the centre town should be easy. Things towards the north of Cambridge will be quicker to get to from the pub than anything to the south.

You could sleep on AY-Chip's window ledge.

I might combine it with a trip to my sister's if she's not busy that weekend and actually attend for once.

Looks like there's a Premier Inn just-about within staggering distance, to the north of the Baron of Beef. I'll probably try to get a room there - winston, you won't want to share a twin room with me as I snore like b'stard after a few beers, plus I wouldn't want anybody to have to witness my regular early-morning sacrificial goat slaughter... So all in all, probably best I have a room to myself :)

No you couldn't. It's covered in clutter.

*will probably be there, but don't want to commit to anything*

Looks like I will be coming, and will kick AY up the backside while I'm there :)

Remember, this is happening tomorrow! Don't miss the Spec-Chums-In-A-Place-Where-Clive-Sinclair-Once-Got-Into-A-Fight event of the year!

Someone should bring a camcorder with and some of you should (playfully) "re-play" the event for the camera ... youtube it for the rest of us who can't make it, please!

Unfortunately, Mrs.C is unwell so I can't make it. Spent 85 quid on a non-refundable hotel room too. grrrr!

Hope you all have/had a good time!

Maybe Winston is still without a room?

Good point. It's a travel-lodge booking and the T&C's say it's not transferrable (they usually ask to see the card that was used to make the booking). If anyone knows of a way around that, then the room is there and paid for so I'd be glad if someone can make use of it. It's the travel lodge in Orchard Park. Booking details available by PM if it helps, and I can phone the hotel and try to persuade them to change the booking if necessary.

Yeah, well apparently the after-show party is still going on in my unoccupied hotel room. Those horny 20-year-old female 8-bit-system groupies go wild for an emulator author, apparently... so don't knock it.
