well the little guy is dead

If it produced something of a display and you could see that some of the keys functioned, then there probably isn't anything too seriously wrong with it and it almost certainly can be repaired. It could be rather time consuming though (see the thread about the Issue 2 Spectrum I've been working on - it is working now, though I'm still trying to work out why one particular problem happened.)

someone's used a metal screwdriver on it...
Besides most people seem to bypass the modulator and use composite video anyway :)

you will have to find somewhere to put the photograph online, and then post the url here in img tags.

    e.g.
    [noparse]image.jpg[/noparse]

this is the repair that was done before i got my grubby paws on it

as u can see who ever did this repair left that end one to long so when the lid was put down it connected its self to the 2 next to it and gave it a nice black mark on the back

Store the picture somewhere online, get the URL to its location, then create a post here with this:

    [noparse]URL-to-the-picture[/noparse]

    Here is an example:
The URL to the picture in the top left of this page (black square that says "FORUMS World of Spectrum") is [noparse]http://www.worldofspectrum.org/forums/images/custom/forums.gif[/noparse] so I just copy that URL and plop it between the IMG tags, like so [noparse]forums.gif[/noparse]

And when I submit my post it comes out like a regular picture:
    forums.gif

( PS "But how are you able to use the IMG tags in this example without it being interpreted as an IMG tag???" I hear you cry ... well, I am able to use the [noparse][img][/img][/noparse] tags without the forum software parsing it by putting [noparse][noparse][/noparse][/noparse] before and after the IMG tags for demonstration purposes (and so can you))

EDIT: HAHA, you beat me to it by a minute ... good job! And I see guesser helped out too.

Is that R55? it should be a 56 ohm resistor as far as I can tell...

If so it looks like the -5v supply has probably been shorted out and if so that will have caused a cascade of problems for you :(

I would be possibly expecting to see TR4 being overloaded and almost certainly ram being damaged if the -5v supply disappeared :(

it ether says R55 or R85 as it has a pain line going through the middle it turns on but the screen is like its out of tune so im going to try that mod but cant seem to get my head round it the long chip on the board has been lifted out and put back wrong so the pins were bent thats been sorted no damage there

so your opinion is it a scraper or something that can be saved

If the ULA works then the spectrum can be saved basically. Whether it's economical to do so is another matter but it doesn't look to me like your board is damaged at least not in the bits you photographed. All the components can be replaced except the ULA

What issue is the board? The photo doesn't quite match either of the two I've got open on my workbench.

It probably can be repaired, but it sounds as if there has been quite a lot of damage. Don't scrap it, in the worst case it can provide spare parts to help repair another.

im looking at this mod if it works and i get a clear picture i will have a better clue how badly cooked it is but far as i can see its just disconect evreything and put a single wire in its palce is it that simple

    http://womblesretrorepairshack.blogspot.com/2008/11/zx-spectrum-composite-video-mod.html

another thing is only half of the keys work dont know if thats down tot he board or the ribbon cables
  • edited December 2011
did the mod and the screen is stable but i end up with this on the screen now

This was already answered back here icon14.gif

And here is the answer you're looking for: [noparse]http://www.rwapsoftware.co.uk/[/noparse]

How are you able to tell that some of the keys work? It looks as if that Spectrum doesn't work well enough for you to be able to tell.

The ULA is generating a video signal, so that component at least isn't completely dead. I'd say there's a decent chance it can be fully repaired.

Did you even read comments no 20 or 5 ???
  • edited December 2011
yeah read those but those probs are done i now have it on im just wondering why the graphic output is like this now before it was white with letters on it but the screen was to fuzzy to see now its clear i got the black
  • edited December 2011
If it was making a clicking noise when you pressed a key, then at least all the major components were functioning. I assume this does not happen now. What did you do/happened to it to damage it further?

If I were repairing it, I'd start by checking whether the power supply circuitry is working and whether the various voltages it produces are present where they should be. If not, it's likely some or all of the lower RAM chips have failed, which can produce a display like the one you posted, though so can other faults too.

connected the keyboard cut back the ribbon cable and when i powers it on i heard a click from the speaker from some buttons but not others but now i have done the mod the pic is perfect but just jibberish was just trying to find out if this is a fault somewhere elce or one related to the origonal one like the video fault someone gave me a link i used 2 blobs of solder fixed there could have been a similar fix to this well i was hoping
  • edited December 2011
i have done nothing but the previous mod if you are saying it could be ram puts me back to the original fault with the blown capacitors
  • edited December 2011
I think it needs to be examined by someone more familiar with working on electronic circuits.
  • edited December 2011
You hadn't said anything about failed capacitors before. Did you replace them (and possibly try to determine why they had failed)? I wouldn't have even switched it on if not as it could possibly cause further damage.
  • edited December 2011
i have loads of information on this now i have narrowed the problem down to a few things and i now need to do a little pricing up and decide if this is for the spairs bin or worth repairing

Thanks for all your paitance and help
