one for the linux users...maybe

edited November 2011 in Chit chat
I've downloaded and installed(on a Lenovo T410 laptop) the Commodore OS "Vision".
It's a Linux distribution - seems to be Mint severely dressed up and configured for niceness.

On the t410 everything works out of the box with no messing needed - hardware acceleration seems very good too.

I always liked all computers back in the day so the commode theme doesn't upset me too much - and it's not brown it's blue.
http://www.commodoreusa.net/CUSA_OS_Vision.aspx

It's quite simply a delightful linux distro - packed with a huge amount of not just commode thingys but gaming delights in general(such as Exolon remake, Jetpac remake, Thrust remake, open arena, flight sims, etc etc etc.)

I wouldn't normally dare to mention something like this but I had a look and it is very highly recommended - if you have good enough hardware you will be surprised how good it is.
Get both discs downloaded for full amounts of fun - they are torrent downloads - on a 50Mbps connection they downloaded at a full 5MB per sec(in fact it actually hit 10MB per sec for most of the download which is weird....I only have 50Mbps connection at home???) so the 6.6GB didn't take that long to get.

    thanks for that.

my views on it and the "new" commodore brand / machines

bastardised pile of s*** trading on a legendary brand ... they should have left WELL alone.. although I have far more time for c64 than amiga (which I found quite boring with the exception of a few choice titles a lot of it was pony)

pretty sure thats some retrospec stuff like wizball ? in there.. you can run it on windows.. no biggy
tux racer etc has been on linux for years.

want all the 8 bit commodore machines, free.. no probs.. http://www.viceteam.org/

Not sure what's flavour of the month linux wise these days.

they did well to not allow comments on the youtube video or they would have had a few choice comments made.. I mean they are using other peoples work and making it look like it's there's.

    Did you install and try??
    If not........

There's a whole lot more than tuxracer or wizball here.

    I didn't mention the machines because....well you've said it.

I just said it's a very polished linux distro - fully loaded out of the box - very nicely tuned both looks and performance wise. Something for linux users to try out.

They say they want to put some fun back into computing.......I think they've made a good go at that - sorry if that's a bad thing......

Oh yeah - I've got a HUGE amount of distros that I've tried - this one is sh*t hot for gamers.(and I have nothing at all to do with it - this isn't a plug for personal reasons)

there is fun in gaming still I think... just they bothered to do a bit of goggling , where others don't. e..g things like humble bundle, free lunch design, the game hippo

errm but I guess you know I hate em linking it to that specific brand :) . it reminds me of they were talking about retro gaming on radio about a month back.. and someone was on about wizball, so I emailed in and pointed em to retrospec.

I'll try it, but well you know yourself if it's just a prettied version of something that's good underneath it, it'll be good regardless . I guess I'm jaded with marketing people and their claims.. I just like specifics and a list of what's actually going on (nuts / bolts) from the people who are involved. if it's good enough to stand out on it's own (without the wannabe brand) then it would / will.

to me the DTV 64 was far more initiative , that unit they sell is just a pc in a box that might as well have been at MFI (remember the fake plastic mouldings of monitors / puters they had at furniture shops :) )

Good point - it's built on the most instantly useable distro......it's done well though.
The 2nd disc is essential - pop it in to the drive and from "system-->commodore extras-->install commodore os extras" it will install lots more than what's on disc1(and yes - they are not commodore extras - they don't even provide the machine roms for the commodore machines )

One other thing to note - this t410 is exactly the same as my other 2 work machines(except it's stuck in a docking station since someone lost the key to get it out...) - I have one with XP and one with 7. This feels lightening fast in comparison to both. I usually use WattOS....I might switch to this(and change the wallpaper and splash screens of course :) )

MFI  "take care not to stress the dowling pins"
I nearly killed myself with an MFI drinks cabinet when I was about 8 - leaned on the pull out "counter" and it toppled over and fell on me(all 6 foot of it) - that was to this day the earliest I ever saw my dad up on a Saturday morning - lifting it back off me :)

Is this a LIVE distro or a normal one?

I already use Debian, and I don't want to set up a virtual machine to test it...
    I was there, too
An' you know what they said?
Well, some of it was true!

OK - let the back pedaling begin.....

    Right.....lesson learned here is:

Don't post stuff when your so ill that the stars in the sky go 3D and amazing looking...........

    I should've known better.......but I didn't.

I've been hot cold hot cold - dizzy/light headed since last Friday. Kind of like flu but without the cold like stuff(no snots or sore throat). But I was literally hallucinating until this afternoon. People in work were looking at me kinda strange and asking if I was OK. I said yes - but I meant no. Thank my lucky(3d) stars that it was all business as usual in work as opposed to something new for the last few days - I could've easily done something stupid and got sacked.......

This distro is nothing you can't just setup/configure yourself from say....Mint
    If you're a commode fan have a look - if you're not don't.

It is live - and it's also not so amazing - but the state I was in(delusional) I thought it was the mutts nuts. I'm in shock to be honest. It's not that special at all and I can only massively apologise.

Embarrassing really but I can admit when I'm wrong. I could also go and edit out most of the previous posts to make myself look a bit less of a fool....but I'm not going to.

I am most certainly sticking to my WattOS, Ubuntu, Mint, Puppy Arcade(which really is good if you can figure it all out).

Basically - I'm a twat when I get pissed too quickly and as it turns out I'm also a twat when I am feverish.
Hope you all understand - I was very very "out of body" for the last few days due to whatever's been up with me.

No excuse but it is what it is.
Lesson learned for me.....pity it was the hard way.

hehehe who cares tbh . I posted stuff well (some may say that's debatable) and that opened a hornets nest.. should have charged for popcorn..

linux I found is , well .. 1 is flavour of the month .. then the next etc..

I just get annoyed they use the C= brand, thats all.

get well soon.. smithwicks is good for a cold, failing that tiffen (can't buy it in the UK.. I'm getting some again real soon :D ) or taytos (again can't get em)

    Cheers guys.
I actually went all red from embarrassment when I started feeling better and realised what had happened(not just the post here but also things I did and said in work - nothing too bad but a bit out there all the same).

And yeah - the 3d stars were amazing really - hard to describe but I could see real depth in the sky as opposed to a flat picture of stars. Some were close - some were further back - some were in between the two(a bit like a 3d movie I suppose).
