Atari ST website/forum

edited October 2011 in Chit chat
Anyone recommend a good Atari ST website source, had a google and haven't really found anything in like what's available for the speccy/c64/amiga etc.

Atariage etc has a forum for them but I'm looking for a dedicated website/forum rather than a bolted on one.

    Thanks,

Picked up a 520STFM for $16 on ebay (quite a rare beast here) and looking for info on memory upgrades/hardware hackes and transferring images to disk etc..these should help.

This is the best one I've found.. Been going there for years.. There's also AtariAge - http://www.atariage.com/ - Where a lot of the AF members post too, but it's for all things Atari like the old arcade games, VCS home consoles, the 8-bit computers, etc. - and the ST of course.

I bought a new Atari STE sometime around 1992, back when the prices were getting slashed.

I do remember shortly after, buying the full 4MB upgrade at a computer fair in Newcastle for ?90!

Should be a bit cheaper nowadays. :D

Funny thing was, the 4MB actually broke compatibility with some games. Had to install a memory resident app to pretend only 2MB was installed. (Snowball in Hell was one such game IIRC).

Another thing was, because I had an STE I just had to buy the RAM chips and slot them in, but a mate of mine had an early STFM and he had to buy some "upgrade kit" which also upgraded the memory controller chip to handle the 4MB IIRC. Did work fine though.

If your machine has a floppy disc drive, then putting games on real 3.5" disc should be child's play. I transfered quite a few when I had my first ST.

Please don't ask the name of the program because I've forgotten it.

Little Green Desktop is the best ST site there is.

Aye not many of them about over here though.....at least not at reasonable pricing....surprised I won this one for $16..lucky I guess. Usually seem to go for $75 and up. Was really waiting on a 1040stfm but this came along

Yep it has a drive and I was reading that its a standard PC DD drive in the ST right? So can you write the disks in the PC?

Fog, what's that about SD cards? I have one of those SD floppy disks laying around somewhere are are you talking about a SD device for it?

Yes, if your PC has a floppy drive, you can use a program to put the disc image onto the 3.5" disc which can be run on the ST.

It's practically a PC DD drive - I used an ST drive as a second disc drive on my CPC.

Ok thanks, I'll try and find the program that does that.

I've remembered what the program is - it's a DOS program called Makedisk but the problem is finding it - as I said, I was using it just over 10 years ago.

You can format the disk in the PC to 720 & just copy the TOS files onto it - the ST will take care of the rest.

If you are using Windows 7 then you might notice there is no 720 option anymore :(

Back when, I had a utility for the ST that would format its disks in a way to be both ST and PC compatible. Then you could happily share the disk beteween machines.
