2 min silence

edited November 2011 in Chit chat
Just wondering if anyone else observes this today and whether their company supports it or expects you to work through it etc

My boss expects us to work through everything! I'll still be having my two minutes silence though.

Interesting, see that seems weird to me - given what it is for etc, my lot are pretty good about it - people offered the choice and if they don't want to work then fine....it's only 2 mins of the day lost but I'd heard from mates they aren't allowed to

Aren't allowed to take a 2 minute break? Do they have to wear nappies to work too?

lol no - just got me thinking as to me it seems a no brainer that you do the silence, and no where I've worked has ever had probs with it but seems that might be changing these days - hence asking what you guys see in your work etc

we are expected to have the silence.

if your not allowed to take it, just write to your local paper.

im sure they'd love a story about a company who show no respect at all the the men who died for us.

Had a huge debate on the RG thread last year when people mentioned this silence, then of course being the internet a few people started bickering about why should they support it bla bla bla. Pathetic. Glad to see none of that here

well we have an email sent every year and we are expected to observe the 2mins silence

regardless of if you think war is right or wrong, or the reasons for going to war is right or wrong it's about respect for those who go to war to protect you and are prepared to give their lives so you don't have to

I've just deleted my last post that was here, I posted it read it back, and had an acid flashback.

Everything went green and purple, and wobbly, but really vividly.

Took it as an omen to remove what I originally said?
    Every night is curry night!

My family and I always observe it.

I guess there are industries where you can't have a company wide two minute silence. It's rather poor that people have to be forced to remember people by turning everything off for two minutes. I've always wondered does everyone remembering something at the same time make it more "remembery"?

its a reminder so you know to remember.

its the equivalent of tying a piece of string found Britains little finger.

What about bickering about whether saying "Muslims Against Crusades should be allowed to burn poppies if they want" should be an offence under the Terrorism Act?

What about saying, debating about someone theoretically discussing the act is allowed?

I refer to the following guideline.

    C) Discussions of religions or religious philosophies, cultural differences, sex, sexual orientation, freedom of speech, politics and governments tend to end in flame wars and trading insults. Please remember that the majority of these discussions end up being locked.

There's an email always sent around the Isle of Man Government about the 2 minute silence, including an instruction to bus drivers to pull over their vehicle and stop for 2 minutes. I think ambulances and coppers can continue, though.

I work for the railway, and the 2 minute silence is announced at major stations.
Also, any trains with a booked departure time of 11.00 will be re-timed to depart at 11.02, although there is no requirement for trains already running to stop.

I'd be ashamed of myself if I didn't observe the 2 mins silence.

It should be a matter of personal choice without being frowned at if you chose not to join in.

Thats all very well but the whole office was observing the silence, the call wasn't even urgent. Two minutes wouldn't have made any difference.
