But the riches only extended to areas he deemed to be important - other areas got token gestures but the real riches went unseen by them.
You're making an impression that you're actually talking about Nigeria.
Because i see no difference between Tripoli, Misrata, Sirte and Benghazi and lifestyles there.
Libyans that spoke out against the regime were executed or mutilated in public - often aired on state tv.
What i know of the past the only major execution aired on the libyan TV was after many innocent bystanders were killed by the conspirators in a failed attempt to kill Gaddafi (maybe there were others but i doubt they were because people just spoke against the regime; after all, even the well-known armed fighters were sometimes released, and some of them later joined the rebels, a big mistake on Gaddafis part). What i see NOW is that it were Libyans who resisted the "revolution" who were executed and mutilated in public, filmed on mobile phones and shown on youtube.
Libyans that were seen talking to foreigners were assumed to be spies and were executed or mutilated often without trial.
Any Libyans that left the country were seen as traitors to be executed.
Then i guess thousands of libyan students who were sent abroad by the state were summarily executed on return. Because, you know, them dictators just like to kill educated people more than simple peasants and herders, and it's surely worth a few millions bucks wasted to pay the expenses
Africa is changing for the better... Egypt is a major port and should be rich - yet the pyramids have rotted beyond repair over the last 100 years
Surely Africa is changing for better... with the former libyan rebels announcing the sharia law, with islamic radicals winning next elections in Egypt and alQaeda getting tons of weapons
Bahrain is a beautiful place to live and should be a fantastic holiday resort.
Especially for the medics who were imprisoned and tortured for giving help to the protesters.
That is, not for participating in the protests themselves, but for tending the wounded.
Such a beautiful place indeed, may your holidays there be pleasant and undisturbed.
Libya is full of riches and should be a rich mans playground - yet the very countries that Gaddafi alienated are the ones that would be spending more money there.
Well, he tried to reconcile with the West in the recent years, he opened the country for business, and see how it ended.
Thats a great lesson to any independent authoritarian leader: never ever trust the West even if it appears friendly.
The point is, Gaddafi was an old man who was going to die soon, and his most prominent sons were seen as liberals and moderately pro-western not so long ago. Actually many rebel figures who later went to Benghazi were buddies of Saif Gaddafi, who was trying to draw a new constitution with them, he even managed to bring some dissidents back to Libya to help him. Therefore all this war was about STOPPING any real democratic changes in Libya, give power to the islamists and end any further attempts to unite Africa. Neocolonialism at its best.
Pol Pot was killing anybody who wasn't a true Khmer in his eyes (this means all urban population of Cambodia).
And it wasn't him who paid them for education anyway.
by the way an american war veteran has been shot in the head with a teargas canister in oakland by the police (he's still alive, in medically induced coma), the other day, during peaceful protests against USA's inequalities - anybody is saying anything about it?
in the usa there are millions of poors, and there isn't a public healthcare, there are protests all over the country - "so why not capture and kill obama?"
8 billion people by 2050, the world needs a few more dictators to thin the herd.
Well, theres always that guy in North Korea (can't remember his name). He lets his people starve while he sits in his palace. He also has the worst haircut i've ever seen!

I discussed this on the forum a couple of weeks ago, and it was dismissed. The opinion of the loudest typists was that I was misguided to think the story was being deliberately underplayed by the western media. I still believe strongly that they were wrong.
Not sure it's much of a story....tear gas was fired, it hit someone. Does that require front page coverage in a country where people *intentionally* shoot people with bullets and not canisters everyday?
It would be like reporting "Iraqi stubs toe on US tank'.

Tell that to the people of Tawergha. Or the families of the people massacred in Sirte.

students of tripoli university talking with a "foreigner" - it doesn't seem strange at all to them to do that:
