almost as offensive as a certain other Yorkshire man .. who could that be...
(not really)

was funny to watch the reaction on tv.. and people take him seriously, big wind up and loads of free advertising.

they must be using it as a smoke screen to cover up certain comments made by others elsewhere... hhhmmmm

Ricky G and Jimmy Carr getting a week off ?

I'll be honest, I seem to be one of the few people that don't find Ricky Gervais funny.

I mean "The Office" was funny, but Gervais as a stand up comedian just isn't funny. I find he laughs at his own jokes far too much for my liking.

I also can't fathom this furore for Michael McIntyre...he just is not funny.

I'm a big fan of Ricky Gervais, loved his jokes/abuse at the Golden Globes, hes doing it again next year. Lifes too short isnt too bad, basically Warwick Davis acting as David Brent but still good.

I do like Jimmy Carr, does go a bit far sometimes but i do love his stand up. Agree about Michael McIntyre, i did actually watch some of his standup on one of the Sky channels the other day, some bits were very funny but i really really cant stand his voice so that doesnt help !

Oh thank god, I'm not alone

Ricky Gervais, props for the office but the individual stuff is just a tubby smug twat smugging around the stage and utterly not amusing.

Not seen much by McIntyre but so far so nothing

Also...Stewart Lee of Fist of Fun fame, does anyone get him?? (Other than Missus Wookiee that is)

Jimmy Carr is excellent. He does go too far sometimes but I quite like that "I shouldn't really be laughing at this" element...

I suppose for me, the polar opposite of Ricky Gervais would be Frankie Boyle...his stand up is something to behold but let's leave Tramadol Nights well alone.

Just ripped a few dvds last night so i've got them to listen to on a long car journey this week. Got both Frankie Boyles to listen to, find him very funny

I'd heard a rumour, but not checked it, that Frankie Boyle was doing another tour...after he said his last tour would be the final one he ever did.

STeaMette and Me (sorry Wookiee - "STeaMette and I") went to see Frankie at Manchester Apollo on his last tour...don't think I've ever had so many guilty laughs in one evening in my life to be honest!

Yes - I think he's the funniest comedian currently working.

    As for Ricky Gervais....
He's funny, but I get the feeling that if you peel away all the irony, you'd find a mean spirited individual. I hope I'm wrong, some of the writing for extras was amazing. I loved the David Bowie bit. It's weird to think that will be his last original recording if the stories of his retirement are true...

i caught the last minute of 'the one show' last night with the presenter apologizing for clarkeson's earlier comments, he was just sat there shrugging while the crew had a giggle.

    legend, lol

I saw Jimmy Carr at a comedy club before he hit the big time and he was just as offensive then, extremely funny though. He had a persistant heckler and Jimmy just ripped him to pieces to the extent that the heckler eventually walked out (to loud applause from the rest of the audience).
I wanna tell you a story 'bout a woman I know...

...does it not bother you that you never saw the end of his set then? :p

I would never be daft enough to heckle a comedian, I've seen enough to know that the only winner is the one holding the microphone...

I can't stand him either! He's just one of the worlds smug idiots who thinks far too much of himself and from what I've seen of his "stand up", it's not standard stand-up stuff, but just a series of pre-written routenes. Ok, so most comedians are like that, but with him, it's just far more obvious some how. Probably because his stuff isn't really upto much anyway.

That just about sums him up for me

I normally switch off when that comes on, but as soon as I heard he was on last night I decided to watch it. He was on form last night. It was obvious that the only thing he was tehre for (like 99.9% of guests on shows like that) was to plug his new DVD. Once that was out of the way he looked bored stupid and was just having fun and seeing how far he could push it.

What he said that caused the apologies at the end was along the lines of trains being late because someones usually thrown themselves under one and it makes the train stop. So he said why bother holding everyone up? Once your hit by a train it's good night (or words to that effect), so the train may as well keep going

I thought it was funny anyway!

I like Clarkson, he says whats on his mind and doesnt just BS just to please his bosses/viewers.

that doesn't seem that bad, i heard the presenter mention trains, so i thought he might have been going on about some unlucky sod getting run over by one at a level crossing.

i like it when he insults a random south american country. :p

I like him sometimes - but.... his comments that the strikers have gilt edged pensions that are guaranteed whilst some of us have to work for a living is a bit much from someone that gets paid ?1m from our TV taxes
    My test signature

Yep totally agree there, some bloke down the road might say that comment but from someone whos being paid a ton of money its a bit rich coming from him

But i admit i still like the bloke, always says controversial stuff and doesnt seem to care

He actually makes most of his money from sales of the Top Gear brand (which he, at least pattly, owns). I read an interview with James May a while ago where he answered the question that the 3 of them were paid too much money and he said that when a BBC report was published with it's 20 top earning stars, none of them were on it (which he was quite relieved about). I'm not defending Jezza's comments on that though as I support the strikers, but he doesn't earn as much (directly) from the BBC as people may actually think.
  • edited December 2011
He's probably not employed directly by the BBC.

The company that runs TG probably employs him ( which he owns part off ) and the charges the BBC for the program.

Got to aggree on Ricky Gervaise - not a funny stand up at all. Writes a good sitcom though and his podcasts were pretty funny.

Chat show host Piers Morgan tweeted: "Clarkson can abuse - and hit (weakly..) - me all he likes. But what he said about the strikers just proves he's a nasty little twerp."

    Oh, the irony.

He's made similar comments about motorcyclists, and hoping that they die. May and Hammond both ride motorbikes regularly, yet bikes rarely feature, so I don't much like Top Gear anyhow, and without Top Gear Clarkson is just another ranter for hire hack journo.

Though, a twerp is a twerp, and I don't tend to get that annoyed by people saying stupid things.

It is clear in this clip, that he doesn't mean it. Doesn't actually want a mass murder to take place within a police state, of course. It's not racist, or sexist, or religious hatred. It's just stupid.

Some humble pie ought to be enough.

he once said to hammond, i will stand by the track chain smoking, while you ride around on your black boosa (sic) and we'll see who dies first. :-P

not sure though, but don't think 5th gear feature bikes either. i guess all bikers can take care of themselves in regards to what they buy ie they aint dafties

and to be fair to clarky, he did ride the length on vietnam on a scooter for a top gear special. ;)
  • edited December 2011
5th gear does occasionally, and just does it, without any fuss, like comparing lap times between the BMW RR and a sports car.

Saw him the other day at the Norwich Playhouse, in fairness it was a cheap gig as he was "testing out new material" but I think it's fair to say he's got a lot of work still to do if he wants any of it to be funny. Thankfully the guy doing the warm up (Paul Tomkinson or something like that, seen him on TV once or twice) was substantially better.

He fell off it, too. Priceless!

AND ALSO, in context, his comment was less offensive, from what I've heard on Radio 4 just now.

He said something like, "this is the BBC, we must do balance...." then outrageous statement.

It was a political story he was commenting on, so it becomes satire. Stupid maybe, but not that big a deal IMO.

apparantley he said something about suicide too, I missed that part of the news though.

Sounds to me more of a "watershed" handwringing, think of the children faux pas than anything else.
