Watching friends playing games

edited December 2011 in Games
Back in the Speccy days, did you had friends or relatives that always assumed you wanted to watch them play a certain game and always decided things for you, or were you that person?

In my case I was too polite and I would just sit there for hours and "enjoy" it. I guess I didn't want to make them sad or something. Some of them would tell me things like "Hey, good thing you're here! Look, you have to see this game I've been playing!" or "I'm going to show you what I've been working on". Sometimes it was something great and lots of fun, but sometimes it was one of those situations where you think "How do I get out of here?".

  • Not game related but when I first started going out with my girlfriend we went round her friends house. She found a load of tapes of them singing drunkenly from a few years back. They thought it was hilarious, I was bored and desperately trying to think of an excuse to get out of there!

I think the conversation would have gone something like this...

Them "This game is great, watch this!"
    Me "OK sure"
    ...couple of minutes later....
Me "So are we going down the pub or not?"
Them "...and you have to jump on this ledge here [not listening]"
    Me "OK, see you later"
    ....sound of door closing.

I had a mate that had a CPC and he would sit for hours playing games and wouldn't even offer me a shot. After he'd finish he'd switch it off and say 'Let's go outside' and i'd ask him to load a game in, he would say it's too much hassle and leave. The friendship fell apart a while later, probably because he beat me up!

I hated watching my friends play games it ruined a fair few classics for me.

I didn't have money to buy current machines until about 10 years ago so I watched my mates play through a load of games that I would've liked to have played through myself at the time.

As for Speccy games nah I played what I wanted when I wanted, I guess I was nice when my pals were around I'd load up something we could all enjoy, and if it was something we couldn't multiplay we did the age old rule of life by life/level by level.
    Every night is curry night!

I used to play scaletrix on speccy with a friend.. until we found the trick.. drive infront.. slam on the brakes.. player behind loses.

    I used to like 2 player+ games.

I used to have a girlfriend who was a gamer (coming up to 10 years ago) .. was great.. all my friends were annoyed as their girlfriends would cuss them about it.

one of the many reasons, she was the only woman I would have married to date. The worst of it, it will always be unfinished business.. ah well :)

I went round to my friend's house where he introduced me to a brilliant new game on the Amiga called "Civilization". I watched 10 minutes or so of intro before being allowed a shot of the game...or so I thought. I actually sat and watched him move squares about. Slowly. Occasionally he would ask if I'd like to decide where to move a square, so I'd point and say "there", only to be told that wasn't such a good place to move it to and he'd decide for me. Understandably, I didn't feel like playing Civilization myself, until about 5 years later...

I used to spend hours around my mates house, load up a game and take turns to get the best score in a 2 player game

other times I could quite happily sit there and watch him play a single player game, I'd be doing a bit of back seat gaming

    good times, goooooood times

More in the pre-Spectrum days when we had a Commodore 16, but also when we owned a Spectrum, my immediately older sister convinced me I enjoyed watching her play the games more than I enjoyed playing them myself.

Now I remember playing Commando with a mate, one moving the character, the other just pressing fire. That's an easier way to play it!

I think there's a more general problem with some people in that they think you're interested in whatever they are interested in, and worst of all, don't seem to realise you're not, even when you try and give off signals. The worst is when someone is telling a long and tedious anecdote, and you know you can't get away until the end (without being rude) but you know it's a long way off yet...

I've never really been a game player, as I was far more interested in what each game release had to offer. I used to spend ages round my mates house messing about with his C64 - he did most playing, though we did play Racing D/Construction Set, uridium, paradroid and spy vs spy together....

I do actually like watching people play games..... Or do I just like watching games being played.....
