internet radios?

edited December 2011 in Chit chat
are there any radios, that are stand alone, that connect to the modems wirelessly and work?

rather than having to connect them via a computer, or stream from computers?

i.e have I understood the description correctly, does this do what I said? or does it have to connect to the computer?

Yeah, this does exactly what you describe. A friend of mine has one and regards it as one of the best things he's ever bought himself. I've been meaning to buy myself one for some time.

For less than ?150 Argos sell the Apple iPod Touch 4G which connects to your Wifi and with free Apps gives you access to thousands of stations (including BBC) around the world.

You can get a speaker docking station to boost the sound off eBay.

It can also be used as a video camera, stills camera, time lapse cam, dash cam, Juke Box, Skype phone, Facetime device, portable TV, kindle, iBook reader, magnifying glass, Spectrum Emulator, Web browser, Forum reader and thousands of other gadgets.

Best thing I bought since the Spectrum with no monthly charge.

You know ... I don't think I've ever seen an internet radio over here in the States ... I don't think I've even ever heard of them here.

Maybe the other US-based WoSsers can prove me wrong here...

I have a micro hi-fi which has internet stations. You can also go to a website and sync the latest list or submit suggestions.

This is mine. Stereo of course.

Any radio station. CB, Police Scanner (Chicago is hottest) plus, of course every TV station that Freeview has and a few more. The remote works the volume only but works fully with tranferred CD albums and iTune downloads.

No need for the docking station. I only use it when listening with friends.

Also plays ZX Dingo for free legally.

I bought the wife one, seemed a bit expensive just so she could listen to a London station 75 miles away but it kept her quite for a while. There are thousands of stations to flick through and you soon realise why there are so many - they are all mostly **** with no listeners.

that would really annoy me, they are different colours, they'd both need to be the same colour!

Yes they do four colours but not white. However the wife has a black iPhone so this doubles as an early Christmas present :-)
Using a ZX Spectrum does teach you logic.

There is a wide choice of such devices.

so does an ipod 4 surf the net too?

and, changing the subject slightly, does anyone know are there any phones that I can buy, that I can surf the net wirelessly from a router, and not via the phones network?

Yes the iPod 4 touch surfs the net. It comes with the Safari browser and Wikipedia etc pre-installed but there are thousands of Web applications.
The only thing missing (a bit) is the compass and the GPS and front camera light. There are Apps for reading vBulletin forums like WOS but Martijn would have to enable his site to get the most out of them.

Most Apple and Android phones have Wifi. Also the expensive Symbian Nokia 5800 mentioned in the other thread. One of the cheapest is the two-camera t-mobile Vivacity mentioned in the other thread at ?99. Launched 2 days ago. I get mine tonight. Cheekily it uses your Wifi allowance (which you pay your ISP for) to boost its 3G quality. However you can surf using only your Wifi (as per iPhone) and if you also use Skype, Tango etc. you can call other phones without incurring any charges.

    It's a game changer.

Once you've paid upfront, neither the iPod 4 nor the Vivacity involve a monthly charge.
The iPod 4 has Facetime and 5GB cloud storage free for life. *
The Vivacity (etc) comes with ?10 PAYG and that will probably last me a year.

    * Type the url icloud.com into your browser and click on Help at the bottom to see what a bonus this is.
