As far as I'm aware, Steam (the forum member) has not been hacked.

Wasn't it hacked at the beginning of this week?

not surprised.. between them and barclays the pair of them f'd up my money for a month!! (had to get a card re-issued etc) and cost me a shedload of money in calls to bangalore and sorting out money for paypal as I couldn't use my barclay's money.

I have no time for either.. and don't like some companies forcing you to use steam.

I finished playing Skyrim earlier and one of those adverts popped up after the game closed with a notice about it all.

...I didn't feel a thing if anyones worried...

Last weekend. When you log into steam for the first time since it happened you get a message from Gabe Newell telling you about it.
Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.

I don't understand the morons who hack sites and forums. I mean, if they want to impress people with their cleverness (presumably why they hack) then why not do something genuinely impressive with their coding skills, like actually create something. Like a game, or a useful utility. Instead they just try to annoy people (genuine paying customers, in fact) like with this or the PS3 hack that stopped the PS3 online network for a month.

They might be technically clever, but emotionally and morally they're just underdeveloped.

On the subject, does it take much skill to do what they've done here? Or could they have done it easily, using a stolen password, or a downloaded utility, etc? And no, I'm not asking for details on how to do it, I'm just wondering if their tech skills here are impressive, or are they as non-existent as their consideration for other people?

Either way it's not pleasant for people who rely on digital download services. DD is turning out to be very good (and I say that as someone who was previously staunchly against it) but if a service turns out to be vulnerable to hacking then it's going to worry a lot of people.

Steam has been hacked before, which is why I chose not to use it. Being hacked twice really shows how poor their security must be.

Err, only being seriously hacked in nearly ten years of operation proves it's a relatively good system. Mind you, I know a lot of people who have had problems registering and playing games on it...

That's why I avoid Steam like the plague. I always know when one of my friends has brought a game because he moans on facebook when Steam won't let him play it.

I guess the millions of people who do use it and don't complain must just be lucky.

Never had a problem here. I would like to see more old games on there though.
