Mame issues

edited December 2004 in Sinclair Miscellaneous
I've only recently got hold of the MAME emulator and I thought I'll fire up some old arcade classics and see what the originals were like.

Unfortunately, I can't seem to run R-type and Commando (the only 2 games I have). Both give me a list of "bin files not found" messages. Not sure what I'm supposed to do now. The roms are in rtypeu.zip and commandu.zip files respectively in the ROM folder within MAME main folder. Can someone give me some tips here?

Check the advise given in this post:

    http://www.worldofspectrum.org/forums/viewtopic.php?topic=6766&forum=4

from the filenames you give, it sounds like you have 'clone' roms instead of 'parent' roms - the 'clone' roms only contain files different to the 'parent'.

The 'parent' roms you need are commando.zip & rtype.zip.

    Arjun, check your PM.

Thanks darkman. I suppose it's the clone rom problem. Back to some "research" then. ;)

also just be aware.....when they release a new version, some older roms stop working as things get changed quite radically :(

I recommend getting the latest release, version .89, as after many years of waiting Turbo Outrun`s encryption has FINALLY been cracked, I don`t know what Mame you`ve got at present, but I`d recommend Mame32 over Mame, as the frontend really is invaluable for searching/sorting the games :)

    Mame32`s homepage is at :-

    http://www.classicgaming.com/mame32qa/

though you need to get yourself a username/password to actually download it (takes 2 mins)... I`d also recommend you keep an eye on

www.Mame.net forums to keep up on the Mame scene, most of the guys that do the program, crack the encrytpions etc etc are on their everyday, but be warned to read a few posts before asking what may seem resonable questions, as they can get pretty touchy sometimes if it`s been asked a million times...

If you or anyone wants the correct roms for Turbo Outrun (I`ve had the roms for years, but they changed them now it`s fixed, so it comes with a `key` in the zip, you need `set 3`, and the file is Toutrunk.zip, but you also need the parent rom Toutrun.zip, and may as well get the Toutruna.zip file as well...

    head to :-

    http://www.emuasylum.com/

as they`ve started hosting the complete collection again, and have just upgraded to set .89

Mame roms are down `til tommorow, but it`s the only site Ive seen that tells you when certain roms are down, when they`ll be back up.

Remember to run the set3 version, as only it and the `a` set are working :)

Looks like you`ve got into Mame at just the right time, as hopefully Virtua Racing will be fully working within the next six months...

I`d also reccomend Shinobi, my own fave game on it.

Cheers Ckay! I have Mame32 and it's quite nice. Except that auditing games takes a long time. But everything looks and sounds quite good.
Do I have to audit every time I add a new game?

The site you mentioned looks rather goody. Am checking out ur suggestions now. Had a blast yesterday playing Rtype and Commando (thanks to MattLamb!). Is it just me or are the Speccy versions a bit more difficult?

Incidentally, anyone care to list their top 5 Mame games?

Edit: Ok, I've finally managed to get my head warped around this parent roms and clone roms business. The big question then is where do I find parent roms?

Parent roms are only the main roms, the main zip you need, as Im sure you know, therefore most of the places, and there are many that have the roms will, as a default host the parent romset...

Emuasylum has them, don`t know if they`ve put them back yet, but try also :-

    http://www.romnation.net or .com

as that`s where I got most of mine, and I havent got them all by a long way, but have tried to get every game Ive ever played in an arcade, sports center, pub, pictures etc etc.. haha... naturally

1: Shinobi, it`s soo great on arcade

2: Double Dragon, great game, especially two player, notice how even though it`s an arcade game and written (naturally) in MC it suffers LOADSA slowdown, from apperently sloppy code... never noticed at the time

3: Chase HQ ... Classic, though Outrun will mebeez please you more and is easier than Turbo Outrun

4: Crystal Castles, Centipede, Wonderboy, Legend of Kage, Starwars, Pengo, oops

5: Robocop, Joust, Donkey Kong, Yie Arr Kung Fu

    Is that five yet...

edit : it`s best to audit when you get a new game, just click onto the All Games tab at left, after youve put the zip into folder, then right click on the new game, and select audit...

Thanks for the tips CKay. Right click on file for audit eh? Couldn't be simpler! :)

Ooooh, Oooooh, Ooooohh, Pacland as well *_+ Just thought, I know it`s not the best game in the world, but I remember when I first discovered Mame in `99 it was one of the games I was amazed to be able to play, and Strider, Slapfight, etc, at least when you hit Mame, and your coming from a Speccy background there`s hundreds of titles that you know from the computer version, even stuff like Galvan, Solomons Key etc etc are great to see as arcade games..

    Happy playing :)

    Get the newest CHEAT.DAT.
Most games are included and have at least invincibility and infinite time.

Copy Cheat.dat into the folder where mame32.exe is.
When you run a game press TAB, a cheat menu will be there.
    Have fun!

Thanks for the cheat tip DG. I'll need that one for sure seeing how crap I'm at Double Dragon and Robocop!

    You have good taste :)

Rally X is my absolute favourite arcade. Still a shame there never was a decent Spectrum version :(

You can also use HISCORE.DAT which saves your Hi scores.
    http://www.mame.net/downmisc.html
It also has links for CHEAT.DAT.
Go to the first CHEAT.DAT link in the page.

    rainbow islands

Playing the arcade version I have to say the Spectrum conversion is a triumph of coin-op conversions.
  • edited December 2004
Yeah, that`s probably the BEST arcade conversion, for looks/playability and actually managing to get the colour in...

Ikari Warriors is pretty amazing on the spectrum too, it`s a pity that on Mame it`s unplayable (due to rotational joystick aiming), but if you use say Cursors and Z and X, then you can use `a` and `s` for left/right rotation... but I still find it too hard.

    :)

I couldn't agree more re: Rainbow Islands. It's hard to find a more faithful arcade conversion on the Speccy.

And Midnight Resistance suffers from joystick rotation problems with regard the gun, when playing it on MAME, which is also a shame.

By the way, one of my favourite arcade games is Great 1000 Miles Rally. A superb blast of a racing game, which I highly recommend you play on MAME.

Road Racers from Artic, yes, but the controls on that game was horrible. You could not turn 90 degress on the same road :)

Maze Death Race was even worse.

    My favorites are:

    Viewpoint

    Metal Slug

    Amidar

That space invader game with the three ships, eyes, flies, meteors etc.

    Scramble

Back in the early 80's i was amazed at Gorf. Found Galaxians and Space Invaders quite 'samey' but then here came Gorf with all the different levels, so cool back then

    Moon Cresta? :)

Incentive (who are now Superscape Ltd., fact fans) did a great Speccy conversion of that, although the Super Flies of the third and fourth waves got misspelled "Supper Flies" on the inlay! ;)

Incidentally, the eyes (first and second waves) were officially called Cold Eyes, but I (because of the Perishers cartoon -- for anyone who hasn't seen it, it's a sort of British equivalent of Peanuts) always called them "The Eyeballs in the Sky"! :D

Having got a complete (well, complete as of December 2000*) set of ROMs, I like (ab)using MAME's fuzzy name match to obtain a quasi-random game; I type "mame <any English word, or garbage set of characters>", and see what comes up! :D

It throws up some surprising matches sometimes; e.g. "mame shit" starts the Japanese version of Mikie, which in fact isn't surprising given that "shit" is a close match to the start of the Latin transliteration of the Japanese name for this game... :)

(edit to add the footnote I forgot to add when originally making this post:)

*Well, complete as of December 2000, which is when I got this ROMset...

Sadly, I can't use any more recent version of MAME on my present machine, because support for the
-depth command-line parameter has been dropped, and for most games MAME will only run on my graphics card in -depth?8, due to a fault in high video RAM...
