Why's it called Mariokart 7? Isn't there only about 4 of them?
(lifted off wiki)
1. Super Mario Kart (1992, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Virtual Console)[2][3]
2. Mario Kart 64 (1996, Nintendo 64, Virtual Console)
3. Mario Kart: Super Circuit (2001, Game Boy Advance)
4. Mario Kart: Double Dash!! (2003, Nintendo GameCube)
5. Mario Kart Arcade GP (2005, Arcade) (Co-developed by Namco)
6. Mario Kart DS (2005, Nintendo DS)
7. Mario Kart Arcade GP2 (2007, Arcade) (Co-developed by Namco)
8. Mario Kart Wii (2008, Wii)
Mario Kart 7 (2011, Nintendo 3DS)
so why is it 7 ? ;)
I guess discount the 2 arcade ones
I have the DS one, playing online was boring because if you raced against people who "snaked" all the time http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnX4l8UoQUc .. well it took all the fun out of the game.

Agree that some people doing that was annoying but regardless I had some fantastic online games. Quick and easy way to play others rather than AI - good fun.
Yep, discount the 2 co produced arcade ones which don't count as not true Nintendo games anyway.

I found this too but the Wii one sorted out this problem and got the player matching just right. Mario Kart Wii online is a better experience than I have ever had on XBox Live, so hopefully they have taken this forward to the 3DS iteration.
I just hope they get rid of those **** blue shells i mean how do you stop them from hitting you. Is it even possible ?
Nope, I'm afraid not.
The trick with Mario Kart is to not be out in front, but close to the front as you get better items then you do when you are in 1st place.
Never understood why this series is so popular. Skill means nothing and winning/losing is decided on the roll of a dice.
If you're talking the n64 or Wii version then I can see your point - the latter was designed as a 'nan can play too' game. still cracking games though.
if you're talking snes, gba or (according to the review) this new one then can't agree. snes in particular was purely driving skill, the computer controlled characters often impossibly avoiding your shells which could be infuriating. only way to beat them was practice and learning the kart.

indeed i got into mario kart on the snes, was awesome, staying up till all hours a group of us playing it, getting better, you definitely needed skill and trying to work out the short cuts and shave milliseconds off yer time lol

Looking back i cant stand the SNES version, the trick was to stay 2nd, the second you get in the lead you'll get a ton of bananas and other stuff thrown at you. Plus you had to do 5 laps which is boring as hell.
Played Mario Kart to death on the GBA version, to me the difficultly level was just right, it wasnt 'luck' and it was a brilliant game. Also enjoyed the N64 version which i played a lot on an emulator.
But roll of a dice/no skill, dont agree with that on the GBA version, played all the leagues, races non stop, loved it.
My son has the Wii version and it's just no fun to play. If you're any good you can expect to be hit with 10 blue shells each race, with no way to defend yourself. At least with red or green shells you can use shells to deflect them.
The other one I played was the DS one where I had 3 red shells and each time I fired one at another rider, less than 10 seconds later he'd zoom past me again.

I'm with Xbomber on this one, the SNES version was pure driving talent... specially if you played 2 players and had the luck to get good computer adversaries (like yoshi).
also it helped that the computer didn't have the same powers as you did (each charecter has a specific power, while your power up's would be delt by luck).
tried the blue shels, they suck... the ending of the feathr jump also put me away from the game... but i've never tried it on the Wii
I didn't either as refused to buy at that price for so few games. once it hit less than 120gbp and mk and the new Resi were imminent then I let the good lady get me one for my bday.

I do not think this is true of Mario Kart but it has certainly been true of some other Kart Racers.

Good reason not to!
