One of the bst pieces of software i've used is notepad.
Does it have syntax colouring and regular expressions?
I'm a big fan of plain text editors too and BBedit is my favorite. It does syntax colouring for HTML, XML, JavaScript, Python and a lot more languages. Regular expressions have saved my life lots of times.

I`ve just started learning, and from what people have said...it`s better to do it by hand (ooo-err) cos the code`l be smaller....

If your just starting out, you are better off using whatever you feel comfortable with, and ignore other people! Its a well known fact that if you put two programmers/web designers/dba's in a room, they will argue over the best ways of doing things.
Personally, I don't need pretty colours in my text, but for others it comes in handy. The only draw back with notepad is that its sometimes handy to have line numbers displayed.
Its good to know there are some people here that can use php though - you never know when I'll be begging for help! Took me 3 days to get bloody WorldPay to work!
I am recoding zxsoftware in PHP at the moment and its taken me more than 3 days to NOT get any of it working at the moment....
Frontpage, Dreamweaver et al are by far the best way to quickly get something up and running. You can always recode and streamline after they have given you the basic framework.
In Adobe Photoshop there is a command called 'Web Photo Gallery'. You point it to a dir with pictures and it creates a gallery for you with clickable thumbs. You can also choose a template. Works like a charm!
Well im going to use netobject fusion, I have just read in a magazine that there is free software called Absolute HTML Compressor " which can strip out unnecessary bits from a file to make it smaller " does anyone know if i could use this on a netobject file and if so how much smaller would the file be THX
The second version of my website was built entirely in Composer (integrated with Mozilla). It may not look amazing but that's entirely my fault. For a beginner, I think it gets the job done fairly painlessly.

Why make the html smaller? This compressor will give you a slightly smaller file and it will sacrifice the readability for sure. Just keep a keen eye on the size of your images, that will save much more bandwidth.
