im gonna say what everyones thinking, whilst hiding behind a fake ident.
If you don't have the balls to come out and say it under your usual nick, why bother at all?
As it goes, I've often been cynical about this and similar attempts to redo a classic game from scratch. There is so much involved in trying to get a project like this to completion as it is, but when you couple that with everyones expectations (including often the coder themselves, who really do want it to be perfect) and the limited amount of time anyone can dedicate to something, the end result is often difficult to achieve. And I say that knowing similar projects of my own came close to completion, but never quite got finished due to a myriad of little details and an increasing sense of apathy about finishing something that seems to suck all your free time.
I hope I'm wrong and fikee turns up with a playable end product (even if not perfect) but I also hope that if he has just got fed up with it he knows it's cool to just come back to WoS and say he's shelved it indefinitely and just enjoy the rest of WoS.
My own view is i tip my hate to everyone who is in on this game and that means even if it never gets put out there i still tip my hat. The amount of work you have all done is mind blowing.
Lol then you sir are a bell-end too. match my i.p address, dont make me laugh.
it doesnt take 1 braincell to disguise an i.p. of course as your obviously devoid of any intelligent thought process then you dont realise that.
im gonna say what everyones thinking, whilst hiding behind a fake ident.
fikee hasnt been back on these boards cos its all hot air. he is incapable of producing the goods and knows that, however good his intentions were.
find a proper coder to do the job.
good luck with the project
you are absolutely right, i would never ever do the same fault and lift up the project.
and yes, im quite ashamed by do not fullfiling my promises. fact is im a bit tired by DDR and all expectations about it.
honestly, if there would be a coder humble enough to lift the project and keep the spirit and ambitions of DD redux i would pass it in a minute, giving him elaborate description af all blind routes i checked in last two years.
[DANGER! A PROMISE...]
anyway, to clarify what is going on: i really would like to deliver a tech demo in december or january. if that happen the most of byte juggling around in too small memory should be hidden and hopefully i can move to something less frustrating : say packing 250KB of raw data in less 96KB.

:( Its a shame that Fikee is tired of DD Redux but understandable as its a massive project and he's the only coder. We need another person to code on the team, its too much for one person. Problem is, Fikee would like to pass on the coding if someone else is available to join the project and we'll be back to one person again.
How many seasoned coder's are active on WOS? I suppose for a project like this we would need someone who has free time and experience with difficult projects such as Jim Bagley who pulled a minor miracle out of the bag with Midnight Resistance and Cabal.
I don't think its fair to lay it on one person to complete the coding and sounds like the project cannot be completed given the current situation.

It's not that easy to share code anyway - coding is an art form, and everybody has their own particular methods and tricks. It might work if the work was split between distinct areas though - such as frontend and game.

Now there's an idea...
Yes it does sound difficult but I'm sure coding alone is worse on a large project like this. Someone will have to help either way as Fikee has clearly said that he shouldn't have taken it on alone and now is tired of the expectations set on him. He wants to leave the project to someone else so it is definite that it will not be getting completed anytime soon unless someone else steps in to complete it. Its really sad but the fact is that the project is literally on hold until another person or people can relieve the burden from Fikee.
Its hard to say how much has been completed as there hasn't been any solid material presented on the forum for months and the increasing difficulty to contact Fikee was probably an obvious sign that it wasn't going to be completed. Good on him for trying though but I'm sure he had the best intentions and never for one minute wanted to let anyone down.
So it looks like its now on ice again although anything extra completed by Fikee would be a bonus for Swainy. Is it possible to show us the rest of the level designs just to stop interest from waning? All the graphics were completed first to the best of my knowledge. The first level looks great!

Hold on - let's not lose sight of what Fikee actually said here, because I think we're getting a case of Chinese whispers. Just because he's indicated he'd be willing to hand over the project if the opportunity arose, doesn't mean it's on hold. Quite the opposite - he says he's hoping to release a tech demo in the next few months, and is looking ahead to what the next steps are after that. Whether he attains that goal is something that we'll have to wait and see, but don't write him out of the picture just yet...

Yeah guys, Gasman is spot on here. Fikee wants to get a demo released some point over the next few months and then we can see what happens from there.

Fikee said that he has lost interest in the project and shouldn't have taken it on by himself in the first place, yeah he did say that he would carry on but would like to pass it on to another coder so I don't think much will get completed now. I will check next December to see.

I wish I could volunteer! :) My understanding of coding goes as far as BASIC! :) Its so frustrating as I have so many ideas which I want to implement into a game and I just don't have the technical knowledge to do so. I'm quite creative and arty but crap at maths so I'm screwed having an unhealthy interest in retro gaming/game design/programming and not being able to do anything about it. If I did then this would be the game I would be working on, I've been following this since 2002/2003 and my interest in it just keeps on growing.
As I said though, even though I would love this to be finished I just don't think a great deal will be completed now that Fikee has expressed his concerns about the project regarding high expectations, lack of man power, project size and available time. If your heart isn't in it then you're not going to invest many difficult hours into it in your spare time and I don't blame him at all. It sounds very difficult indeed! :( Thats not to say that I want him to give in and leave, I always check the forum hoping to see some exciting new work revealed but I think I'm being a little unrealistic and should stop obsessively checking as WOS takes up a lot of my time :P
I'm going to try and lay off WOS for a few months and concentrate on more of my IT exams and certifications. I need to get my Oracle Solaris 11 certs and all this retro goodness just puts if off all the time :P I just barely clawed my life back from World of Warcraft after 4 years and made it out without losing all my friends.
I'm hoping to take a peek mid next year and see something very exciting.
Best of luck to the DD 128k Redux team and I hope you all have a great Christmas.
PS - Swainy you should so do 'Berzerk' for the Spec! :)
Well, it's funny that you mention that. I've decided to make Berzerk my first written Spectrum game. Now, before you start high-fiving yourself, I should add that it's also the game I'm going to be cutting my teeth learning on, too. Don't expect it any time soon.

Well if you do need any help mate, then please let me know.
hmm, I don't think fikee will give up so easily, as I understand he already coded many aspects of the game.
I'll wait for Fikee's next move...
Nope he won't give up, it will nag at him in his dreams until he's got it completed. Its nearly been ten years if I remember correctly? Around 2002?
Time doesn't matter at this point.
In the mean time I'd love to see some of his excellent graphics work for some Spectrum mockup screens for games like Alien 3, Zool and Alfred Chicken :)
I'd love to see a version of Alien 3 on the Spec some time in the future.

It's not nice to use a fake identity.
Be a MAN and reveal yourself !
Lol then you sir are a .... (juvenile name calling rubbish)
Why would you call Daren a code"master" ... he can barely fumble his way through a "Hullo werld!" in BASIC !!!

If you ask me, then where I'm standing and compared to me, the answer is 512.
(seeing as there are 513 active members on WoS)
