  He was the captain of my favourite football team ever, the 1982 Brazil side, arguably the best team ever not to win the World Cup. He was IMO the most elegant six foot-plus player of all time. A great passer of the ball, a good taker of free kicks when he had the chance (with Zico and Eder in the side he didn't get one) and unbeatable in the air, his only weakness- if he had one- was in his defensive play. Also as Pele put it, Socrates was better at playing the ball backwards than most people were playing it forward: a master of the backheel.
  
  Brazil 1982 may not have been the best team ever to come out of Brazil, and they certainly weren't the most successful, but they were the most Brazilian. Their free flowing footballing jazz in the cynical defensive early 80s was something that won't be forgotten, a style perfectly summarised by the occasionally eccentric genius of their figurehead captain, Dr Socrates. RIP.

  A worthy adversary in 1982, and a great example of fair play and social commitment... He will be missed.

  He wasn't too bad on the ball either, going by the Monty Python philosopher's football match.

  He wasn't for sure one of the greatest players of all time, but the "politically incorrect" messages he used to wear (in the headbands iirc), the ability to put the ball in the exact point of the field he desired and above all his way of shooting the penalties with the heels caught my mind as a kid.
  
  He's still one of the first players I buy when I play a "master league" in PES.
